Quite often I buy a whole chicken which can easily provide my family with three delicious meals and plenty of stock for freezing and making into soups and stews. These recipes are equally delicious with left over roast chicken, however I find poaching the bird keeps the meat moist. For a 2kg chicken (£7.40 from Beechdale Butchers)- place it in a large
saucepan and add 1 carrot, 1 onion (halved), 10 peppercorns and 2 bay leaves. Cover with water, bring the lidded pan to the boil and simmer for about 1hr 30 mins. Remove the chicken and cool. Drain the cooking liquid. This is great stock and can be frozen in plastic soup containers.
Then get all the meat off the bones and divide up for the recipes.

Readers are invited to what promises to be a fabulous night out - whilst helping a Nottinghamshire animal charity help vulnerable animals.Incredibly, ‘Elvis’ is due to perform at Lowdham Village Hall at 7pm on Saturday 15 June! Tickets are just £10 each including a light supper, with the audience invited to bring their own drinks. Contact Lorraine on 07530-023543 for tickets – the profits from which all help the charity.
Bargain-hunters meanwhile can enjoy browsing and getting something unique – again whilst helping the charity. Eve, the owner of Farnsfield Vintage Emporium, has kindly offered Animal Accident Rescue Unit space in her shop to fundraise. Good condition china, ornaments, books, curios are all welcome. In addition, unwanted display units or cases and tables are needed to display the goods. Can you help with either? If so, please contact Bernice on 01623-847225 (evenings and weekends), or via email at admin@aaru.org.uk.
All fundraising helps animals such as sweet cat, Bugsy who was rescued in a very poor state as a stray in late 2012. After dedicated care from Animal Accident Rescue Unit volunteers, he is feeling much better. Aged somewhere between 6 to 12 years old,
he is neutered, vaccinated, flea and worm treated, micro-chipped and litter-trained. As an FIV positive cat, he must live indoors but is still a truly lovely cat and deserves a chance as he makes a perfect companion to someone with a quieter home! To find out more about him, please ring 0115-920 5172 after 6.30pm or email admin@aaru.org.uk with your contact details and postcode. Please note this telephone number must not be used for any other enquiry including non emergency calls. For general information and all other matters, please call the charity’s lifeline number 0115-932 1555.

A Funeral Service With A DifferenceArnold resident Stacey Dawe has recently completed training to become an Independent Funeral Celebrant with the UK College of Celebrancy.
Said Stacey “In today’s society fewer people find themselves associated to a particular church yet many hold onto either
some form of spiritual or religious beliefs. When it comes to organising a funeral quite often only a religious service or more atheist style humanist service is offered, whereas an Independent Celebrant will tailor a funeral to respect the family’s wishes making it personal and meaningful to capture the true essence, personality and character of the loved one.
The most important part of the service is that each tribute is created individually and personalised for the person who has died. I spend a lot of time with the bereaved families prior to the funeral to learn as much as possible about their loved one and I actively encourage all those who wish to take part in the service to do so, by way of spoken, written or musical tribute, or alternatively families may like to participate simply by choosing appropriate music, readings or poems”.
Stacey says her service will truly celebrate the life of the person who has died, whilst at the same time sensitively acknowledging the grief of those left behind.
You can get further information from Stacey at:www.staceydawe.vp.web.co.uk Tel: 07818 650623 Email sd12@btinternet.com

