Editorial

Over the last few years footy fans will have noticed an amazing

explosion in the number of performance indicators flashing on

and off the bottom of the screen. Forget the scoreboard, to win,

your team has to have more contested possessions, more tack-

les and a higher efficiency (fewer turnovers). Although the game

has changed, I don‘t think that there is anything new in these

stats. My under 16s coach‘s half-time address always ended with,

―Go in hard (win the contested footy), chase hard (tackle) and

don‘t waste the footy (use it efficiently)‖.

While these stats don‘t necessary give us new insights into the

game, I think they are useful in breaking the game down into

small pieces that can be used to identify where games are being

won and what teams need to work on. So here‘s something to

think about in the car on the way to you next fishing trip. If you

were in charge of inventing flyfishing performance indicators,

what would they be?

If flyfishing was a spectator sport to rival Friday night footy,

these would be my performance indicators — percentage of

time the fly is in/on the water, percentage of time the fly is in

the ‗strike zone‘, kilometers of water covered, percentage of flies

refused, number of fish overlooked and number of fish

spooked. To collect this information, channel 7 would have to

do better than ‗roof cam‘ (remote controlled camera suspended

on wires from the roof of Docklands). That‘s the thing about

Mount Beauty Trip (the big soak)

Six members, two with their wives ventured up to Mt Beauty on the Labour Day weekend and what a wet trip this turned out to be. When we arrived on Friday afternoon the river was clear and at a perfect height. I travelled up with Ian Lowe and after setting up camp was joined by Russ Henry. We headed up to the diver-sion tunnel where we found the river running well and the rocks very slippery. In fact all three of us took a dive at some stage in the afternoon. Ian easily won the diving competition with 4. This included a spectacu-lar effort off a log, (sort of a backflip with a couple of twists but no pike or even trout for that matter) on the return to the car. Russ and I really thought he‘d hurt himself but he bounced back up pretty well. We all managed to catch several fish which was a good start to the trip.

That night it rained steadily but had cleared by morning. The river was still flowing clear as the rain had been nice and steady rather than a torrent so the ground had time to soak it up. That morning we caught up with Bill and Margaret Ogilvie and John Kruska. We all fished down behind the race course, with John and Bill heading up stream, and Russ, Ian and myself going for a walk downstream to fish our way back to the car. Bill managed a nice fish and I was lucky enough to catch a well conditioned brown of 42cm on a sunken willow grub pattern. The Kiewa is such a fantastic looking bit of water but should hold a much big-ger head of fish.

On Saturday afternoon we all (wives included) went for a drive up to Rocky Valley Dam at Fall‘s Creek. John Kruska had his port-a-boat and I had my float tube. John gave Peter and Marg Cogdon a run down on the port-a-boat as they were interested in possibly taking one on their big trip up north. John towed me in the float tube across the other side of the lake which saved my legs but just about pulled my arms off. The sky was clear but there were threatening clouds on the horizon. We later learned that parts of Melbourne had been hit by a severe storm with hail stones up to the size of cricket balls, which caused a lot of damage. The fishing was tough, but I did manage to catch a 35cm brown just before knock-off time.

That night we were just settling down with a glass of red outside Pete and Marg‘s camper when the rain came back with a vengeance, and persisted all night. It had eased off a bit by morning so we decided to take 3 vehicles into PSS (Pete‘s secret spot). This entailed an hours 4WD trip, with increasingly heavy rain once more. By the time we got in there it was really pouring and the river was unfishable for fly anglers. It did not stop a couple of young guys spin fishing in their shorts and tee shirts however. After a 10 min stay we made the drive out.

At a fork in the track John K informed us he was heading back to Melb. as the weather was looking

ordinary. Sunday afternoon Ian and I fished the lower Kiewa again. The river was starting to rise and

although still clear was taking on a decidedly grey look. It was not until Ian tried to make his first cast

that he realised that his rod was broken. We worked out that the fall off the log as described earlier

was when it was broken, as this had been the first time since then he had used that rod.

The rain continued for the rest of the day and all night. That night, Local Mount Beauty resident and former member Doug Braidwood visited us and it was great to catch-up with him for an hour or so. Although the weather had cleared, leaving for home was not too traumatic this time as by now the river was a raging tor-rent of dirty water and totally unfishable.

