s i ~ a l s MM 3/9 around ham & wm a fine ef for t by hss. I inwine they got out well, alth0uEfi it was a very poor AM generally for the East. WHAM-1180 was in- audible, & WIS was very weak. WHU didn't put up much of a f ight t o keep R. Irop- i ca l from coming on 1040 the same AM. The South was i n very well, though, w / ~~118-1180 s/on @Uf: :31am EST & OAX2X i n Truj i l lo , Peru, on 1559 l ike a Colombian @ 5:38. Also a weak one on 1l65 i n what seemed an Indian dialect @ 5:23-5:28, I think Quevado, Ecuador, per I D @ 5:28. And 2NA-1510 heard weakly @ 4 w/five pips & ABC theme, although WRAN was On top. It was what I'd ca l la typica l Spring MM & seemed Auroral. I hope other members got sane d is tant DX, & as Spring & Summer approach, I hope most w i l l s tay a t the dials. 73.

This had been one of ~qy m a s t frustrating mes, as I had heard it almost every MM f o r several months, b ~ t never v e l l enough t o report. Now, hcwwer, it is reported & verified. Also KGIW-1450 Colo., beat- en by N.Z., but t he only N.Z. report was "sane 20 or 22 year* a30M. Then, the f i r s t of what I hope w i l l be m a veries fo r ~qy run of Ky. receptions in Feb., WAFI-1560 Ky., KWM-1400 Tex., KDDD-800 Tex., a nice 250v cetch a t the m o r e chal- lenglw hi&-frequency end. l i s t i w i n DDXD for 3/14. I have been collecting patterns for 18 months & core- la t ing reception w/calculations of radiated pwer t o establish agreement or d is - a,geement-calculations t o experience. The sheets do, a s he says, give pound- wave values. The resul ts have been conclusive i n favor of being able t o predict reception si tuations w/extrerne accuracy. I have traveled t o distant places and can easik- predict ahead of time what t o expect when I arrive. Recent exchan.;es w/~ichard .load confirm the correlation w e r distances up t o 5,000 miles. Consid- er the angle a t which energy m i s t leave the antenna s i t e i n order t o span long distances. The angle must be ve r j lcw, the longer t he distance, the l w e r t h e a ~ l e . Ixsmination of a ve r t i ca l plot of a normal ver t ica l brcadcast antenna shcws thpt maximum radiation on any bearing occurs a t ground level. As the ele- vation i s increasd toward ver t ica l , thd field intentisy is reduced u n t i l it reaches zero (ideally) directly w e r t he antenna. This is t rue in nul ls a s well as on peaks. The KSCO calculation gave 6 watts tcward me & I had previously es- timated ew copy of them here t o be highly unlikely. When I did copy them, it qual i f ie l as an unlikely experience, & I contacted them. I found they were 25Ow non-directional a t the tine. The estimate tha t 6w t o here from Santa C N Z is un- l ikely holds - the copy a t 250w was marginal. I am preparing an a r t i c l e fo r GFT& ctmsider~tion on t h i s subject. The object is t o present accurate information useful t o the general membership & hopefilly t o present a method by Ybich quanti- ta t ive inforotation can be made available t o those who want it. No question tha t i f i f the skip is working, the s ta t ion can be heard i f the channel is clear, but h m good a n i ~ h t do you need, and which other s ta t ions w i l l interfere hov much? The object is t o DX smr te r , & t h i s i s a s tep tward be t t e r understarding. wTIC and lEUl protect each other w/pt terns . The FCC specifies the ground-vave pattern for proof, & the CJ?a c i t e maximum allowable radiated values a t ground level. Is a l l 0s t h i s irrelevant?