Vernon Coaker MP Shows His Support For The ‘Keep Trade Local’ Campaign
Vernon Coaker Member of Parliament for Gedling
2A Parkyn Road, DaybrookNottingham NG5 6BG
Email: vernon.coaker.mp@parliament.ukTel: 0115 920 4224Fax: 0115 920 4500
Please get in touch if you think I can help
Vernon is passionate about keeping local businesses at the heart of our community and is delighted that the Federation of Small Businesses is reviving the ‘Keep Trade Local’ campaign. He recently had a productive meeting with Natalie Gasson (pictured below), the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Development Manager of the FSB, to discuss the campaign and find out what progress is being made.
The continued decline of the high street is putting businesses at risk. Through its Keep Trade Local campaign, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is encouraging businesses to work together to make their local high street the place to visit, and to make people understand that they must use the high street or face losing it for good.
The Federation of Small Businesses has said that a priority for small firms is parking. Here schemes such as the two hours free parking, introduced by Gedling Borough Council, make a real difference in keeping independent firms alive and Vernon wants to see more done to ensure that our high streets are vibrant and successful.
Whether it’s our local market, greengrocer or butcher it is important that we support our local stores so that our town centres can thrive. Please shop locally and support our local businesses.
The Federation of Small Business are also asking you to take photos of your favourite shops and shopkeepers and send them to Natalie Gasson, FSB Development Manager natalie.gasson@fsb.org.uk, to tell everyone how great your local shops are and why you like to shop there, and to tweet about them including #keeptradelocal.

John Palmer is a wills and probate executive at QualitySolicitors Yates & Co
will have peace of mind in knowing that these tasks will be undertaken by someone of your choosing.
If you do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place and later become mentally incapacitated, your husband, wife, children or other relatives may face long delays and considerable expense in applying to the Court of Protection to get access and take control of your finances.
Local firm QualitySolicitors Yates & Co have introduced a scheme to encourage local people to plan ahead by considering setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney.
Concerned by the general lack of awareness of this issue, we have put together a very special offer to help people with the documents and the complete registration process.
Present this advert to claim a full £50* discount against our usual costs.
Lasting Power of Attorney is not just for the elderly. We know that we should write a will, but few people are aware that they should also consider a Lasting Power of Attorney.
People sometimes take it for granted that they will be able to look after their own every day affairs and make decisions for themselves. Sadly the ability to do this often decreases as we grow older.
This could be for a number of reasons such as an accident, physical illness or the onset of a metal illness; all of which could result in you having difficulties in managing your day to day affairs. Lasting Powers of Attorney are designed to be recognised by banks, financial institutions, care homes and local authorities as well as tax and pensions authorities.
Although this is something that we do not like to think about, these difficulties can be overcome by the preparation of one document, a Lasting Power of Attorney. It is a serious and powerful document about which you will want straightforward and down to earth legal advice.
A Lasting Power of Attorney gives someone you trust, usually a relative or friend, the power and legal authority to act on your behalf in the event that you aren’t able to do so for yourself. There are safeguards to make sure your wishes are carried out and you
QualitySolicitors Yates & Co is authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, no. 56526.*(not available in conjunction with any other offers)

Hello, Members of the Arnold Local Area Forum have been very busy and hugely successful in delivering their individual projects. Just to mention a couple – the Science on Stage crew did an absolutely fantastic job on working with local schools and delivering a really enjoyable show titled “Little Blue” to a houseful audience at the Nottingham Royal Concert Hall. This work provides a unique opportunity for local children to learn a new skill and most importantly perform to an audience of 100’s – not many children would have that in their CV’s. Secondly, the Arnold Art society hold regular meetings at the Pondhills Community Centre, and I have been extremely impressed by the high artistic talents of their members who have created many fantastic pieces of art – do visit their website for more information – www.art4arnold.com.
As we move into the summer and hopefully warmer weather, we can look forward to a huge number of free events starting with the Arnold Carnival on 14th and 15th June at Arnot Hill Park. The ALAF team will be in the arts and crafts marquee and do come and chat to us about our work and how you can become more involved.
The next free event will be the AKRA Fun Day on the 29th June. This day is also the National Armed Forces day with the focus of the nation’s attention being on Nottingham which will host several events that are likely to be attended by a Member of the Royal family as well as Member of Parliament – please check the local media and council websites for further information that will be released closer to the date. The Arnold in Bloom team looks forward to hearing from budding gardeners who can enter their gardens in the annual competition.
New Writers UK, members of ALAF are in partnership with Gedling Borough Council staging Arnold’s first Book festival from 12th to 14th July in Arnot Hill Park and Gedling Civic Centre. Over the three days there will be a lively programme of free activities, workshops and talks from famous authors including: Karen Maitland, Helen Hollick, Alison Moore, Michael Cox, and Stephen Booth. This is definitely a “not to be missed” event. For further information, please contact Julie Malone on 07969 516158 or email Julie@newwritersuk.co.uk.
Finally, do take the initiative to volunteer and become involved in many of the local activities that will bring untold benefits to not only yourself but also local communities.
Carol Pepper, Chairman of ALAF