Driving home, it was amazing to see so much water in the paddocks with many farmer‘s dams full or over-flowing. Put this one on your calendar for next year. The weather couldn‘t be that bad 2 years running!

Casting Scene

The Cock of the Walk casting comp was held on a warm but windy Sunday the 28th March. After a long day it was Ken Lucas from Sunshine taking out the trophy in a cast off with John Kruska after the final was ini-tially drawn between the two of them. The Northern contingent looked the goods in our new casting team shirts.

2010 President’s Shield

This event was run in conjunction with the Cock of the Walk tournament. It was great to see a few of our newer members and juniors having a go and all gave a good account of themselves. The scores from the first round of the Cock of the Walk counted as the score for the President‘s Shield. Congratulations to John Kruska on winning the President‘s Shield this year by 2 points from Leff Andropof.

Northern Open

We are hosting our own casting competition on Sunday the 18th April. The Northern Open is open to all casters and is held over 4 events. The dry fly, A.C.F skish, I.C.F. skish and the wet fly.

A feature of all the Opens is that as well as having a Champion for each event there is also a handicap win-ner. Just put down what score you think you will cast for each event. A formula is then applied to adjust your score and you‘re in with a chance. Anybody, including first-timers can be a winner. There is no doubt in my mind that casting in competitions does help you when you go fishing. Give it a go. We will be holding a BBQ at this event. Please let me know if you can help with manning the BBQ.

April Trips

We have 3 trips in April on our syllabus this year which is full on. April is a great time to go fishing as the weather is cooler and the fish are looking at putting on as much condition pre-spawning.

Day Trip on the Maribrynong River, April 17

The destination is Jensen reserve off Farnsworth Ave. The meeting time is in the reserve car park is 7 am onwards and it might be an idea to bring some bread and bread flies if the Bream are not on the job. Trip Captain: Jason Cooney 0418 915 279.

Long Weekend Trip to Barwon Heads, April 24-26:

Most Barwon Heads camp sites are booked out but there are plenty of sites still available at the Ocean Grove holiday park (PH: 5256 2233). We have booked a cabin and there are still over 30 available (they don't realise that we now get the long weekend) Get in now before everyone else clues on! Salmon and bream are on the hit list for this destination with orange and/or chartreuse clousers are handy.

Film Night

It seems like we have been advertising this night for a long time but we will be holding another film night on Thursday the 29th April starting at 7.30pm sharp. The program is being kept under wraps at the moment but will feature a couple of good films. The movies will be shown on the big screen (wall of the archery range). Entry is free.

Supper will be available at intermission for a small cost. Chris Baty of Compleat Angler has kindly donated a fly line to raffle on the night Tickets are $5 each. Promises to be another great night.

Upper-Goulburn trip report

When the much anticipated upper king river 4WD trip was cancelled in the last minutes due to so

many unforseen reasons it was time to head up to the upper Goulburn for the weekend. As a novice

fly fishermen and a virgin camper, I didn‘t know what to take with me or how many flies I would

need. Nonetheless I got my self a 4Wt 8‘ rod the day before in addition to my 6Wt rod and hoped that

I would be set for the big weekend. Glen and I left Melbourne at 3pm on Friday and met up with Ian

and Phillip who had camped in the Skipworth reserve just before Kevington.

When we arrived at the camp site Ian and Phillip had set up their camp and gone to the river for an

afternoon fishing session close to the camp site. As we pulled in Phillip was returning from the river

looking disappointed. ―The river is very dirty‖, he said. Phillip hadn‘t caught any fish, but had seen

some following his fly. Ian returned soon after and he and Philip went for a drive further up the river

to assess the conditions.

After setting up Glen‘s camper it was time to get a bit of

fishing done for ourselves. We headed up the river pass-

ing Ian‘s car which was parked next to a part of a river

that receives gin clean water. When I saw that, I said to

myself, ‗bugger‘, they got into a great place of the river. I

strongly believed the expression on Glen‘s face most

probably echoed the same thoughts. We pulled in a

place where Glen had fished before Christmas. After a

bit of advice from Glen on what flies to use and how it

should be used, it was time for me to christen my new

rod, reel, line and some horrible looking flies I tied some

time back. It was easy to get into the river and started

our own thing fishing parallel to each other covering the

whole river. Glen over took me when I tangled my line.

