November 6 and 7, 2013 - Springboard 2.2 and 2.3A Toy's World and Changes in My World

Homework:Read your DEAR novelObjective: Students will close read film as text and write in a character's voice Warm Up (in your composition book)Date your notes, write down the objectiveIn your comp book...Write a 5-7 sentence paragraph describing a favorite toy you had as a child (No video games/phones, etc.). This must be a stuffed animal, doll, action figure or something similar. Describe it in as much detail as you can, give some background for it and explain why you love(d) it so much.

What makes a toy memorable?

Turn to pg. 74 in your SB book.

Today, we will be viewing a clip from the movie Toy Story

1. As someone in your class summarizes some of the events that happen in Toy Story, take notes below or write what you already know about this film.

Toy Story is about Woody, who is Andy's favorite toy as well as the leader of all the toys in Andy's bedroom.

Andy gets a newspaceman toy, Buzz Lightyear, for his birthday and things start to change for Woody now that Buzz is around.

Woody starts to get jealous, especially since all the other toys seem to admire Buzz more than they do Woody.

Because of Woody's jealousy, Buzz and Woody both end up in Sid's house, the boy next door who is known for torturing toys.

The two toys work together to save themselves and other toys.

Finally, Buzz and Woody are reunited with Andy just in the nick of time since Andy's family is moving to a new house.

2. After first viewing the scene, write words below that describe how Woody is probably feeling.

a. BEFORE the changes start happening

b. ONCE the changes start happening

c. AT THE END of the scene

3. After viewing the scene again, describe specific changes in Woody's world.

BEFORE Buzz's arrival...Andy jumps on the bed with Woody, has Woody's posters on his wall and pictures he has drawings of Woody on his bulletin board. He has a Woody bedspread and wears a Woody shirt.

AFTER Buzz's arrival...Andy uses Buzz to shoot at Woody and even kicks Woody across the floor.

He replaces his Woody hat with a space helmet that looks like the one Buzz wears.

He replaces Woody's posters with Buzz posters.

He draws pictures of Buzz and replaces his Woody bedspread with a Buzz Lightyear one.

The other toys now go to Buzz for help and seem to ignore Woody.

Finally, Andy looks at his two toys, and decides to keep Buzz and put Woody away in a dark, lonely toybox.

List the words or lyrics you remember from the song in the scene.I'm on top of the world, I was livin' the life, things were just the way they should be.When from out of the sky comes some new punk in a rocket. When all of a sudden some strange things are happening to me. I had lots of friends...now all my friends are gone. I'm doin' the best I can to carry on. I had power, I was respected. Strange things are happenin' to me - ain't no doubt about it.

How is Woody dealing with the changes in his world?

Woody is upset about the changes in his world. He feels left out and lonely. His best friend, Andy, has selected another toy, Buzz, as his favorite.

Homework: Read your DEAR

novel

November 7, 2013 - Springboard 2.2 and 2.3A Toy's World and Changes in My World

Homework:Finish toy monologue...3 paragraphs of 5-7 sentences each paragraphObjective: Students will recognize elements of conflict and resolution Warm Up (in your composition book)Date your notes, write down the objectiveIn SB, turn to pg. 77Complete the Changes in My World checklist by putting a beside any of the events that have occurred in your life during the past three years.

Changes in my world

One of the elements that is often a part of change is conflict, a problem, obstacle or struggle.

external conflict - a conflict that occurs between people or characters, such as the conflict between Woody and Buzz as they compete for popularity with the other toys.

internal conflict - a conflict that occurs within the character or person, such as the conflict that occurs when someone is torn between two choices, like when Woody has to decide how to handle the way his friends admire Buzz.

From your list, choose one of the changes in your life that involved some kind of conflict. Then answer the questions...

a. What conflict was involved in the change. In other words, what problem or obstacle did you face?

b. How was the conflict resolved? How did you work out the problem or overcome the obstacle?

When Buzz first arrives, Woody feels rejected and worried that Andy won't love him anymore. Something similar happened to Jessie in Toy Story 2...

What conflict did Jessie face?

What kind of conflict was this? Justify your answer.

How was the conflict resolved?

So now, think about the toy that you wrote about yesterday...What would this toy say if it could talk???

Quickwrite (pg. 76)

a. Choose one of the toys from your list and imagine that it could actually talk, just like Woody. Write its name or give it one. Pretend you are the toy, so write it in first person point of view using "I."

b. If the toy could talk, write what it would say about the time it spent before it came to you. It could have been in a toy store, with another person, or in any other place.

c. What would the toy say when it first came to you?

d. What would the toy say today? Make clear whether or not you still play with the toy. What has happened to it?

e. What would the toy say about the changes that it has seen in your world? Keep speaking as the toy, continuing to use "I."

Now you will write a monologue (the part in a drama when an actor speaks alone) in which your toy talks about his / her situation. Think about Jessie's song and the scene where we see her growing more and more distant from Emily.

What would YOUR toy say?

Your toy's monologue should be 3 paragraphs (each paragraph should be at least 5-7 sentences long)

1st paragraphDescribe yourself (you ARE the toy) and talk about how you came to your owner.

2nd paragraphDescribe the fun times you used to have with your owner. How did your owner play with you? What were your favorite times together?

3rd paragraph What is your life like now? What changes have you see take place in your owner's world? How has your relationship changed with your owner? How does this make you feel?
