President's Message
To the Members of the NJBBA, It is with some sadness and also anticipation that I am writing what will be my final President's message. Due to my ongoing health problems and wanting to spend more quality time with my family and friends, I will not be seeking re-election for a third term as President of the NJBBA. I have thought a great deal about this and concluded that if I couldn't give 110%, it would be a disservice to our organization. I anticipate having to travel more to see doctors since my MSA (Multiple Sys-tem Atrophy) requires seeking out health care profes-sionals that are not in our area. With that being said, I also would like to take the time to spend with my fam-ily that is not nearby. In closing, I hope that I have served you well in my ten-ure as President. I certainly have strived to put the good of the NJBBA, as well as trying to uphold our mis-sion statement first and foremost. To those who have helped in achieving these goals, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Best regards & tight lines, Tim Burden ----<")/////><(

A SPECIAL THANK YOU
By Paul Harris
I would like to extend a special thank you to all the volunteers that worked with me this
past year spending most every Saturday though out the winter in all kinds of weather
to put up 1,000’s of feet of fence, haul materials with your trucks, and to the guys who
manned the augers for hours at a time. Then came a time when we started putting in Post & Rail which
we have never done before. It took a little time to work it out, but you figured it out and in no time, hun-
dreds of feet of post & rail were put in within an hour. All the volunteers are to be thanked and the auger
operators did some job and if it wasn’t for them, it could not have been done. At the end all you got was
satisfaction that you did something for the park and a hot dog for your effort. Big thanks to Carole and
the people who helped her to provide food and drinks.
Thanks again and I hope everyone comes out and supports whoever is going to run beach projects next
year. By participating, it enables NJBBA to be the largest volunteer association in the state.
Thank You,
Paul Harris Get Involved! Stay Involved!

Beach Driving Clinic
This past year the NJBBA has been able to sponsor two clinics on Beach Driving. As in the past
we were able to hold one at Island Beach State Park and Brigantine welcomed us back. These
classes have become so popular, those that have been unable to attend are asking if we could
sponsor new ones in the fall. Because of commitments that have already made that have limited
our time this was impossible to do. With the new year we are starting now to set dates. We are
looking at the latter part of March, beginning of April for IBSP and Brigantine to be in April. Please check our web-
site calendar as time draws near. There will also be postings on a couple of the fishing boards. Please remember
that that there is a limit to the number of enrollees in each class so that during the actual beach part of the class
everyone can receive personal attention.
Great Fall Classic
This past year NJBBA has continued the tradition of the 37th Annual Great Fall Classic Plans are in progress for
the 38th Great Fall Classic to be held on Oct 15th, 2016. Please mark this date as we will need help for the contin-
ued success of this event. This past year we had only 14 volunteers , that included judges, lunch servers, score
keepers, and ticket sellers. The amount of work that hosting a tournament entails, this was taxing on those volun-
teers. We need the help, especially from younger members as we are not getting any younger. This is also a
good time to re-establish old ties and camaraderie. Results can be found on the web site.
Veterans Outing
As in the past, we sponsor two fishing outings for the Veterans from the Vineland Veteran's Hospital in Stone Har-
bor in June and July. They gave so much to us, this has been our way of giving them a well deserved Thank you.
This event came about through a fellow member and Vet, Swannie Gay (#4103), over 12 years ago. Swannie has
since past on but the tradition continues. Please consider coming out to help the Vets to enjoy a day out fishing.
The Need for Volunteers
NJBBA has always been a service organization, a strong proponent for beach access, and promoter of land based
fishing. This was demonstrated by the numbers that turned out to help after Super Storm Sandy. Now, the same
few extremely active members need your help. The volunteer time that the members of NJBBA have logged has
not gone un-noticed. The clubs help in the past has established the NJBBA name, especially when it comes to our
continued support for access. Over the past Sixty plus years we have done much, but the need is always there.
Please watch for the call for volunteers through the year.

NJBBA COURTESY PATROL
The season is almost at the end for 2015…
Please submit your courtesy patrol hours to me at: Shortnsassy120@comcast.net or you can mail the reports to me
at the address that is at the bottom of your volunteer sheet. Again it was another rough summer for the patrols try-
ing to keep the beach safe and helping people with vehicles that got stuck. Some thank the courtesy patrol for their
help, others just drove away. We have a good patrol and they do a great job in helping. I need to finalize the tally
for 2015. At the end of the year you will get your 3 points for being on the patrol. In Dec. all of the reports will go to
the DEP in Trenton, and also to the superintendents and managers of the parks. This is very important so they can
see what we do as a volunteer group. I would like to thank you all again for doing such a great job. There is a Hot
line number (877-927-6337) that is manned 24/7. If you see any infractions of beach rules and regulations, please
report them to this number.

