OCTOBER: RESPECT LIFE MONTH 2015
It is hard to believe, but the month of October is nearly here, once again, with all the beauty of the Fall colors.
October is a significant month in our church’s calendar in the USA, for it has been designated as “respect life”
month for a number of years now. It is a time for us to reflect on life: its value, its meaning and also its
defense. In particular, we, as Catholic Christians, are asked to reflect on our faith and our belief about the gift
of life. This touches on many areas such as euthanasia, medical research practices and
experimentation, abortion, the death penalty, protecting religious freedom, care for
those whose quality of life is poor or threatened, those whose lives are vulnerable for
so many reasons etc. etc. In fact, Pope Saint John Paul II prophetically spoke many
times about the need to promote a “culture of life” in the face of a growing “culture of
death.”
We can also recall all the many times that Pope Francis spoke about the beauty and
dignity of life (human life and what we might call life in creation) during his recent
visit to the USA. His words, as well as his actions, touched the hearts of many and
showed us an alternative way of living and acting towards others as well as how we see
and use our shared and fragile world and its resources.
Putting things briefly, a culture of life celebrates human life and promotes a respect for
life from the moment of conception to the moment of death. It reminds us of the value
and dignity of every human life, for we have been created in the “image and likeness of
God” (Genesis 2: 7). In this sense, it also confronts certain values, attitudes or
practices such as abortion, some types of medical research, genocide, the treating of
people as objects to be used or exploited, and euthanasia. All this is very close to
home. We can think, for example, of the recent release of those “horrendous
videos” (to quote Bishop Scharfenberger) from Planned Parenthood, or the upcoming
discussion about what is termed “assisted suicide” and the strong attempts to add some
provisions for this to the statute book.
At all times, but especially in this month of October, we are asked to promote a culture of life: to be active and
pro-active in this great calling. In fact, our new Bishop, Bishop Scharfenberger, has asked that we make an
extra effort this year to promote this culture of life. We can do this through prayer, of course, but also through
lobbying those who make laws. It is worth noting that the recent draft bill in the United Kingdom to allow for
so-called “assisted suicide” was defeated substantially by a free vote in the House of Parliament, not least
because of the great number of people (not just Catholics) who wrote to their parliamentary representatives
against the draft measure. We can also make sure that our own attitudes, values and choices are pro-life. Our
Lord tells us that He “came that all might have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10: 10). This “life” is
the life to come, but that life also begins here and now. Let us pray and work for a full respect for and defense
of life; or, as Saint John Paul II put it: to “respect, protect, love and serve life, every human life.”
To learn more about October as Respect Life Month, do visit the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
(USCCB) website, where there is a great deal of helpful information available. The theme for this year is a
simple but vital one: “every life is worth living”. As usual, there are many extra events taking place locally,
as well as at those organized by the Diocese to mark this important month. Check the parish bulletin, the
parish website and the Diocesan website (www.rcda.org) for more details…

know the basics of the Bible? Would you like to refresh the basics so you
can share your faith with others? Then this is the class for you!
Special Safe Environment Training Course
Next Two Sundays
On 10/18 and 10/25 from 10am
to 12pm, we are offering the VIRTUS training course. We’re
offering these sessions especially for our Sunday Morning Faith
Formation families to meet our goal of having all of our parents registered as parish volunteers but anyone who needs to take
the course is welcome.
If you can RSVP for one session or
the other, please let us know at faithformationAA@stambroselatham.com
Hello friends!
Hopefully you’ve had a chance to check out some of the many ways we try to enrich the faith of our community outside of Sunday Mass.
We have many special “audiences” that we work with within our various ministries that cater to people of certain ages or life situations.
We also hope to do many things for the whole community, especially those who want to grow in understanding their faith at an adult level.
For people who want a good introduction to the Bible, check out our 4-session program beginning
on October 21st (see above). We’re also planning to both an Advent speaker series and an Advent weekly retreat (more info to come!).
Also, we post video of our sessions on our parish website (www.stambroselatham.com/media).
There are so many ways to grow: both from here and at home. We hope you take advantage of them!
In Christ,
Tom Acemoglu Pastoral Associate for Evangelization & Catechesis

29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
ALL SOULS AND
THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER
During the month of November, we traditionally
pray for our family and friends who have died.
We have some special “All Souls” memorial
envelopes available. There will be two Masses
offered (6:30am & 7:00pm) for all those
named on 2nd November (All Soul’s Day) and
each day during the month of November. Please
use the space on the back of the envelope to write
down the names of those you wish to be
remembered and then place the envelopes with
any offering you wish to make in the collection
basket as it comes around at the weekend Masses,
or leave the envelopes at the Parish Office or in
the Sacristy. Please make sure that the envelopes
are returned as soon as possible so that the names
can be included in the Mass intentions. The
envelopes will be placed at the altar during the
month of November and those named on the back
of the envelope are prayed for during Mass.
There will also be a Book of Remembrance for
you to write down the names of loved ones who
have died.
On Sunday, 1st November during the 11.30 am
Mass, we will have a special remembrance
ceremony for all our recently deceased parish
members who have had a Funeral Mass or liturgy
at St. Ambrose during the last year (the annual
“Healing of Memories Mass”). The ceremony
will involve some special prayers, the reading of
the names of the deceased parish members and
the presentation of flower. After the Mass there
will be a reception in the McCormick Parish
Center. The families concerned should have
received an invitation to this event, but if you
have not please do contact the Parish Office as
soon as possible. Also, if you have had a family
member (from St. Ambrose or any place) who has
passed away in the last year but whose funeral
took place elsewhere, you are warmly invited to
participate in the ceremony too. Again, please
contact the Parish Office giving your name, the
name of the deceased family member(s) and how
many family and friends you estimate might be
coming.
THE DAY CHAPEL: A WONDERFUL ASSET FOR US!
At this busy time of the year, it is good to remember that
our Day Chapel (to the right side of the church) is open for
prayer during the day. Some people have asked about the
“official” opening times for the Day Chapel and for the
Church, so here they are…
The Day Chapel is usually open from 5.45 am Mondays to
Fridays (except if there is something like a public holiday).
The Day Chapel usually closes on weekdays at around
9.00 pm (except on Fridays when we have Eucharistic
Adoration and the chapel is open until midnight).
On Saturdays, the Day Chapel is open from around 8.00
am until shortly after the end of the Saturday evening Mass
(the main church is usually opened at 2.45 pm or so, ready
for the celebration of the sacrament of reconciliation and
then for the 4.30 pm Mass).
On Sundays, the Main Church and Day Chapel are open
from around 6.45 am (or a little before) until after the 5.30
pm Mass.
The Day Chapel is a wonderful facility to have, especially
as we have the Blessed Sacrament reserved there too; so
please do make use of it if you wish. Call in, even for just
a few moments of prayer, peace, focus and reflection on
the way to or coming back from school, work, shopping,
running errands or whenever you are just passing by the
church. Those few moments will certainly not be
wasted…!