It was getting pretty dark at the time and visibility was

really bad. To my surprise I hooked up a little rainbow,

in my 3rd cast right next to a log in the river and even

more surprised when I saw the fish has taken my horri-

ble looking dry fly. It was nothing fancy, size 16 Para

Adams with a grey body and brown hackle on it. I struggled so bad to remove the hook off that fish.

After about half and hour it started bucketing down, and the rain saw us return to the camp site. It

was a quiet night at the camp site. Only a few bottles of beer and couple of bottles of wine were con-

sumed.

Just after midnight on the Friday night I was awoken by a commotion in the camp. The music was

pumping from an old Ford divivan that saw the arrival of a new group of guests to the site. Our new

arrivals were screeching in colourful language, arguing and threatening each other. I realized we were

going to have some interesting neighbours for the weekend. They were obviously intoxicated when

they rocked-up, and it didn‘t take much to prove my hypothesis when I saw the man with a beer in his

hand at dawn. Ian had been listening to their conversations and thanked god that no body was

stabbed in the chest with a knife during the night, after his Mrs. had threatened to kill the beer drink-

ing group. We had better things to do on Saturday morning, so we headed-out after brekky. I again

paired up with Glen; Ian and Phillip went their own way passing us upstream. Glen got the first fish

soon after we jumped in the river and it was quiet until the sun came out. We then fished a nice

stretch of water and ended-up catching 10 between us, (I only got 4, most on nymphs). There was a

double hook up at one stage, when I was working my butt off for a fish that I saw behind a rock. I

ended up getting him after 2 attempts as Glen hooked up a little further upstream from me. As we

planned to get back to the camp around6 1pm for lunch we jumped back in the car. In that afternoon,

we were on a bit of an exploration and headed into the woods, following the army trek just after

Knockwood. After driving for a bit we couldn‘t decide what to do because even though we headed up

-stream, the river was still dirty. Our other option was to go down and fish the Jamieson, which was

very clear. In the end, since we were already there, me and Ian grouped-up and started fishing the river

from downstream. The plan was to catch-up at the point where Glen parked his car. Glen and Phillip

started fishing up from there. The river wasn‘t any better, but I managed to hook two rainbows on my

dry again. One pool was too deep and big for us to wade through, so we had to leave the river and

walk-up the track back to the car. When we met up with Glen and Phillip, only Glen had two fish for

the arvo on the nymph and Phillip and Ian were fishless.

Saturday night was very fresh, so Phillip got the fire going. Again we sunk a few vino‘s and had a chat

around the fire. Sunday morning came and we were all hoping the fishing would improve. As the river

showed no signs of clearing-up, Ian and Phillip headed to Gaffneys creek where the water was clear.

Glen and I went back to the same place we fished on Friday. In that session, after the sun came-up,

Glen got the biggest trout for the weekend and I ended up with two and dropped two as I decided to

fish barbless. I lost my favourite nymph to a tree, adding more frustration to my bag. At around 1pm,

we called it a day and headed back to the camp to have some lunch and pack-up. Glen and I said our

good-byes, leaving good old Skipworth reserve behind.

Here is what I really thought about it: I enjoyed every single minute of it, even though the fishing was

a little tough. It was a privilege to head out with these great fly fishermen. Thank you to all for their

advice, hospitality, and encouragement. And what did I really learn? How much Glen hates the Euro-

pean wasps and how good a dancer Ian is at dancing! Until next time tight lines gentlemen!

