THE BIG ISSUES

SHOULD I AVOIDPALM OILNGOs suggest sustainable palm is the best option because:
• It is very efficient – any replacement would require more
land.
• It also provides millions of jobs in countries such as
Indonesia and Malaysia and
• it is very hard to replace due to its unique properties.
But it’s about personal choice and some people choose to
go palm free.
HOW CAN I BECONFIDENT? The Giki app shows which products contain palm oil and
whether it is sustainable. We rate either at company or
product level. For companies, we look at the type of palm
oil they buy, and whether they are committed to fully
sustainable palm oil by 2020. For products, we use the
RSPO on pack certification.
THE PROBLEM WITHPALM OIL
Unsustainable palm oil leads to deforestation, threatens
orangutans with extinction and contributes to climate
change. Local communities miss out too.