Reviving Old Memories
On Tuesday afternoon April 26th 2013, The Bonnington Theatre Arnold, presented a showing of the film Saturday Night and Sunday morning. Over Eighty Five People attended, selected on a first come first served basis. Its no exaggeration to say, that everyone enjoyed themselves immensely, renewing past friendships over a cup of tea and refreshments, whilst taking in and sharing the pleasurable social atmosphere of this unique occasion. 'Ay up Mi Duck' came not only from the mouth of Albert Finney the principal star of the film, but was heard more pronounced amongst the happy throng, vocalized as it was "in local Arnold dialect."
Local Churches that supported the event included: Kings Church Arnold; The Beacon Church Arnold, and Arnold Methodist Church. Residents of Milton Court Arnold and members of the Arnold History Group were also present. A voluntary collection made on the day, amounted to £66.14p and was presented at a later date to 'Churches Together' based in Daybrook.
Organizing such an event, gives an enormous amount of pleasure and satisfaction, and at the end of the afternoon’s entertainment, enthusiastic calls were made! "Can we do it again?" Yes we can, and it’s planned for late Summer or early Autumn. So, watch this space for further details. Councillor John M. Parr, Mapperley Plains Ward, Gedling Borough Council

New Women’s Writing Group
Ever thought ‘I could write that’ when you’ve read a book or poem? Yes?
Then our New Women’s Writing Group is just the place for you. A small group of women get together in the library Meeting Room from 2.30-4.00 on the last Thursday of the month. They share their thoughts and writing on a particular subject, that was decided at the previous meeting. Their philosophy is, if you can tell it, you can record it.
Someone’s words or experiences can trigger lots of memories, so they share them too!
They don’t write volumes, just a few paragraphs or a set number of words. The next meeting in June, has the theme ‘Picnics’ in 100 words.
Have a go yourself, then join them on 27/6/13 at 2,30 in Arnold Library Meeting Room.

If you are heading off on holiday it is really important to make your house appear occupied while you’re in sunnier climes.
Make sure you lock all of your doors and windows and use a burglar alarm.
Don’t leave valuables, including bags and keys, on view to tempt unwanted attention.
Ask relatives or trusted neighbours to bring in your rubbish bin, collect your mail and also keep an eye on your property.
Why not see if your neighbour wants to park on your driveway? If you do leave a car make sure it’s locked and nothing is left on display – including any cables.
But don’t forget about security when you return to your home.
With the weather warming up it’s tempting to fling the windows open and carry on with the housework or gardening but make sure you’re not leaving your home vulnerable to thieves.
If you decide to go out into the garden or upstairs, make sure you lock your doors – it only takes seconds for a thief to go into your house and steal your belongings.
Shed security is also important as the items in there can be
extremely valuable and yet easily accessible due to the flimsy wooden construction. The tools, if stolen, can also be used to break into your house.
Simple steps can help to put off potential thieves;
Fit a tough pad bar.• Fit strap hinges secured with • coach bolts.Chain items together or to a • ground anchor with a good quality chain.Make a note of serial numbers • and mark property. You can register your belongings on www.immobilise.comUse security lighting.• Fit a battery-operated alarm.•
In your shed, home and car, make sure that you don’t leave anything on display to tempt passers-by.
Register your belongings for free on www.immobilise.com so they can be traced more easily if the worst happens.
We have made some good arrests to reduce crime in the area but we need your help to keep your property safe.
If you have any information about crime in the area call us on 101.

