Withalongstandingcommitmenttopublicserviceandcommunityinvolvement,theUWLawSchooloffersanarrayofpublicinterest-orientedcourses,clinicalopportuni-ties,andstudentorganizations.TheOfficeofCareerServicessupportsstudentsinterestedinpublicinterestcareersthroughcounseling,paneldiscussions,jobpostings,andmore. Thiscommitmenttopublicinterestisattheheartofour“lawinaction”approachtoteaching,inwhichstudentslearnnotjustlegalrules,butalsowhythoserulesevolvedtoaddresssocialconcerns,andhowthoserulesoperateintherealworld. WhileWisconsinisn’ttheonlyschoolthatofferscoursesfeaturingabroader,moresociallyawareviewoflaw,itistheonlyschoolwhosehallmarkisthelaw-in-actionapproachtoteaching.

UW Law School Earns “A” in National Jurist List of Top Public Interest Law Schools

Theforty-secondannualLEObanquetbroughtapproximately400peopletotheConcourseHotelinMadisononMarch26,2011. Thisyear’sbanquetwasheldinconjunctionwiththeComingTogeth-erofthePeoplesConference,bothofwhichwerehostedbytheIndigenousLawStudentAssociation(ILSA).Thisyearmarkedthe25thAnniversaryoftheComingTogetherofthePeoplesConference,theoldeststudent-runconferenceonIndianlaw. ThekeynotespeakerfortheLEOBanquetwasDeputyAssistantSecretaryofIndianAffairsfortheU.S.DepartmentoftheInterior,Donald“Del”Laverdure.Laverdureisa1990alumoftheUWLawSchoolandenrolledmemberoftheCrowTribeofMontana. Laverdure’skeynotereferencedhisownexperiencesandpersonaljourneytoexplainwhykeepingintouchwithone’sculturalrootsissoimportantasanattorney.Heusedphotostonarratehisspeech,tellingtheaudience,“Wemustalwaysrememberwherewecomefrom.” Thisyear’sbanquetdifferedfrompasteventswiththeadditionoftwospecialrecognitions.ThefirstwasforKateFrigo,athird-year

student,whowashonoredbyfellowclassmateandLEOmemberJimmyAndersonforherdedicationandassistancetoAndersonandhisfam-ilyafterhesufferedseriousinjuriesfromacaraccidentthatoccurredlastyear.ThesecondrecognitionwasgiventoDeanDavisbyseveralfromtheLawSchoolcommunity,includingLEOCommitteeChairPeterCarstenson,FriendsoftheLEOCommittee,andLaverdure.TherecognitionculminatedinthepresentationofaquiltfromILSAtoDeanDavisforhisserviceandsupportoftheLEOProgramandcommunity. Inhisremarks,Daviscom-mentedontheimportanceoftheProgram.“TheLEOprogramanditsmembersaretodayseenasintegralandessentialtotheday-to-daylifeandfabricofourLawSchool,”hesaid,addressingtheaudience.“[Youare]stewardsofatraditionthatthroughtheenergy,leadershipandcommitmentofyouandthosewhowentbeforeyoucanfairlyclaimalargeshareofcreditforwhatmakesthisSchool—andinparticularitssenseofcommunity—sospecial.Youare,inotherwords,oneofourbraggingpoints.Neverforgetit.”

UWLawSchoolClinicalProfessorGretchenVineyisthe2011recipi-entoftheMarygoldMelliAchieve-mentAwardconferredbytheLegalAssociationofWomen(LAW)torecognizesignificantcontributionstowomeninthelaw.

Viney,a1978graduateofUWLawSchool,servesastheAssoci-ateDirectoroftheLawSchool’sLawyeringSkillsProgram.VineyalsoteachesClientInterviewing&Counseling,RealEstateTransac-tions,andGuardianadLitemPrac-tice.Shealsomaintainsapart-timeprivatepractice. Vineyisrecognizedstatewideforherworkandexpertiseasaguardianadlitemforchildren,el-ders,andthedisabled.Herpracticeincludesguardianadlitemwork,mediation,terminationsofparentalrights,andadoptions.VineyhasbeenanactivememberoftheStateBarofWisconsinformorethanthirtyyears,havingservedasthesecretaryandonnumerousboards,committees,anddivisions.SheisalsothepastpresidentoftheSaukCountyBarAssociation. TheMelliAwardisnamedinhonorofProfessorEmeritaMarygold

(Margo)ShireMelli,whojoinedtheUWLawSchoolfacultyin1959astheschool’sfirstwomantenure-trackprofessorandwentontobecomeapioneerinthefieldoffamilylaw. InannouncingtheawardtoViney,LAWPresidentNelleRohlichstated,“WearehonoredtonameMs.Vineyasrecipientofthisaward.Throughouthercareer,Ms.Vineyhastirelesslypromotedequalityandsocialjustice,advancingtheinterestofwomeninsociety,thelegalpro-fession,andthecommunity.” Uponhearingthenewsoftheaward,Vineycommented,“Iwasnominatedbyaformerstudentwhoseesmeasarolemodelforherandforotherlawstudentsandlawyers.Ineversetouttobearolemodel,soIamsomewhatsurprised—althoughadmittedlyveryhonored—tobeinthisposition.TohavemynameassociatedwithMargoMelliisbothupliftingandhumbling.”

