Post on 20-May-2020
What a beautiful fall we’ve
had so far! It seems like years
since I’ve seen the leaves hang on
this well and we’ve had better than
average weather for the harvest too.
I don’t know if it has been because
I’ve been enjoying fall so much or
that I’ve been too busy to notice
how fast the school year is going,
but I was surprised to look up from
my desk the other week and notice
that we had started the 2nd quarter.
October is especially busy with
games, parent teacher conferences,
conference events and homecoming
so it seemed like we’ve reached the
end of the month in the blink of an
eye. A big part of the excitement
for activities has been the success
of the football team. The Twin
Loup Wolves had their first unde-
feated regular season and I look
forward to watching their progress
through the playoffs!
In addition to attending sports
practices many of our students have
also had a busy fall with other ac-
tivities. Ms. Simmons and the
Cast/Crew have been working on
this year’s One Act play,
"Campsite Chaos" and will be
performing at competitions as well
as performances in our community.
Sargent gets the honor of hosting
the Mid Nebraska Activity Confer-
ence One Act contest on November
22nd. It promises to be a full day
and I invite the community to share
it with us by coming to attend.
Because of everything it takes to
put on the Conference One Act
contest we will not be having High
School classes that day, but ele-
mentary classes will go on as
scheduled. The choir also had an
eventful month by getting ready for
and attending the conference vocal
clinic last Monday and was part of
the Eastern MNAC Conference Con-
cert that night. I thought the group
sounded great and am proud of
the Sargent Students that attended.
The FFA members finished up range
judging and have been transitioning
back to the classroom and green-
house this past month. A big project
FFA members are working on is the
Fruit Sales. If you would like to
order Fruit through the FFA and
haven’t been asked please contact
Mr. Kozeal and he can arrange for a
member to meet with you. Fruit
sales will be ending soon so don’t
wait!
Another thing that captures my
attention in the Fall is the release of
information from last year’s NeSA
assessments. Parts of the report
were released by the Nebraska De-
partment of Education in September
and most of the remaining infor-
mation was made available this past
month. There is no longer an offi-
cial “State of the Schools Report”,
but I invite you to check out Com-
missioner Blomstedt’s comments
and the AQUESTT link to see the
information for yourself. It can be
found on the Nebraska Department
of Education’s homepage at:
http://www.education.ne.gov/ .
AQUESTT is the new format NDE
is using to display school progress.
Overall our School results were
better than last year’s. The High
School did very well on the ACT
and the 7, 8, and 11 grade NESA
tests scores showed improved in
almost every area. The Elementary
NeSA scores were down from previ-
ous years. But when I started break-
ing down class progress we did have
several groups and individuals that
did well. Individual NeSA results
were sent home at Parent Teacher
conferences and if you have any trou-
ble interpreting the information don’t
hesitate to ask.
Besides individual NeSA results be-
ing sent home last month the 1st quar-
ter report cards, and school pictures
were sent home with students on Fri-
day the 21st. You’ll find the 7-12
grade 1st quarter honor roll students
listed in this newsletter. If you have
questions, about your student’s grades
or our school’s performance on the
Nebraska State Assessments, please
give me a call!
I will close by saying that I am
proud of the school I work in and
community where I live! We aren’t
perfect, but perfection is something
everyone should strive for.
Thank you and until next month –
GO WOLVES!
Mr. Cory Grint

STEM Career Day a Success Four students, Daymion Collins, Tyler Detter, Raymond Divine, Dillan Saner, and Mrs. Schauda ventured to Broken Bow on September
30th to explore career opportunities in Custer County in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Manufacturing. They began
their day at Mid Plains Community College with introductions and instruction on the order of tours for the day.
The first tour was at Custer Public Power where they worked on building a series circuit and parallel circuit. Then they toured the build-
ing and learned about the various jobs it takes to be able to have a consistent flow of electricity to homes and businesses. There were
bookkeepers, computer technicians, engineers, linemen, human relations personel, education directors, and several other occupations that
help CCPP run smoothly. Next, they moved to a safety demonstration where they watched how damaging electricity can be if not han-
dled correctly and how to safely move away from downed power lines. The big finale was getting to practice using some of a lineman’s
equipment. Several of the students practiced using a “hot stick” to open and close a circuit to stop or start the flow of electricity. A cou-
ple of the students also put on a lineman’s belt along with other equipment and practiced climbing an electrical pole.
The next stop was at BD. The students broke up into groups for a tour of the plant and were able to see all the innovative technology
that helps the company produce 10 million tubes in a day. They also heard about the wide range of degrees employees have. There are
mechanical technicians, chemists, engineers, accountants, human relations, managers, just to mention a few. After the tour they were
served pizza for lunch and were able to listen to a Central Community College representative that talked about the mechatronics program
at CCC. Jon Nixon, a process engineer at BD, also talked to the students about internships and scholarship opportunities available at
BD.
The students’ final business tour was at Sargent Pipe. Luke Wasson, the general manager, gave an interesting tour and explained how
technology helped make their machining processes more efficient so they can produce a more uniform product and produce more well
parts in less time. Not only did the students get to watch parts being made, one of the technicians programmed a machine to make tops
for all the students that toured that day. They managed to squeeze in a top spinning contest before the tour was over. Engineers have
also been able to design a well drilling truck on a computer program instead of on graph paper which allowed them to save time and re-
sources when the truck was actually built. Luke also was quick to tell the students about the many opportunities in various career fields
such as engineering, welding, and computer programming that are available at Sargent Pipe.
The career day ended back at Mid-Plains Community College where the stu-
dents were encouraged to consider career opportunities they have available to
them right here in Custer County. They also got a quick glimpse at the new
welding booths that are being installed at the campus in Broken Bow. The
students should be anxiously awaiting college courses they can take in the
welding technology field.
Students were asked what their favorite part about the day was and why:
Tyler Detter – “My favorite part about the day was the tours because I got to
gain a lot of knowledge.”
Dillan Saner – “My favorite part of the day was the BD tour because I got to
see where my dad works.”
Daymion Collins – “My favorite part was at Sargent Pipe where we got to see
the parts being made.”
Raymond Divine – “My favorite part was when we were at Custer Public Power and we got to climb the utility poles.”