Two young women from Woodthorpe have earned Girlguiding’s highest accolade – the Queen’s Guide Award. Jessica Attewell (20) and Sarah Millington (20) of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire were formally presented with their awards last week by Dee Miles, Deputy Chief Commissioner for Girlguiding’s Midlands region.
Jess and Sarah are former members of Woodthorpe Guides and Rangers. Jess is now Assistant Leader with 1st and 1st A Woodthorpe Guides whilst Sarah became a Young Leader with 2nd Woodthorpe Brownies before starting university and still helps out with the unit when her studies permit.
The Queen’s Guide Award is the most prestigious award open to members of Girlguiding’s Senior Section, who are all girls and young women aged 14-
26. Central to the scheme is a commitment to community projects and Jess and Sarah chose to support Operation Christmas Child by encouraging their units to collect shoe-boxes full of Christmas gifts for children in Africa and Eastern Europe. The pair then opted to work at a central warehouse to
check, sort and pack boxes prior to despatch.
Jess and Sarah also committed to developing their personal skills during the course of their Queen’s Guide work. Jess admits that her biggest challenge was learning to sew, whilst the toughest task for Sarah was staying in France with people she did not know and having to converse in French. In addition, the duo organised a trip to
Liverpool to explore the culture of the city, giving a presentation on their experience when they returned.

A Bitter End To The Season....
With the Season now finished, Arnold’s senior
teams can now reflect on a varied and eventful season.
The academy u19’s finished mid table as did the reserve side in their
respective league.
The first team had a disastrous first half of the campaign but, under new management, they turned things around despite a late in the season 10 point penalty to finish above the relegation places. A bitter end to the season though with the league deciding to relegate the team following an unsuccessful appeal to the FA at Wembley in May.
Plans are already being drawn up for next season and various Sponsorship opportunities will be outlined shortly.
Arnold boys Sunday under 10's team are currently looking for
players to strengthen their squad. Please contact the manager

Spring/Summer Update
Spring is sprung (at last) – time to get out and about with National Trust Nottingham Centre, a friendly organisation which offers a variety of activities. The winter programme ended on April 25th with a talk by Stuart Bramwell, an indomitable climber, on the mountains of the UK and Europe. His story of our mountain heritage was accompanied by some beautiful and dramatic photographs. Talks will start again in September. The summer months are packed with other activities – excursions to places as far afield as Sandringham and Beverley, Yorkshire, a selection of walks, and holidays in Kent and London. The Local and Family History Group offers its own extensive programme to such places as Nottingham Park Estate, and the 14th century Grantham House (a National Trust property). Some trips are shared with the Garden Interest Group, such as the visit to the St.Ann’s Allotments. The Gardeners are also off to the RHS Gardens at Harlow Carr, near Harrogate, one of the highlights of their summer programme. As an organisation affiliated to National Trust, the Nottingham Centre gives money annually towards amenities at Trust properties and the acquisition of new ones. Members were delighted to learn recently that the Trust has acquired Stoneywell, an Arts and Crafts style house near Bradgate Park in Leicestershire, and hope to visit it soon.To join the Nottingham Centre the fee is currently £5 and £4 for additional family members, but you must be a member of National Trust. SPICE Girl and stage sensation Melanie C is inviting wannabe specs wearing superstars in Nottinghamshire to compete for the Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2013 title and a holiday to St Lucia.
Melanie has teamed up with Specsavers and anti-bullying charity Kidscape to bring specs wearers into focus at the Oscars of the glasses world.
Janet Archer, store director at Specsavers in Hucknall, says: ‘We see so many people in the store who look absolutely amazing in their glasses. The Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition gives us the opportunity to prove that glasses are fabulous at any age by celebrating the specs wearers right on our doorstep who wear them with pride and plenty of style.’
To be in with a chance of meeting Melanie and scooping the biggest accolade in the specs-wearing world, male and female specs wearers can enter the competition online, www.specsavers.co.uk/loveglasses, via Facebook, www.facebook.com/specsavers, or at their nearest Specsavers store.
There are four age categories – 16-24; 25-39; 40-59 and 60+, plus a Facebook favourite voted for by the public. A winner from each category will win a VIP makeover and will attend the grand final in London, where the overall Spectacle Wearer of the Year will be announced.