Lester A. Pineshasbeennamedthe2010recipientoftheWarrenH.StolperAward,anhonorthatrecognizesexcellenceinteachingandacommitmenttotheUWLawSchoolonthepartofanadjunctprofessor.Pinesisarespectedcivilandcriminallitigatorwho

hasappearedincourtsthroughoutWisconsinandhaslitigatedfederalmattersinWisconsin,Illinois,Iowa,Michigan,Ohio,andNewYork.HeisaseniorpartnerwithCullenWestonPines&BachLLP,whereheleadsthefirm’slitigationandappellatepractices.Hiscivilpracticeencompassesawiderangeofareas,includingcommercial,employment,civilrights,andenvironmentallaw. PinesdevelopedtheverypopularPre-trialAdvocacycoursewithformerclinicalprofessorSteveMeiliandothermembersoftheUWLawSchooladjunctfaculty,andhastaughtorco-taughtthecoursesinceitscreation.

Lastfall,theLawSchoolwelcomedthreenewclinicalfacultymembersandanewclinicalofferingtoitsexpansivecatalogofreal-lifelegalexperiencesforstudents. TheLegislativeandGovern-mentClinic(GLLC)waslaunchedwithitsfirstgroupofstudentsthisspring.TheGLLCprovidesstudentswiththeuniqueopportunitytoobserveandparticipateinthemanyfacetsofgovernmentallaw,policy,andthelegislativeprocess.Workingunderthedirectsupervisionofclini-calfacultyandclientsinlegislative,administrative,andjudicialsettings,studentsgainfirst-handexperiencecollaboratingwithgovernmentclientsonlegalissueswithpolicysignificance. LaunchingthisnewclinicalopportunityisProfessorKathleen Noonan,whojoinsUWasaClini-calAssociateProfessor.Noonanhasworkedextensivelyattheinter-sectionofhealthandwelfarelawandpolicy,especiallyasitrelatestochildren.Shehasservedasacourt-appointedmediatorincasesconcerningMedicaid,childwel-fare,andmentalhealthpolicies.Herwrittenworkshavereceived

nationalattention.NoonanearnedherB.S.inpsychologyfromBarnardCollege,ColumbiaUniversity,andherJ.D.fromNortheasternUniver-sitySchoolofLaw.ShepreviouslytaughtatNortheasternUniversitySchoolofLawandattheUniversityofPennsylvaniaSchoolofMedicine,andintheRobertWoodJohnsonClinicalScholarsprogram.ShewillteachHealthLawandAdministra-tionattheLawSchoolinadditiontodirectingtheclinic. ProfessorKimberly AldermanjoinedtheRemingtonCenterinAugust2010asaClinicalAssistantProfessortoworkwiththeCriminalAppealsProjectandtheLegalAs-sistanceforInstitutionalizedPersonsProject.AldermanearnedherJ.D.cumlaudefromHowardUniversity,andthencompletedajudicialclerk-shipattheSuperiorCourtoftheVirginIslandsontheIslandofSt.Croix.ShethenworkedforasmallfirminNewMexico,representingplaintiffsincivilrightscasesanddefendantsincriminalcases.ShehasalsocompletedanM.A.inInter-nationalArtCrimeStudiesfromtheAssociationofResearchintoCrimesAgainstArtinAmelia,Italy.

Aldermanhasascholarlyinterestinculturalpropertylaw,inparticularhowtheillicitantiquitiestradeaffectsmarginalizedcreatorculturesinsourcenations. ProfessorAdam StevensonreturnstotheRemingtonCenterasaClinicalAssistantProfessor,andwillworkwiththeOxfordFederalProjectandLegalAssistancetoInstitution-alizedPersons(LAIP).StevensonreceivedhisB.S.ineconomicsandpoliticalsciencefromUW-Madison,andearnedhisJ.D.cumlaudefromtheUWLawSchoolin2010.Dur-inghistimeinlawschool,StevensonwasastudentinternwiththeOxfordFederalProjectandaprojectassistantwithLAIP,andalsoworkedasajudicialinternfortheHonorableJulieGenoveseoftheDaneCountyCircuitCourt.Stevensonalsoworkedonbothcivilandcriminallitigationasalawclerkinprivatelawpractices.Stevenson’sresearchfocusesontheuseofpriorconvictionstoenhanceanindividual’ssentence.Hehasalsostudiedmethodsofearlyrelease,includingtheearnedreleasemecha-nismscreatedin2009WisconsinAct28,the2009-11biannualWis-consinbudget.

Ursula Weigoldjoinedthefacultyin2010astheDirectorofLegalResearch&Writing.Weigoldhasovertwelveyearsofexperiencedirectinglegalwritingprogramsandfifteenyearsofteachingexperienceinlegalresearchandwriting,mostrecentlyatCornellLawSchool.Shehasbeenworkingcloselywiththe

administrationandthefacultytore-organizetheLegalResearch&Writ-ingprogramatUWLawSchool.Weigoldwillsupervisethenewpro-gramforfirst-yearlawstudentsinwhichsmall-groupprofessors,withtheassistanceoftheadministrationandlegalwritingstaff,featuredalegalwritingcomponentintheircourse.
