The festival, which has been practiced by Phuket locals for over a hundred years, has been gaining international interest from around the world. Part of the greatness is being able to participate in the spiritual event which takes place only once a year.

The very first practice began with the Kathu locals during the tin mining era. Back then, the area was a dense, malaria-infested jungle filled with all kinds of danger, but still more and more people were drawn in by the lucrative tin mine. The early Chinese settlers believed strongly in worshipping the gods and deceased ancestors who protect their families and villages from harm.

Every morning, each shrine would hold the street procession or the “Giew Eng” ceremony and travel along the roads to meet people. At the front would be the flags and name sign followed by carriages containing statues of the gods in order of significance. The largest of the carriages would hold The Nine Emperor gods or “ Kui Ong Tai Tei”

Faithful residents would set up a table with offerings in front of their homes and ask the gods for protection. They would also light up fire crackers so the gods would hear their prayers.

The Fire-walking is a sacred ritual which illustrates the supernatural power to control fire from burning the skin. Phuketians also call it the cleansing fire that purifies the body.

The Fire-walking ritual is demonstrated by “Mah Songs” or Middleman , but passers bys can also try if they have faith and are brave enough. The ritual is very thrilling and as always, the Mah Songs are able to walk through gracefully.

For this, participants need to bring a self-cut paper doll to represent themselves, a 25 satang coin and a Chinese chive plant to the shrine. The Mah Song would use them for the cleansing ritual and then stamp a sign (Tah In) at the back of the participant’s shirt.

At the mention of Sea Mist, most of us would probably think of the fluffy white clouds of the Northern provinces. But today, we will take our readers to admire the southern sea mist that can be experienced right here in Phang-Nga Province.

Before we came, we had checked the weather forecast with the Sub-district Administrative Organization of ThungMaprao to ensuregood weather. We also found a local 4WD truck for hire, a service which many villagers took up to gain extra income.

แตกอนเขาลกนไมมชอ เปนพนทสวนยางของ บงไข หรอ “ศกด แคลวคลอง” กบบงนย หรอ “นย นงราว” แลวไดมนกศกษาจากลาดกระบงมาทำากจกรรม บงทงคไดพาขนมาชมทะเลหมอก พวกนกศกษาประทบใจจงตงชอเขาลกนวา “เขาไขนย” ตามชอเลนของบงไขและบงนย

A few years ago, this hill didn’t really have a name as it was just a rubber plantation that belonged to “Bang Kai” (SakKlongklaew) and “Bang Nui” (Nui Ningravee). But after a group of stu-dents from Lad Krabang College came to visit, they were brought up here to view the sea mist. The students were so impressed with this place that they decided to name it “Khao Kai Nui” after its owners, Bang Kai and Bang Nui.

From there, it took about 30 minutes to reach the top of the hill. And since Khao Kai Nui was a relatively new tourist attraction, the path was not yet paved and was lined with lush flora and fauna that grew wild.

After parking, we trekked uphill for a bit and came upon the sign, Khao Kai Nui, which indicated that we have come to the right place.

Right behind the sign was the amazing blanket of white mist that covered the entire hill and spread its wings onto the trees below. And whenever cool breeze blew past, the whole atmosphere reminded us of being among the hills of the north.

Once the first rays of sun began to shine, the mists slowly dispersed. The golden light that shone across the thick, green forest brought warmth and slowly, we could see the heavenly views of the Andaman unfolding before our eyes.

Kata is a medium sized beach located between Kata Noi and Karon Beaches and is located about 17 kilometers from the city center.

The first thing that catches your eye is the row of pine trees that line the street. Despite its slightly narrow width, the beach road is a fine place to enjoy a stroll as it is very clean and well-kept.

We had heard that the sand on this beach is soft and powdery to the touch so we went down to inspect whether this was true. Sure enough, the soft white powder beneath our feet was so fine that it made squishy sounds as we walked.

Some friends who joined our trip today are lovers of water sports so they were out there surfing the waves for hours. Kata Beach is also adored by those who come to sun-bathe, enjoy a swim or just splash about in the inviting water.

We also love the fact that they had set up a group to produce baked goods which include bread with various fillings like taro and red beans, Taosor, curry puffs, buttered bread and others. The baked goods are pro-duced under the license of the Food and Drugs Administration and Halal standard so every piece is delicious and brimming with quality. Naturally, we ate till we became full.

The group of women producing these traditional sweets consists of aunties and grandmas who don’t have much to do at home and wanted to spend time doing something constructive. Today, we got the chance to try sweetened glutinous rice that was so aromatic and delicious.

There is also the group of home-sewn dress makers who produces mainly kindergarten school uniforms. Next we visited the Muslim spa which utilizes herbal compresses and ancient traditional massage method. They also have a special technique which is very popular with postnatal mothers.

Our first stop was at the Big Buddha, Phra Buddha Kodhom, to make merit and went on to Khao Poh Temple to pay respect to Luang Por Daeng’s amazing unrotting corpse. Actually, there are many more outstanding Buddhist attractions on this island like the Prathat Hin Ngu, Laemsor Chedi and the three-layered Buddha footprint at Prah Buddhabhat Temple.

During the festival, Phuket’s residents would be engrossed in merit-making by wearing all white, praying at shrines and refrain from eating meat. The latter is eas-ily done as vegetarian food can be found throughout Phuket during this time; and today, we will introduce our readers to Dogbua (Lotus) Restaurant which offers mouth-watering, gourmet vegetarian food. The restau-rant is located in Samgong area with noticeably lots of trees in front. Inside, we noticed the lovely white interior which goes with the name rather perfectly.

Today’s journey takes us to a little vendor called Bangniew’s Otao located opposite from ‘Seng Teng Bew Guan-Im Ta Sue’ Shrine. Amazingly, they have been sell-ing Otao from a small push cart for over 30 years. And if you were to ask a local to name the yummiest Otao in Phuket, everyone would tell you that theirs is the best.

Otao is similar to ‘Hoi Tod’ (fried mussels in crispy flour batter) but also different in some ways. The batter mixture consists of wheat flour and tapioca flour (to give it a gooey texture) and small oysters, steamed taro, eggs and seasoned with soy sauce, pepper and sugar. Everything is stir-fried together, served on a plate then sprinkled with crispy pork rashers.
