NextEd: an Ubun2.0 paradigm for technology enabled higher educationpresented at eLearning Africa (26-28 May 2010) Lusaka, Zambia (28May session 52 B1)http://www.elearning-africa.com/past_conferences.phpRosemary Quilling, University of KwaZulu-Natal, South AfricaCraig Blewett, UKZN, SATimothy Shea, University of Massachusetts, USADavid Lewis, UMass, USAPatrick Kanyiwamuyu, Daystar University, KenyaManoj Maharaj, UKZN, SAIntroductionThis research assumes that one way to address Africa’s challenges at a systemic level is to promote fundamental change and innovation within education. The challenge for African students and faculty is that we need to become globally competitive and locally aware. Emerging technologies and platforms (like Web2.0) appear to suggest mechanisms which may be able to facilitate this process. The challenge in education is multi-faceted as it concerns content, curriculum development, pedagogy, research and faculty development. Ideally an initiative would holistically attempt to address all these facets. This paper looks at the NextEd approach to addressing these issues in Higher Education and focuses on the lessons learned by the collaborating faculty from South Africa, America and Kenya.

: An Ubun2.0 Paradigm

for Technology-Enabled Higher Education

Today…

• NextEd • 2 collaborations• Lessons learned• The journey…

NextEd is a global, virtual educational network, built on anubuntu philosophy of collaboration and a scaffolded model of supportiveengagement.

NextEd Philosophy

Digital campfire – Ubun2.0– A place of no judgment – A place of no assumptions– Each has a reason for being there– Each is welcome– Each tells their story– Each learns– Each leaves to share

NextEd Assumption

Ubun2.0 Learning Happening

A place for imperfect learners, imperfect teachers,

with imperfect tools bound together by an important philosophy

NextEd Context

Lessons We Learned..

• Courses & Students• Requirements & Assessment• Participants

L1: Courses & Students

• Courses– Courses with common content?– Compartmentalised into topics?– Aligning timing of topic?

• Student academic level– Knowing your own & collaborator’s

L2: Requirements & Assessment

• Requirements being made of students– Multidisciplinary teams – Variety of Skills– Notional study hours available for collaboration

• Assessment– Modes of assessment: assignments? exams?– Grading norms ~ NB for initiator

• Equally difficult for initiator and collaborator to judge?!

L3: Participants

• Expectations? Students & Expectations? Students & FacultyFaculty

• Success requires motivated Success requires motivated participants…So what? …What’s participants…So what? …What’s in it for me?in it for me?

• ““Seeing is believing” Seeing is believing”

“THE” Lesson

• Not primarily about technology?!– Although there are challenges

• Not about money?!– Although funding delays did de-rail one

collaboration

• The engagement model is critical and the 5C model is flawed!

Model of Engagement

• Trust and motivation is NB • Exposure to NextEd is NB• From 5C …• …..to 6C

Connect

A journey…not a destination

• Reviewing the model as we move beyond step3/4 (Consume/ Collaborate)

• Involving more Ubun2.0 collaborators• Expanding to other disciplines