NJBBA Website…….. By Dave Paulick #3648
We broke our old record of 2 million hits back in September this year. Now at the end of 2015 we have set a new record at 2 ½ million hits. It is wonderful that members and non members are finding that our website is very infor-mative. We being a state wide organization and with so many of our own events going on, the website is forever changing. It makes me very happy to see this new milestone that we hit this year.
The website has a new page titled “Around the Community”, that are new events that we attend. Also our cloth-ing page has taken on a new look, with pictures of all the merchandize we sell. Along with three new stile hats, a NJBBA license plate that you can get your number on or just NJBBA. We also have a round logo key chain that you can also have your number put on the back.
I also send out the email blast, titled “New Jersey Beach Buggy News”. These emails help you keep up with what is happening in your organization. Like events, coming up that you might want to attend. If you are not getting these emails or you were and they have stopped, you need to update your email address with us. Send me your addresses to basshawg@njbba.com, so I can put you on the list. I will also forward them to our Membership Secre-tary, Ken Hollins to keep your information up to date.

Youth Surfing Fishing Tournament By Chris LeLong
The 22nd annual NJBBA Youth Surfing Fishing Tournament was held on Saturday September 12, 2015. The weather and surf were perfect for a day of fishing. This year 113 children up to the age of 16 participated in the event. The day started with all participants attending educational stations on fishing, safety and marine life. Thank you to NJBBA members, NJ Fish & Wildlife, Jenkinson's Aquarium, Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs, Seaside Park Fire Dept and Island Beach State Park for educating our participants. During the fishing portion of the event the participants entered 31 fish including fluke, bluefish, sea robins, dogfish and stargazers. After the famous Beach Buggy hot dog lunch, trophies and prizes were awarded.
Huge thanks to all the sponsors and donors who make this event possible year after year. Without the very gener-ous support of our sponsors it would not be possible for us to send EVERY child home with a goody bag, T-Shirt, full belly and a prize of their choice. Not to mention gift cards for parents and a rod/reel combo & trophy for each winner. Please visit our sponsors, shop with them and thank them for supporting NJBBA.
Thank you to the staff of Island Beach State Park for providing the venue and helping make this year’s tournament a success. THANK YOU to all the NJBBA members for their time and effort putting this event together.

FUTURE FISHERMEN
Last year the NJBBA was asked to give help to a newly formed High School fishing club named
South Toms River High School and the board Okayed it. Through the spring, a few members met at
the school to give some information to the club on fishing, tying knots and casting. We also went to
the beach to fish until school recessed for the summer. When school reopened, we went back to
help support the club and then met with them at Seaside Park beach on Wednesday afternoons from
2:30 PM till 5:00 PM where they caught some fish. At that time we had 14 kids, 2 teachers and 4
members. There are other high schools with existing fishing clubs and in time it looks like there will
be fishing tournaments. We hope South Toms River High School will be able to compete. These kids
are our future fishermen and hopefully future NJBBA members. If you would like to help in any way,
please contact me at 732-269-8878.

