T oday we end the Christmas cele- bration with the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. The Christmas season ends not with a child, but with Jesus as an adult at the Jordan river. People are wondering whether John might be the messiah, but he points to one who
would come after him. The gospel today ends with Jesus being baptized and the sky opens up, so God can declare Jesus as his son. So, if we had any doubts, Jesus is the one. So, what does our baptism mean? It is a sign that God is with us. That through good and bad our God chooses to walk with us. This is the Christmas theme, Emmanuel, God is with us and this is our life theme. School and Religious Education is back in session and shortly we will be celebrating first recon-ciliation with the children who will be receiving First Communion in the spring. The sacrament of Recon-ciliation reminds us of the need of reconciliation in our daily lives. None of us are perfect and sometimes intentionally or unintentionally we hurt others and we need to be big enough to say we are sorry. I always remember the movie “Love Story”. In it we heard the phrase love means never having to say we are sorry. Well that is just dumb. Love means saying we are sorry and asking forgiveness over and over as we need it. Please pray for the children as them prepare for reconciliation. This week is the week to once again apply for Tax credit scholarships from the state of Illinois. For
Tax credit scholarships from the state of Illinois. For Tax credit scholarships from the state of Illinois. For those who received the scholarships last year, con-gratulations and you know the process. For those who may be considering private education for the first time, I encourage you to call the St. Agnes school office on Monday for information and help. Sign up for the scholarship is January 15th and it is a first come first serve basis. Good Luck to everyone applying and thanks to the Governor, State Senators, and State Representatives for supporting this scholarship. If you graduated from St. Agnes Catholic School and are 21 years old or older we are inviting you to a school reunion. The reunion will be held on Saturday February 9, 2019. We invite everyone to 5:00 PM mass at St. Agnes that evening and them we are heading to Chuck’s Tavern in Crete to continue the celebration. Call your classmates and bring your spouses and catch up on over 100 years of St. Agnes school. Finally, this bulletin is one of the first that is somewhat on a timely fashion after the holiday I would like to thank everyone who have made our liturgies at St. Agnes and St. Kieran so meaningful over the Christmas season. It looks easy, but many people give lots of time to make everything so nice. I also want to thank everyone who generously supported the parishes of the holidays and finally thanks for all the gifts that Fr. O’Mara, Fr. Tom, and I received over Christmas. As much as we try, sometimes we miss a thank you. So, Thank You.

MASS INTENTIONS FOR HOLIDAYS AND HOLY DAYS In the past (before 2010) parishioners were allowed only three Mass Intention requests over a calendar year. This policy was changed in mid-2010, allowing our parishioners unlimited access to requesting Mass Intentions. The change in policy has benefited both the church and the parishio-ners over the years. However, the Rectory Office has experienced several problems in accepting Mass Intentions for holidays and holy days over that time. St. Kieran allows no more than four Mass Intentions for each weekend Mass; this is based on the number of priests we have serving St. Kieran. Sometimes, of course, people have one Mass Intention for more than one person (husband and wife, grandmother and grandfather, etc.); we limit this to three names. Parishioners are sometimes very disappointed when they cannot get a Mass Intention for holidays or holy days such as Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Easter, etc. Mass Intentions for these days fill up quickly, sometimes a full year in advance. It is not only disappointing for parishioners, but Rectory Office personnel frequently deal with irate parishioners and what that entails. In talking to the Pastoral Staff regarding this problem, it was decided that on major holidays and holy days, St. Kieran will no longer take individual requests for Mass Intentions. Masses on those days will be “For the parishioners of St. Kieran Church.” If a Mass Intention is already on the Mass Book for this Liturgical Year (December 2, 2018, to November 24, 2019) the Mass Intention will still be honored. As of January 13, 2019, we will take no new individual Mass Intentions for the following holidays or holy days: New Years’ Day (January 01,) Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion (beginning of Holy Week,) Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday,) Easter Vigil or Easter Sunday, Mothers’ Day (May,) Fathers’ Day (June,) All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2). Please make note of this when requesting Masses for 2019 and when the 2020 Mass Book officia-lly opens in June of 2019.

Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America. For many in Latin America and the Caribbean, a rising secular culture, difficult rural terrain, and a shortage of ministers present obstacles to practicing the faith. Your support to the collection provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, and other programs to share our faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ. To learn more about how you can make a diffe-rence, please visit www.usccb.org/latin-america.
