What We’ll Cover

• What is OpenPublic?

• What are its design highlights?

• How can you get involved?

Distributions

“A starting point.

What is a Distribution ?

A unique combination of modules, themes, & configuration... aimed at a

specific business problem.

“ ”

Distributions are full copies of Drupal that include Drupal Core, along with additional so!ware such as themes, modules, libraries, and installation profiles. There are two main types of Drupal distributions:

OpenPublic provides a content management system specifically designed for government requirements, without compromising accessibility, security, or usability.

OpenPublic is built to be the most accessible and secure open source CMS available.

OpenPublic is used by Ready.gov, FEMA.gov, DHS.gov, the Wilson Center, Case Foundation, and the Georgia Technology Authority.

Open Atrium is a collaboration platform designed to help organizations manage their

communications, teams, and knowledge.

As a flexible, open source solution, Atrium is not a single, standalone “solution,” but a platform

that can be used to create an intranet, web portal, social forum, or project management

tool, or a combination of these.

Users of OpenAtrium include Whitehouse.gov, and the Department of Homeland Security

OpenPublic Adoption Paths

• use it as a template to get started with your site/platform build

• build your site/platform with it and stay aligned

OpenPublic 1.0

But, why talk about “1.0” now?

We’ve built some very big public sector sites and platforms with OpenPublic now.

It works.

Admittedly, maybe we should call it 2.0.

Our Original Goals• Build an OpenSource CMS for the Public Sector, using

what we learned from publishing (and OpenPublish on Drupal 6)

• Try and help make it easier to meet new OpenGov and transparency standards

• Make the best possible tool for building a site (Accessibility, Security… eventually Responsive)

• Create a concrete point to talk about best practices in the community

Problems We’ve Encountered• Di"icult for contributors to create and share

functionality among di!erent sites

• More optional features: multi-site and platforms mean more features are optional, even within a codebase

• Need to make it easier for implementers to stay aligned with OpenPublic, extend it, and contribute back

New 1.0 Goals• 80% Site < 20% E"ort

• Easier Platform builds

• Be able to share “ideas”

• Instant Test Drives

”“ We need to use Apps to break up

OpenPublic into very modular pieces

We want to be able to have the apps add

functionality to other things, and let people

control where they add it.

So!ware Architect, Phase2

Erik Summerfield

We want apps to be able to add their functionality to stu" in the site, like…

• adding mapping features to every content type

• adding SOLR searching and filtering to content types

• adding social media sharing to select custom content types

We need a new way to use features for new work.
