Next Generation Wireless Technologies:

High throughput WiFi , WiMAX, and UWB

May 22-23, 2006

9am-4pm  This course on latest advances in wireless data networking is designed for engineers andmanagers involved in design and deployments of wireless equipment. In addition toproviding an overview of technology, issues, standards it also covers the technical details.After a brief introduction to WiFi (IEEE 802.11) technology, we discuss the technologicaldevelopments that enable high-speed IEEE 802.11n LANs. We present and comparedifferent proposals.

  The second part of the course is on broadband wireless access using WiMAX. Technical

developments that allow WiMAX to provide high-speed over a long distance are explained. The key features of various versions of IEEE 802.16 (802.16, 802.16a, 802.16d) are presented. The mobile broadband access 802.16e is also described. Again technology, industry status,and products are discussed. Ultra wide-band (UWB) technology for high-speed personalarea networks is covered in the third part. About the Instructor:Raj Jain is a Professor of Computer Science and

Engineering at Washington University, St. Louis, MO.He is also Co-founder and Chief Technology Officerof Nayna Networks, Inc - a next generationbroadband access equipment company in San Jose,CA. He was previously a Professor of Computer andInformation Sciences at Ohio State University inColumbus, Ohio.Dr. Jain is a Fellow of IEEE, a Fellow of ACM. He hasserved on the Board of Technical Advisors to severalcompanies including Nexabit Networks,Westborough, MA and Amber Networks, Fremont,CA.He is the author of ̀ `Art of Computer SystemsPerformance Analysis,’’ which won the ̀ `Best-Advanced How-to Book, Systems'' award fromComputer Press Association. His fourth book entitled " High-Performance TCP/IP: Concepts, Issuesand Solutions".Based on his active participation in the computerindustry, Dr. Jain was awarded 1999 siliconindiaLeadership Awards for Excellence and Promise in

Business and Technology.
