4th century B.C.
Helmont supported this theory on the basis of
his finding that mouse was produced by the reaction
of wheat grain and old clothes, in the 17th century.
Theory of autogenesis of life: the living thing is born without parents, and also from parents.
Aristotle proposed the theory of autogenesis of life for the first time, and said that eel is born from mud , in the 4th century B.C.
Jan Baptista van Helmont: a chemist, a physician, and an alchemist
Origin of life
(Observation gainsaying the theory of autogenesis of life)
1665: Francesco Redi’s experiments - Dead fishes were put into 2 jars.
- One jar was left open, and the other was covered with fine gauze.
- The 2 jars were left unattended for several days.
While maggots appeared in the open jar, they did not appear in the gauze-
covered jar.
Origin of life
A fly might entered the open bottle and might have laid the egg. This observation showed that the living thing is born only from parents.
(Observation gainsaying the theory of autogenesis of life)
1860s: Pasteur's experiment using a swan-neck flask - Broth in a swan-neck flask was boiled and then cooled. The broth
showed no change.
- Bacteria grew in the broth after the neck of the flask was broken. After the neck was broken,
the bacteria might have entered into the container, and they bred.
This fact precluded the theory of autogenesis of life.

(Oparin)
Theory of chemical evolution by Oparin (1922) A new theory of origin of life
Oparin [Aleksandr Ivanovich Oparin] 1894.3.2–1980.4.21 Oparin was a Soviet biochemist who became a professor at M. V. Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1929 and was involved in the foundation of A.N. Bakh Institute of Biochemistry, USSR Academy of Sciences, in 1935. He became the director of the Institute in 1946 and became a full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He studied the action of oxidases (polyphenol oxidases, in particular) and amylases and paid close attention to the relationship between their action and the function and structure of cells. His achievement in discussing the origin of life from organic and inorganic matter on the Earth was extremely unique, and he pioneered the field of biochemical analysis of evolution (comparative biochemistry). He was also involved in a wide range of social activities. He represented the Soviet Union at the World Peace Council and served as a vice president of the World Federation of Scientific Workers.

Why did alanine undergo polymerization in molten ammonium formate?
Polar compounds are stable in polar media, and unstable in less polar media. Then, polar ammonium formate lowered the activation energy of the polymerization.

The Permian: from 290 to 250 million years ago
The massive extinction of organisms at the Permian-Triassic (P/T) boundary is the
largest extinction event in the history of the Earth. This event resulted in the extinction of
95% of marine species. The extinct biological species included fusulinids, brachiopods,
molluscs, annelids, and arthropods.
The proposed causes of the extinction include asteroid impacts, extensive volcanic
activity, and anoxic events in the oceans.

Origin of petroleum
Origin of petroleum
In the ancient age, dead bodies of plankton, algae, and terrestrial plant sank at the bottom of the sea with mud, and have piled up. And the stratum is formed. The biomolecules contained in the stratum will change into kerogen. Kerogen is decomposed by heat and pressure to release petroleum.

The major neutral lipids in plants contain high proportions of unsaturated fatty acids and are liquids at normal temperatures. The major neutral lipids in animals contain high proportions of saturated fatty acids and are usually solids at normal temperatures. Lipids are effective energy-storage molecules. In plants, lipids are often contained in seeds.
It widely exists in organisms and is
involved in the constitution of cell
membranes and mitochondria. It
forms a lipid bilayer.
Petroleum may have been formed mainly from lipids of the past organism.
