REPRESENTATIVES OF TURKEY MOST SUCCESSFUL AT
EUROPEAN SCHOOL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
The 6th European School Chess
Championship, which was held in Novi Sad,
Serbia from 20-28 June, 2013 was officially
closed in Master Center Hall of Novi Sad
Fair. The organizers provided a rich cultural
programme. During the prize giving
ceremony, the guests were welcomed, among
others, by Ms. Sava Stoisavljevic, Secretary General of the European Chess Union, on
behalf of the ECU President Silvio Danailov.

“The reasons of my pleasure for being here are double this time: as Secretary General
of the European Chess Union, I am very satisfied with the fact that the European
School Championship has passed in excellent conditions and exceptional
organisation, but, first of all, let me say that it makes me especially pleased and
honoured to know that the remarkable host of this event has been Novi Sad, the city
where I was born.” - said Ms. Stoisavljevic.
The Championship was officially closed by Member of the City Council for Sports
and Youth Predrag Svilar on behalf of the city of Novi Sad - patron of this chess
event.
This year 274 players from 13 national federations participated in this event, which is
the highest number in the history of this competition. Among them, 2 title holders
participated, 1 IM and 1 FM.

One more edition of European School Chess Championship was successfully ended,
with the help of the organizers, sponsors, and all the people who contributed to
making this tournament possible. We are proud to say that this year the city of Novi
Sad was an excellent host, and we hope that all the players and their companions had
a pleasant stay and enjoyed the tournament.

MOST MEDALS TO GEORGIA IN UREKI
European Youth Chess Cup successfully
ended in Ureki, a beautiful seaside town on
the Black Sea coast. Georgia, this year’s host,
took the most medals - 6 in total: 2 gold, 2
silver and 2 bronze. This year 258 children
from 10 national federations (ARM, AZE,
BUL, EST, GEO, LAT, LTU, RUS, SWE, UKR)
took part in the tournament.

The closing ceremony was attended by Ms. Sava Stoisavljevic, Secretary General of
the European Chess Union and Chief Arbiter of the Tournament, Mr. Levan Kipiani,
Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs of Georgia, Mr. Giorgi Giorgadze, President of
Georgian Chess Federation and Tournament Director, and famous Georgian
Grandmaster and Deputy of the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs of Georgia Mr.
Zurab Azmaiparashvili.
This year the organizers provided many nice awards for the participants and their
coaches. All the winners received valuable prizes: I-II place laptop computer, III
place photo camera, IV-V place mobile phone, and the coaches received money
prizes.

GM ERNESTO INARKIEV WINS THE RUSSIAN HIGHER LEAGUE
GM Ernesto Inarkiev won the Russian Higher
League with the final score of 6.5 points and
better tie-break than the second in the
ranking GM Ian Nepomniachtchi.
The bronze was taken by Alexander Motylev,
who scored 6 points out of 9.
The 66th Russian Higher League was held from 19-30 June, 2013 at the business
center “President” in Yekaterinburg.
The Championship was held in 9 rounds, according to the Swiss system with time
control 90 minutes for 40 moves + 30 minutes for the rest of the game + 30 seconds
increment per move, starting from move one.

First 5 chess players in the ranking qualified for the Russian Championship Super
Final which will be held in October. Fifty chess players took part in the competition.
Chief Arbiter was IA Kriukov M.B. Total prize fund in the men’s section was 58 300
EURO.

CHESS CLUB BUDUCNOST WINNER OF PREMIER LEAGUE OF
MONTENEGRO 2013
Chess Club Buducnost from Podgorica is
the winner of the Premier League of
Montenegro, which was held in Cetinje,
Montenegro June 24th - 2nd July, 2013 in
Hotel Grand. CC Buducnost scored 15
match points (36.5 points). They won 7
matches, drew one and lost one match.

CC Mimoza from Tivat and CC Rumija from Bar tied for second and third place with
14 match points, but due to better tie-break - more points, silver medal went to chess
players from CC Mimoza, and bronze medal went to their colleagues from CC
Rumija.
The trophies and the medals were awarded to the winning teams by Mr Vladimir
Sakotic, President of Chess Federation of Montenegro and Executive Director of
European Chess Union. He addressed the players and the audience at the closing
ceremony, congratulated the winners and all the other teams for their fair play and
behaviour, and said that this has been one of the most exciting and most militant
championships held so far.
The Tournament was played as a Round Robin one, with 10 teams and 9 rounds.
Time control was 40 moves in 90 minutes and 30 minutes to the end of the game + 30
seconds increment per move, starting from move one. Each team consisted of 6

GM EVGENY SVESHNIKOV WINS THE LATVIAN RAPID CHESS
CHAMPIONSHIP 2013
GM Evgeny Sveshnikov won the Latvian
Rapid Chess Championship with the final
score of 7.5 out of 9 and better tie-break
than GM Arturs Neiksans, who finished
second.
IM Vitalijs Samolins was third in the final
ranking – 6.5/9.
The Latvian Rapid Chess Championship was held on June 29-30, 2013 in Mezezers.
Chief Arbiter of the tournament was Cimins Alberts, and tournament director -
Skinke Katrina.
Women Rapid Chess Champion of Latvia became WGM Ilze Berzina – 5.5 points out
of 9. The silver medal was taken by WGM Dana Reizniece-Ozola – 5/9, while the
bronze by WGM Laura Rogule – 5/9.

The Latvian Blitz Chess Championship was held on 28th June at the same site. In the
men’s section the winner was GM Evgeny Sveshnikov – 11 out of 13, GM Alexei
Shirov was second – 9.5/13, while GM Arturs Neiksans was third – 9.5/13.
In the women’s section the winner was WGM Ilze Berzina with 8.5 points out of 13,
WGM Laura Rogule was second with 7.5/13, whereas WGM Dana Reizniece-Ozola
finished third – 7.5/13.

IM EMIL SZALANCZY WINS THE HUNGARIAN SENIOR
INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2013
IM Emil Szalanczy won the Hungarian Senior
Individual Championship scoring 7.5 points
out of 9. IM Imre Horvath finished second in
the final ranking on one point distance from
the winner. With 6 points, IM Ferenc Portisch
won the third place.
The Hungarian Senior Inidividual
Championship was held from 17-23 June, 2013.
Tournament director of the Championship was Attila Mészáros, while Erzsébet
Szalainé Czingler acted as ChiefArbiter.
