Treatment of dataDescriptive statistics tackled frequency, weighted mean, percentage and ranking

Inferential statistics utilized is Pearsons r (Correlation).

F-test was used to interpret the difference in the level of knowledge along Awareness, Acceptance, and Utilization.

Hypotheses treatment is interpreted at 0.05 significance level.

1. What is the level of knowledge of the respondents on the OADL of BSU in terms of:

AwarenessNot Aware

AcceptanceAcceptable

Utilization Never Utilized

Problems & Results

• 2. Is there a difference on the level of knowledge of the respondents on the OADL of BSU in terms of:– Awareness (Not Significant)

• Not Aware

– Acceptance (Significant)• Students= Accepted/ Non-Teaching=Very Much

Accepted / Faculty= Accepted

– Utilization (Significant)

• Students= SU / Non-Teaching=NU / Faculty= NU

Hypothesis: There is a difference on the level of knowledge of therespondents on the OADL of BSU in terms of awareness, acceptance, and of utilization.

Problems & Results

• 3. Is there a correlation between Awareness, Acceptance, and Utilization of respondents on BSU OADL?

• No Correlation– Awareness r Acceptance = NO– Awareness r Utilization = NO– Acceptance r Awareness= NO– Acceptance r utilization = NO

• Hypothesis: there is a correlation between Awareness, Acceptance, and Utilization of respondents on the OADL of BSU.

Problems & Results

4. What plan may be drawn to enhance the Open Access Digital Library in terms of

– Awareness

– Acceptance

– Utilization

A Promotion plan is drawn to enhance the Awareness, Acceptance, and Utilization of BSU OADL

Problems & Results

Awareness - Respondents do not differ significantly* Generally, respondents are NOT AWARE of BSU OADL

Acceptance - Respondents may have similar level of acceptance(description) but significantly different from each other.* Non-teaching staff' level of acceptance is significantly

different (Higher approval) from the level of acceptance of facultyand students.

Utilization - Students' level of utilization is significantly different(better usage) from the level of utilization of faculty

and Non-teaching staff.

• Creation of promotional plan must be a team effort involving the librarians, students, non-teaching personnel, and faculty

• The librarians must continually attend marketing seminars, education, and training courses, to ensure that marketing becomes a higher priority in the promotion of library services and activities.

• Librarians must use varied marketing strategies in promoting their services and activities, i.e. web marketing, making virtual connections from the library’s physical space, traditional marketing, etc.

• Evaluation of library services must be continually carried out to ensure customer satisfaction

Recommendations

• Library services like the BSU OADL must be customized( migration) to meet the user needs, i.e. regular updating ofcontents of the BSU OADL.

• Results of this study must be shared to all library stakeholders thru public presentations

• The drafted promotional plan must be implemented and followed through.

• There should be a designated librarian to be in charge of the OADL, whose duties in the OADL will be included in the job description.

• There must be a hands-on training for the users or extensive literacy orientation on the BSU OADL.

Questions?

Now, what is the challenge and future of BSU OADL?

1. Sustainability• Content population

• Responsible person

2. Googlezation (crawling and registration)

Is BSU OADL discoverable in Surface or Deep web?

Database Discoverability

• Surface webThe surface Web (also known as the Clearnet, the visibleWeb or indexable Web) is that portion of the WorldWide Web that is indexable by conventional searchengines.

• Deep web(also called the Deepnet, Invisible Web, or Hidden Web) is the portion of World Wide Web content that is not indexed by standard search engines.

Database Discoverability

Cloud Based Discovery Services

SURFACE WEB

Now, what is the challenge and future of BSU OADL?

3. Inclusion to Web discovery services ( Take all)

Discovery controversy

• Opac is dead (Gent University) • Thinking the unthinkable : doing away with the library catalogue

• More and more users find their way to licensed journals through search engines like Google Scholar. Users switch to databases such as Web of Science and Scopus or to specialized databases

• Libraries have lost their role as primary source of information.

So, act accordingly! information discovery has left the building.

Note: International studies confirm this trend

Discovery controversy

Where users start searching? (Ithaka US Faculty Survey 2012)

Discovery controversy

Now, what is the challenge and future of BSU OADL?

4. Dark WiFi (my wild vision)

(stand alone with 50m radius wifi zone

and as a back during current blackout)

• Useful discovery services if internet is down

• Caters to institutions without internet connections

• Ideal for copyrighted digital materials (manual, purchase resources, etc)

• Effective during Political issues

Is it too technical? or financially incapable?

Well, as an alternative, just create a blog linking to

• DOAR

• DOAJ

• DOAB

• OATD

• GOOGLE SCHOLAR

• And others that may help your users

So, DON’T Stress yourselves!

Hindi ka naman present lagi, in the mode, at matalino lagi…

Presentation Conclusion

• Open access has a big role in federated searches, electronic and web scale discovery

• BSU OADL is relatively new services in the Philippines that will serve as model for other academic institutions.

Challenge

Basically and we must try…as information

professionals, our works must be discoverable!