Are you thriving... or surviving..?
Poor Self Esteem.. Lacking Self Belief.. Worn-out with Problems……. Sometimes, problems come and go. If we have strong personal foundations, and are resourced enough,
we are more likely to move on quickly. If we are lacking self-esteem or, we are dogged by unhappy experiences and limiting beliefs - perhaps from childhood experiences - we may not thrive as
easily. Parks Therapy (PICT) offers a unique experience which is comfortable and rapid offering thorough, and lasting change. Available at Nottingham Natural Health Centre, Carrington.

Nottingham & Derby Hot Air Balloon Club was started by a group of enthusiasts in 1978 and has been a regular sight around Notts and Derbys for 35 years. It is believed to be unique in the UK as the only balloon club with membership open to the general public. The club is a non-proft making sports club run by volunteers. Members get a chance to get involved in all aspects of flying balloons. No previous experience is needed as the club runs regular members training evenings and also other social events. We own two complete balloons and mainly fly locally from 6 different launch sites. In previous years members have attended balloon meets in the USA, India, France, Ireland and even Australia. In 2005 we flew our balloon across the English Channel for a charity event. In July 2011 we attended a meet at Chambley in France and helped set a new world record for the largest simultaneous launch of hot air balloons. The club’s balloon has been featured live on the BBC Breakfast Show and was also once used for an episode of the ITV drama Boon filmed in the grounds of Nottingham Castle. We sometimes get asked to inflate our balloons at local shows and fetes and also at wedding receptions. We are currently looking to recruit some extra members so we can fly more often. For enquiries about club membership telephone 0115 8541028.

Guided Walks Are Here Again
The 2013 edition of the Notts Guided Walks Programme is now being distributed round Nottinghamshire’s libraries, visitor centres, parks etc. It contains 159 short and medium guided walks, led by experienced ramblers and compiled from the programmes of the County’s leading walking clubs and organisations. This total includes many fascinating wildlife walks at Attenborough, the Idle Valley Nature Reserve, Wilwell and other well-loved sites.
For those new to walking or trying to regain their health, the programme also contains even more short ‘health walks’ with contact telephone numbers for 13 centres around the County.
The A5 booklet is free, as are most of the walks. If you cannot obtain one (and cash limits the number printed), you can find all the information on the partnership’s web-site at www.nottsguidedwalks.co.uk

Born and bred in Nottingham, the legend of Robin Hood has been part of my life and upbringing.
Arnold was once in the centre of Sherwood Forest. The forest stretched from the outskirts of Nottingham, starting where the Rock Cemetery (also known as Church Cemetry) is now. Hence the area nearby being called Forest Recreation Ground. The forest then went all the way north as far as York.
Arnold was off the main road in a clearing and isolated from the main passage of travellers on their way north. Legends abound of outlaws, footpads and highway men using the area. It is not unreasonable to think that our local hero would use this area as a base for his activities with the Major Oak (his hideout) only a short distance from Arnold.
Pubs in the area soon picked up on the connection and many were named after Robin Hood and members of his band. This was particularly so in Arnold; the Maid Marian, the Major Oak, The Arrow, The Longbow, the Friar Tuck and of course the Robin Hood and Little John. As befits the leader of the band and his trusty lieutenant, this is the oldest of the pubs recorded in Arnold that still exists. The earliest known records date from 1765 but the pub may be older than this. There is some evidence that an earlier building stood on the site. The name of this inn comes from one of the rhymes about the heroic pair;“You gentlemen and yeomen good, Come in and drink with Robin Hood.If Robin Hood be not at home,
Come in and drink with Little John!”
Over the years Little John has disappeared and then re-appeared in the pub name. Legend suggests that Little John came from Hathersage in Derbyshire so perhaps he went home for a visit every so often!
The cellars in the Robin Hood and Lilttle John, like those in a large number of old buildings in Arnold, are cut into the rock and once contained a Cock Pit. Cock
fighting was a very common sport in England from the middle ages and is still carried out in many parts of the world today. It was banned in England in 1835 and quite literally went underground with illegal fights taking place below the pub.
These fights involved the breaking of many laws including those relating to cock fighting, gambling and after hours drinking. All this criminal activity would have been going on underground while local officials were meeting upstairs, very much in the outlaw tradition. The Robin Hood and Little John was the centre of the old town. It was a coaching inn, a staging post for the journey north.Carriers collecting and delivering goods to the town would stop here. It was also the local bus stop, when horse busses were the only means of public transport. As well as visitors and coach passengers staying at the inn, local meetings, societies and functions were held there along with important events like elections and inquests. The pub was very much the social centre of the old town.
Robin Hood & Little John by Bob Massey
I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine.

