Dear Friends,
For many, the start of
the New Year signals
the end to the
Christmas season. I
know of families who
spend New Year’s Day busily packing away
Christmas until the next year. Looking
forward to getting their houses back to
normal and the return to regular life and
routines. However at North Shore UMC,
we will not be removing the tree, the
nativity, the garland, the candles and other
trappings until the close of our Epiphany
Sunday service. The church calendar seeks
to hold onto the Christmas season awhile
longer.
Yet- when that time arrives for us to “pack
away” Christmas, I wish for us to hold onto
the gift we have received, the gift that the
Magi honored as they came to pay homage
to this Savior for all nations. For we have
received the wonderful gift of God’s love
and mercy that is found in Jesus, the
Messiah. Yes, the Wise Men brought with
them regal gifts, but their worship and
adoration of Jesus was their most important
gift to him. This action reminds us that the
gifts we bring are not as important as the
way we are to live in response to God
entering into our lives.
Yes, it is the start of the New Year; and, it
is also time to move onto other tasks and
activities. But, perhaps we can make a New
Year’s resolution, one that calls us to not
“put Jesus away” so quickly as we move into
the coming weeks and year. This year, may
we resolve to pay Jesus homage and never
forget the reason for our worship each
Sunday. This year, may the light of Jesus
the Christ shine throughout the days and
months of 2015 as we devote our very lives
of ministry to him.
Peace,
Pastor Glenna

The study will use the aid of a book
entitled "Making Sense of the
Bible" by Adam Hamilton. It
approaches the Bible through
topics; such as violence, gender,
homosexuality, etc. presenting
different approaches we can use
when reading scripture. Put your
name on the sign-up sheet in the
narthex. We need to know how many
will be attending the study in order to
get the necessary number pf books.
More details about that later.

The 2014 Advent season begins
In Western Christianity, Advent begins on
the fourth Sunday prior to Christmas – in
2014 November 30 is the first Sunday in
Advent.
As is customary for North Shore United
Methodist Church, “Hanging of the
Greens” begins the season of preparation
and expectation (as Advent is known),
leading into one of the happiest and most
magical times in the liturgical year;
Christmas.
This year, the church was buzzing with
extra activity on November 30. While some
members of the congregation climbed
ladders and fluffed garlands, preparing the
church for the beautiful Christmas season,
another group of volunteers set-up the
narthex for the afternoon’s opening concert
of the North Shore Chamber Arts Ensemble
– “Cookies, Cocoa and Carols”.
The extremely well attended concert
delighted many with Christmas and
Hanukkah stories. A few of the musical
highlights were violin solos of Hanukkah
music, the aria “Rejoice” from Handel’s
Messiah, and a wonderful rendition of the
1944 song by Frank Loesser, “Baby, It’s
Cold Outside,” in a duet arrangement.
The second Sunday in Advent was gleefully
celebrated with a performance of part one of
Handel’s Messiah. This work, performed by
the North Shore Chamber Arts Ensemble,
has become somewhat of a tradition in the
church and is one of the better attended
programs of the musical group – this year
be no exception.
Maestro David Rubens led the musical
forces (eight vocalists supported by an
equal amount of instrumentalists) following
the original performance of the work in
Dublin in April1741. The only deviation
from the 1741 premiere in the performance
by the North Shore Chamber Arts
Ensemble was that every soloists doubled
as chorus members as well.
The advent/Christmas seasons bring rather
hectic times to the church, with some sort
of celebration taking place at the church
each Sunday of Advent; all-the-while other
church-related-activities happening
throughout the congregation away from the
church buildings.
The “UMW Christmas Cookies and
Ornament Party” is one of those
congregational activities. Traditionally held
by Bev Fetzer for the past few years, the
party has been a staple of the celebrations
for some time now.
Each year the party seems to get larger and
more festive. “We had a great time last
night. Thirty-two people – amazing!” Said
Beverly about the party. (See following page for
a number of pictures from the location)

December 21 celebrated the Christmas
pageant during the service, immediately
followed by the magnificent
Congregational-wide luncheon. That
afternoon, several members of the church
gathered in the narthex to sing Christmas
carols and sip hot cocoa.
The Christmas Eve Service, with a
beautiful candlelight singing of "Silent
Night", is a dreamlike tradition many
cherish. The year was capped on December
28 with the quiet celebrations to the
newborn King, guided by Caitlyn Butler,
2014 educational intern.

Reconciling Task Force
The Reconciling Task Force has been created to
explore the possibility of becoming a
Reconciling Congregation. The task force was
unanimously endorsed by the Church Council
and voted on at the Charge Conference in
November. A Reconciling Congregation is a
United Methodist local church that has adopted
a Reconciling statement that publicly states the
church welcomes all persons to participate fully
in its congregational life, regardless of sexual
orientation or gender identity. The task force is
in the process of collecting sample Reconciling
Statements. Here is a recently adopted
statement from Christ United Methodist Church
Deerfield:
"As a Reconciling congregation we celebrate
diversity and are dedicated to creating a
welcoming environment for people of all
sexual orientations, gender identities, races,
ethnicities, special needs, or socio-economic
statuses. We encourage ourselves and our
denomination to truly embrace 'open hearts,
open minds, open doors.'"
The task force came about when a number of
our church members expressed concern about
the worldwide United Methodist Church stance
on homosexuality and approached Pastor
Glenna to learn more. The task force plans to
have a few educational Adult Forums to learn
about this issue in the church. The first Adult
Forum will be on January 11 when we will have
a speaker from the Reconciling Ministries
Network.
The process of becoming a Reconciling
Congregation is by prayer, discussion, study and
discernment through our Wesleyan tradition.
After this process and the draft of a Reconciling
Statement for the church, an all-church vote
would take place.
Most of our neighboring United Methodist
Churches are Reconciling Congregations -
Northbrook, Deerfield, Lake Bluff, Glenview,
Arlington Heights, Evanston and Park Ridge.
Trinity in Wilmette is in the process. There are
a number of churches in the city including First
UMC-Chicago Temple and churches in the
western suburbs that are also Reconciling
Congregations. Currently, there are 634
churches, communities and campus ministries
nationally that are Reconciling.
The Reconciling Task Force has prepared a fact
sheet that is available in the Narthex. Please
take a copy or contact a member of the task
force if you have questions or comments.