The Best of Times
By Mark Dzindzio #207
Our good friend, fishing legend and past president Bob Lick has
turned that big Dodge Beach Buggy of his west and headed home for
a final time. He came east from Wyoming this past September with a
friend and attended the Bluegrass festival in Woodstown, a high
school reunion, spent some time in Montauk and ended up at IBSP for
a good month and a half. When the weather turned bad he made the
best of it by visiting family and friends. My wife and I had the chance to
make a few trips and fish with him and friends at IBSP.
Bob first visited Island Beach before it became a state park and was known as ‘Phipps Estate’ in 1956. I really enjoy
hearing the stories of those early days and there are many! Quite a few tales have been printed in this newsletter
over the years. There were no paved parking areas along the road, so fisherman would pull off the road wherever
they wanted to fish. Most had their favorite spots and would count the poles along the road.
My guess is, it probably wasn’t hard to find where they were catching at the time.
One of Bob’s favorite places on the planet is right here at IBSP, the Judge’s Shack! Located
between areas 12 and 13 is probably one of the most photographed places on IBSP. While
visiting Bob and friends this past October, Bob had set up a meeting with one of the ‘Friends
of the Judges Shack’ members and he was kind enough to open it up and give us a tour. Al-
though it is in need of some work it has held up quite well over the years. He told us how help-
ful the NJBBA has been in the past and looks forward to future endeavors.
When it pertains to fishing Bob is all business and was very fortunate, a quote he mentions
quite often ‘My friends and I have seen the best of times!’ Back when the fish were plentiful
and the rules and regulations null. He motored on the sand from Maine south to the great Outer
Banks of North Carolina, with a special love for Montauk. But he always came back to IBSP, just
couldn’t stay away. That’s where he drove his first beach buggy the “Sand Hopper” and started to
earn those great memories. And he did just that, he earned the respect of many, and made last-
ing friendships where ever he traveled.
Going back a few years when he lived in NJ, I visited Bob one night and took my Crack reel over for some customiz-
ing. We went downstairs to his workshop where he removed the spool and using a template drilled holes which
would allow the reel to be used underwater. He had quite a few to his name and bins of parts to repair when the
need came about. The reel was used while wet suiting but needed servicing be-
tween trips and he did, all his Crack reels looked like they were right out of the box.
Bob had quite a rep in Montauk and had actually introduced the first graphite rod, an
11 foot lamiglass which he built himself. This brings me to a story that happened
while we were all together this fall at IBSP. Among the group of us that day on the
beach with Bob was Jim, a lifelong friend; Fred and his son Eric; Dave and I. We
were sitting there when Bob stood up and walked to the front of his truck. When he
came back, Bob had that 11 foot ‘Lami’ with him and handed it to Eric, walked away
and opened another compartment then presented Eric with one of his prize Crack
reels. Eric was speechless and I had tears in my eyes which were hidden from view
by a pair of sunglasses. Eric caught his first Striper of the season using the outfit a
few weeks later.
(Cont. on next page)
December 2015 Page 13
Although Bob was at IBSP for roughly 7 weeks the fish didn’t cooperate and he ended up
having to leave the beach before the fall run started. Bob had his family down to IBSP for a
week before he left, they all enjoyed the warm weather, fished and even sat around a fire on
the beach and talked about old times.
In the past Bob was always there for me, a mentor for sure, shoot, kind of like a big brother.
I’m going to miss seeing his beach buggy at IBSP, guess we will have to board a plane and
go see the big guy in Wyoming. I believe with all my heart though that he’ll be back to fish
IBSP again!
The NJBBA Surf Fishing Team Quad-peats!
Well they did it again! The NJBBA Surf Fishing Team wins the ASAC championship for the 4th consecutive year.
The dedicated members of the team consisted of Lynda & Kevin Greaves, Kurt Renart, Joe McGowen, Ralph Delucca and Bolli Mam. It was a tough battle with some real good teams all year and it came down to the last tour-nament of the season to decide the overall winner. Our team went in with a narrow lead and needed a strong showing to clinch. The Hudson River Fishing Tournament turned out to be a sundial contest with no blues or bass caught. While we did not get the win, we did manage to finish third place which was good enough to keep us in front. We are glad to win this for the club and Tim Burden especially. It is good to see him finish his term as presi-dent with a winning team. There will be some changes to the team next season so please stay tuned. Kurt Renart a.k.a. Fish Bucket