Timber-lake take 2

Once again back in February there was a trip organised through Northern and the Fly Life forum to fish for Murray Cod at Timberlake. I had been looking forward to this trip all year, but was getting a little disheartened by the weatherman as the weekend crept closer. Although it looked like Mother Na-ture was stacking it against us with forecasts of rain and low pressure systems, the Cod did not seem to care and were definitely on the job all weekend. It was great to be able to get up into the timber this year with the higher water levels allowing access to the snag riddled ―scary‖ water. Often it was down to hand-to-hand combat to try and stop these brutes from busting us off - and they often did in the sunken timber. Everybody got a fish (I think) and we estimate there were around 100 Cod caught throughout the weekend. They were taking on top and down deep, in the timber and in the open wa-ter with a few landed up around the 80cm mark. There seemed to be fish anywhere! The high lights for me were watching Warrnambool local, Hafey Rock do battle with his 76cm "tour guide" that took

him all around his haunts. Alex "landing" his first (he got cleaned up a few times before that) and get-ting the chance to cast to a large cod polaroided from the dam wall that was laying right at the banks edge. I ended up spooking it but what a thrill just to be able to sight cast to a Murray cod in water just deep enough to cover its back. Catching Cod here has given me the confidence and knowledge to chase Goodoo elsewhere. Well done to Rob Meade and Andrew Connell for organising this trip once again. I can‘t wait till next year.

Jeremy and Matt made a backpacking trip to New Zealand‘s South Island at the beginning of March. Rivers fished included the Mataura, Oreti, Whitestone, Mararoa, Eglington, Aparima, Waiau, Pomahaka and Mary Burn. The fishing was pretty slow with river levels low, hot temperatures and easily spooked fish feeding sub-surface. The boys made a good fist of it and in between feeding and drinking sessions managed to come up with some good fish.

Bass are back in Gippsland

Fisheries Victoria is pleased to announce the return

of Australian bass stocking to Blue Rock Dam and

Lake Glenmaggie. The elusive bass were once

stocked extensively throughout the area, however in

recent years numbers have begun to drop away as

r e l i a b l e s u p p l i e s b e c a m e s c a r c e .

The release of 50,000 Australian bass into the two

waters signals the successful return of the stocking

program to Gippsland and a return to full scale

stocking in the not too distant future.

Once the broodstock were collected in the wild, a

genetic study was conducted to determine if the

broodstock were of Gippsland bass genetic strain

and not hybrid fish with estuary perch. This will en-

sure that the stocked fish will not impact upon local

wild populations. Australian bass were last stocked

into Lake Glenmaggie and Blue Rock Dam in the

summer of 2002-03. Issues associated with produc-

ing pure strain Gippsland Australian bass, fish health

incidents and production problems limited further

stocking in recent years. Stocking fish into these wa-

ters has been highly successful in the past with an-

glers recording catches of legal sized fish. Last year staff from Fisheries Victoria worked with the De-

partment of Sustainability and Environment and a number of expert local anglers to capture mature

Australian bass to restart the breeding program and its success has been marked by the release of the

50,000 bass. These waters were

given a priority listing for stocking

following consultation with anglers

at regional consultation meetings.

The bass stocking is expected to

directly improve local recreational

fishing opportunities and provide

an economic and tourism boost to

local economies and the surround-

ing communities. The program

forms part of the Victorian Gov-

ernment‘s $13.5 million commit-

ment to improve fishing opportu-

nities across Victoria through the Enhanced Recreational Fishing Program.

The Baited Breath is a simple yet effective fly that is a proven taker in estuaries and on the flats and can be tied in any colour. The Black Boss is a steel head fly that can be deadly on rainbows when fished deep. The inch worm can be used as a willow grub imitation or fished like a nymph to good effect. The Golden Shiner is part of the Thunder Creek series of Buck tail lures, a style of tying rather than a specific colour or pattern. They can catch a range of fish in both fresh and salt water.

Boyd went to North Island of NZ and fished around Rotarua. Heaps caught and his best was a 9 ½ lb lake trout. Lumos worked well at night too.

Peter Cogdon fished around Miena in Tasmania with a few others. Fishing was not very good until the last day when they finally fired up.

Glen spoke to Trif who fished lake Augusta in Tasmania and said that the fishing was good with 15-20 caught per day around 3-4 lb on dry flies. Glen also said that his boss‘s brother was in Pata-gonia last month taking 20 trout per day on fly from murky water. The best caught was a 20 lb rainbow.

Alex went with Ross and fished the upper Goulburn. They fished the edges as the water was a bit muddy and landed 4 trout.

General business:

Bunning‘s BBQ result was around $1000 Nett. With very special thanks to Greg Roberts for organis-ing it all and the others who volunteered on the day.
