Itisagreatpleasuretowelcomeyoutothe2nd International Annual Conference of the German Stem Cell Network (GSCN) at the German CancerResearchCenter(DKFZ)inHeidelberg.
Themostimportantdevelopmentduring2014hasundoubtedlybeenthecontinuedcommitmentoftheBundesministeriumfürBildungundForschung (BMBF) to support the GSCN for threemore years. ThiswaspossibleduetotheoverwhelmingGerman-widesupportfromallof our members and the success of the 1st Annual GSCN Conference inBerlinlastautumn.Today,weareveryexcitedtostartthesecondGSCNconferencewithapackedprogramandevenmorecutting-edgeresearchaswellasavarietyofworkshops.
The 2nd International Annual Conference of the GSCNprovidesanopportunityforscientists,cli-nicians,educatorsandindustryprofessionalstosharenewdata,learnfrompeers,anddiscoverglobaladvanceswithinthestemcellfield.Topicscoverthelatestfindingsinstemcellbiology,fromgeneticandepigeneticmechanismsofreprogrammingandmaintenanceofpluripotency,tothemolecularbasisofself-renewalanddifferentiation.Theconferencewillfostertheinter-actionbetweenresearchersworkingondifferenttypesofstemcells,includingembryonicstemcells,stemcellsduringdevelopmentandinadultorgansaswellascancerstemcells.Moreover,theapplicationofstemcellsinregenerativetherapies,diseasemodelinganddrugdevelopmentwillrepresentthetranslationalandappliedangleofthefield.Finally,sessionsonstrategicissuesrelatingtostemcellresearchsuchascareerdevelopment,publicoutreach,fundingpoliciesandclinicaltrialsusingstemcellswillcompletetheprogram.
Withmanyspeakersselectedfromthebestabstracts,theconferenceisaplatformfortheentirescientific communityprovidinguniqueopportunitiesespecially for young talented scientists.TheprogramisflankedbyafewselectedKeynotelecturesgivenbyinternationalleadersintheirfield.TheGSCNconferencewillbedirectlyfollowedbytheJointSatelliteSymposiumonNeuralStemCellswhichlastsuntilNovember6th(freeofchargeforGSCNConferenceparticipants).
Wearelookingforwardtothreebusydayspackedwithinput,discussion,newinsightsandnewcontacts,therefreshingofoldconnectionsandaconstantlygrowingfascinationforourresearchwiththemostexcitingcellsweknowof:stemcells.Iamdelightedtoseeallofyouinmyhome-townofHeidelbergandwishyouastimulatingandproductivemeeting.

Humanembryonicstemcellsandinducedhumanpluripotentstemcells(PSC)haveopenedawiderangeofpossibilitiesintherapeuticalsettingsandfordiseasemodelinganddrugdevelop-ment.Largescalebankingofthesecellshasbecomeamajortrendworldwide.SeveralPSCbank-ingprojectsinEuropearefundedbytheEuropeanCommissionandpharmaceuticalindustryforpreclinicaldrugassessment,mode-of-actionstudiesandtherapeuticuse.Globalregistrationofpluripotentstemcellswillbeinstrumentalfortheefficientfutureuseoftheseresources.Thisworkshopwillshowthecurrenteffortsonderivation,bankingandregistrationofhumanPSCs.