NJBBA Beach Caretakers
By Greg Kucharewski # 164
The New Jersey Beach Buggy Association volunteers help support a clean ocean and beach but do more to sustain an
everlasting effect by example. During September 1969, I returned from military service, I walked the beach fishing early in the
morning or at times when I could not sleep. Back then, I always enjoyed walking the beach and I still do now but move much
slower. I would always park at the Top of the Mast restaurant and plug for bass past the Governor’s Mansion. I remember see-
ing headlights on the beach in Island Beach State Park and wished I could afford a 4X4 vehicle.
Eventually, I met some of the anglers that drove those vehicles on the beach and got to know them. I noticed most of
the guys stopped to pick up wood and garbage on the beach as they drove along. They loaded it in the back of their beach bug-
gies, sometimes on the passenger seat. When I asked what they were doing they told me we are cleaning the beach and mak-
ing sure the vehicle tracks are clear for other users. These guys were true sportsmen and set a good example for others to fol-
low. Who would of thought? Fishing and cleaning the beach during the fall run of Striped Bass! Over time, I made small contri-
butions to the pile of debris in their beach buggies and learned from these anglers. They were members of the New Jersey
Beach Buggy Association and the Seaside Heights Fishing Club.
I was the new kid on the block and we fished together whenever they happened to meet me walking the beach. I am
not able to remember all the names, but I recall Guy, Jack, Butch, Big John, George, and Carl. They would give me a ride back
to my car so I could attend classes at Ocean County College on time. This was my introduction to being a “Beach Caretaker”
and passing it along to others. I learned from the best.
I am proud to be a member of the NJBBA. The men and women of the NJBBA and their leadership continue the tradi-
tion of passing this important message along to our young anglers. It’s obvious they are experts of volunteerism and set the
example of good teamwork. They work closely with the Department of Environmental Protection and New Jersey Fish and Wild-
life.
All you need to do is view the NJBBA website and the “Beach Caretaker” message is loud and clear for all to see.
Among NJBBA’s decades of accomplishments are the planting of dune grass, dune fence projects, beach access, youth fishing/
aquatic education clinics, courtesy patrol assistance/volunteer hours, beach clean-ups, beach driving clinics, high school fishing
education, veteran outings, promotional environmental awareness booths, rebuilding after Super Storm Sandy and past weather
events, mobile access, annual scholarship awards, and providing disabled access. If that isn’t enough, NJBBA partners with
other organizations that promote the same values, such as; New Jersey Outdoor Alliance, Jersey Coast Anglers Association, NJ
State Federation of Sportsman Clubs, United Four Wheel Drive Association, Association of Surf Anglers, Clean Ocean Action,
United Mobile Access Preservation Association, Blue Ribbon Coalition, along with others.
Over the years, I assisted many family members, friends, organizations, and individual acquaintances by offering per-
sonal help. Volunteering to help others, when your own tasks need attention, is the hardest decision to make. We must keep in
mind rule #1 when making a volunteer commitment “Family First.” I must admit I broke rule # 1 a few times and my hot meals
turned into a boloney sandwiches. Yes, I got the message and paid more attention to family responsibilities. It was a matter of
balance and putting volunteerism in perspective. Please understand my love one’s wanted me to volunteer, but I needed to
make better choices about the amount of time spent volunteering verses family obligations as a young father.
Forty-six years later I still volunteer but kicked it back a few notches. I now have grandchildren and I do not want to
make the same mistakes I made in my earlier years. I’ve learned to say NO and learned to be a better volunteer. Instead of
saying yes and doing a mediocre job or showing up late when people were depending on me, I decided to make better choices
about volunteering because I didn’t feel my prior performance was to my personal standard. I’m now able to do a better job as
a volunteer because I can organize tasks and allow more time to prepare for my volunteer job. I realized that rushing to volun-
teer was very stressful and I needed to slow down to be a better volunteer.
Volunteering has allowed me to make many friends. It’s like a family of caring people and as with any family it can be
challenging at times to balance time and everyone’s busy schedules. What is most important about volunteerism is mentoring in
new volunteers and it is great to see so many younger men and women volunteering at NJBBA events. They are the future and
I am sure they will continue the “Beach Caretaker” tradition and keep the momentum of recruiting new volunteers. It’s not al-
ways about the fish you catch. It’s about time spent with family and friends at a clean beach you have access to.

National Hunting & Fishing Day
By Angel Prouty #4522
The 43rd Annual Hunting & Fishing Day Celebration was held on Saturday September 26, 2014.
Due to high winds and rough surf at IBSP we were forced to relocate to an alternative location at the last
minute. It was a very windy day and nothing was holding in the ocean when we met at IBSP. Thankfully
the group was resourceful and made several urgent phone calls so that with the cooperation of all those
present as well as assistance from the IBSP staff we were able to adapt and overcome and found a suit-
able alternative for fishing on the Bay, at the Seaside Park Municipal 14th Avenue and Bay Fishing Pier. It
was a great location, very accessible, with plenty of parking. With a few conveniences (ie a porta potty) it
may be a possible new location for this event.
Approximately 25 special needs children and their families were able to find us at our last minute loca-
tion, including a new group: Our Special Kids of Toms River. Roughly 35 NJBBA members and volun-
teers assisted. I would say that every child was able to catch at least a Blow fish that day, others were
able to catch miscellaneous other items. The famous Gourmet Beach Buggy hot dog lunch was served
and was a big hit as usual.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you to all the NJBBA members who came out, made phone calls, agreed
to relocate at the last minute and assisted the children; this is a truly rewarding day and the smiles on the
children’s and adults faces really makes it fun. Next year’s event will be on Saturday September 24,
2016. Hope to see everyone out there again!

President Cup Fishing Tournament
It was a beautiful Sunday morning this past November 1st. 16 people came out to fish the
President Cup Tournament. After hours of fun and laughter our past president Paul Harris
caught the only fish ALLLLLL Day! It was a 12 1/2 inch winter flounder and he ended up win-
ning for IBSP.
