LIGHT INTERACTION IN TISSUES
Results of MEDISCAN Research Project funded by regional government in Spain.
Main objective: to investigate the application of new photonic technologies and evaluate their capacity to detect the presence of cancer cells in human tissues.

HYPERSPECTRAL VISION
Hyperspectral imaging is a technique that obtains the spectral fingerprint of each point of the sample by optical methods able to decompose the light captured in each of its wavelengths, having also the information of the spatial distribution.

MELANOMA EARLY DETECTION SYSTEM BASED ON HYPERSPECTRAL VISION
• 160,000 cases of melanoma diagnosed each year around the world.
• Melanoma: the most deadly malignant tumor of the skin cancers.
• More than 60% of the deaths by this type of tumors in some regions.
• It is spread by the lymphatic system and blood.
• It is vital to detect melanoma and its complications early through frequent skin scans.

A rapid and non-invasive early melanoma detection system has been developed based on the analysis of the interaction of infrared light with the skin through hyperspectral vision.
Real tests have been performed with patients using the infrared spectrum to find the characteristic spectral fingerprint of tissues that may be affected by a melanoma lesion.
In the clinical study, 100% detection was achieved without false positives. In addition, by processing the image, it has been possible to define the area affected by the lesion, which is very useful for possible surgical interventions

Application
These results can be applied in Dermatology in medical consultations, centres of specialtiesand hospitals.
A prototype has been built in laboratory environment and it has been successfully testedwith patients.

AUTOMATIC DIAGNOSIS IN COLONOSCOPY
• Colorectal cancer is originated from an adenomatous polyp in the colon.
• Diagnosis is based in colonoscopy, with a biopsy and a subsequent anatomical-pathological analysis of the tissue.
• Treatment is usually surgical, and in many cases it is followed by chemotherapy.
• It is the 3rd most common cancer and 2nd most important cause of mortality associated with cancer in America.
• Colorectal cancer causes 694,000 deaths worldwide each year.

We have developed a new technic able to measure the optical properties of live tissues and discriminate between diseased and healthy cells from internal human organs difficult to be explored and diagnosed with current instruments such as optical endoscopy with conventional machine vision.
The innovative method combines a flexible endoscope with a snapshot hyperspectral camera to capture the spectral fingerprint of an area of interest, identifying the type of tissue with a real-time analysis software, able to create a chemical image of that area, to help doctors discriminate internal tissues affected by diseases from healthy ones.

Main advantages of the developed solution:
▪ Better diagnosis of colon cancer providing doctors a tool able to identify precisely which cells are affected by cancer and which are healthy to reduce the rate of false positives and false negatives in cancer diagnosis.
▪ Reduction of waiting lists: with a better diagnosis, the need for repeated or additional tests will be reduced, decreasing consequently the waiting lists in health systems.
▪ Earlier detection of cancer: the earlier the more effectively the treatment work.
▪ Increase in life expectancy.

OUR INTERESTS
Finally, the reason we are here is to show and share with you the potential of photonic technology in Health, but also because we are interested in:
• Contact with partners to collaborate in the field of rapid diagnosis with optical techniques
• To meet medical equipment manufacturers interested in the commercialization of our results and with commercial distribution capacity in the European hospital network.
• Show you our interest, as a partner, in participating in European projects inside or outside the H2020 program.