FREE PAINT SCHEME
Nottinghamshire County Council run a Community RePaint scheme at Beeston, Calverton, Newark and Warsop Recycling Centres. Public donations of paint accepted at these sites are checked by the site staff and any tins that contain good quality reusable paint are put aside in a designated shelved paint cabin. This reusable paint is then given away free of charge, throughout the year, to community and voluntary groups registered on the scheme. The paint cabins are filling up well with reusable paint so we’re inviting groups to apply so that they can get their hands on some free paint. Over 100 groups have received around 12,000 litres of reusable paint so far but we’re always keen to help even more. For more information go to:

Reading CafeUnlike Knit & Natter, our Reading Café will be celebrating its 10th anniversary next year and preparations are already underway for a celebration party.
Every week on Wednesday morning, 10-12, a lively group meet to discuss books they have been reading, but anything else comes under discussion too!
The fact that this group have met for the past 10 years says a lot about the openness and friendliness of the people who meet.
On the second Wednesday of the month, we have a themed meeting, on subjects chosen by the Reading Café members, we have visiting speakers too. This is a free activity (50p for tea, coffee and biscuit), open to all-comers.
We look forward to your visit.
Knit & NatterVisit Arnold library on Monday afternoons and you will hear the sound of clicking and chatting!
You can track it down to The Gallery, where you will find our group of laughing, chatting knitters and stitchers.
From 2-3.30pm we host a knitting, stitching and crocheting session. Everyone is welcome, every skill is welcome and if you want to learn a new skill or improve your skills, then this is the place to be.A free activity, (tea, coffee and biscuit for 50p), we look forward to welcoming you.

Gedling Southbank FC, based in Gedling Borough have been awarded by Notts FA,Community Club status under the national Charter Standard system for well run clubs. This is the pinnacle award in the Charter Standard system and there are only 8 other clubs in Nottinghamshire who have achieved it.
They were given the award at a club dinner held in the Wheeler Suite at Notts County in November to celebrate the club’s achievements of 40 years in senior football and 20 years in junior football.
Since those days in 1972 when the very first team was formed the club have progressed steadily to where they are today providing the opportunity to play for one club from age 3 to 63!
The club currently run over 30 squads which includes 4 senior teams (including a Vets team), 4 girls squads aged 10 to 16, a section for players with disabilities in the 8 – 15 years range, separate development squads for both boys and girls aged 5 to 9, and boys teams for every age from age 7 through to 18. And not least our newest section for toddlers aged 2 upwards who can have a fun packed football themed
hour every Saturday morning in Lambley.
We have something for everyone and for every age! Players, volunteers, parents – anyone interested in joining a local friendly club please contact Ken Steele on 07785727298, or go to our website for further details about all our sections and contacts www.gedlingsouthbankfc.co.uk
