What is Photosynthesis?

• Process by which green plants convert the energy from sunlight or light into chemical energy (glucose).

• Obtains the energy from white light.

Autotrophs vs. Heterotrophs

• Autotrophs---producers, makes their own food

• Heterotrophs---consumers, must obtain or eat food

Thylakoids

• This is where the first phase of Photosynthesis takes place.

• Which is also know as the light reaction.

• Involves the trapping of light energy and the formation of materials.

• Produces Oxygen by breaking down H2O into free Electrons, H+ and O

• H+ go to stroma, releasing energy for ATP Production.

Stroma

• This is where the second phase, the Calvin Cycle, of Photosynthesis takes place.

• Which is also known as the dark reaction.

• Produces glucose from H+ and CO2.

• Uses the products from the light reactions to form glucose.