Nebraska Construction Career Day (NECCD) hosted at Mid Plains Community College
in North Platte! Six Sargent students along with 140 other students from the western part of the state attended a construction ca-
reer day on September 29th at Mid Plains Community College in North Platte. There have been 6 construction
career days hosted at various community colleges across the state this fall. The days have been sponsored by
many businesses that want to promote careers in construction and jobs pertaining to the construction field.
The students registered online previous to the event and could choose some career areas that interested them.
Based on those interests the NECCD had a lot of hands on activities that engaged the students. The students
were given opportunities to pour cement in a form, place mortar and lay bricks, shingle a small roof, build a sim-
ple wood project, and learn about wiring a house. They also had the chance to drive a skid steer and excavator,
drive a truck simulator, align car tires, learn how to tig weld, and bronze some copper piping in the HVAC depart-
ment.
The day was filled with hands on activities and exposed the students to the many opportunities in the construction
field. The students came home with new knowledge about the construction industry and the many job opportuni-
ties it holds. Here are some comments about the day from the students who attended:
Colten Brown – “I liked running the heavy equipment and I learned how to pour cement.”
Alex Horky – “National Guard had a lot of cool stuff and I learned how to tig weld.”
Tyler Detter – “I liked the HVAC the most and the Home Design the least.”
Raymond Divine – “I liked the National Guard and driving the skid steer.”
Dylan Osborn – “I liked the HVAC, Electrical, and Floor Plan Design. I learned that students in their construc-
tion department build a house every year to be auctioned off.”
Dillan Saner – “My favorite programs were HVAC and Welding. Also, pouring cement is so much work and it is
hard to get it nice.”

Apply to your top college choices
If you attend one of over 200 Nebraska high schools holding an Apply2College event, you’ll get help with your applications. If not,
no worries…Here are steps you should take to apply. You’ll also find a college application checklist listing everything you need.
Retake the ACT and/or SAT. Colleges use your best scores for college admission and scholarships.
Juniors…start researching colleges If you narrow your college choices by the end of your junior year, your senior year will be less stressful. Here’s how to get started:
Review College Profiles at EducationQuest.org for information about colleges in Nebraska and across the country. If you’re
interested in an out-of-state school, check out the Midwest Student Exchange Program to learn about tuition discounts.
Meet with college representatives who visit your school, and then visit the websites of the colleges that interest you to learn
more about the schools.
Once you’ve narrowed your choices, schedule campus visits. Try to visit in the spr ing of your junior year while colleges are
still in session.
For more tips, see the Selecting a College section at EducationQuest.org.

Counselor Notes
College visits are important. I realize you can’t visit as many as students would like. They do need to visit at least
two of their top choices so they can compare them to help find the right fit for them. I will gladly help them set
up college visits after you have discussed times and dates that work for both of you.
Listed below are some websites and information on scholarships. Students can look for scholarships now and I
have listed some sites for you below. My website is also listed there; it will have a lot more information on local
scholarships that will come due second semester. If you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call
or stop by.
Mrs. Schauda
The seniors and rest of the student body have access to test dates, scholarships and other information through our
new classroom management system, Schoology. If a parent would like access they should contact Mrs. Schauda.

BOOK FAIR
The Book Fair this year was a huge success. Thank-you to everyone who came out to support the fair. It is great to see the many caring and involved parents in the Sargent School District who come in to make sure their chil-dren have an exciting new book to read, and also to see so many parents and grand-parents donate books to classrooms! Parents in this district are very aware of what level their children are reading, and they would shop according to that level. The Book Fair is a great service provided by our school and the parents make it a success. The fair makes it possible for our library to receive new books through Scholastic. Thanks everyone who came in and made it fun! See you next year!
