The Wizard of Oz
The musical opens in Kansas where Dorothy lives with her dog, Toto, on her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry's farm. Toto gets in trouble with a mean neighbour, Miss Almira Gulch, when he bites her. Miss Gulch wants to have Toto put down. To save her dog Dorothy decides to run away from home.
Dorothy and Toto encounter Professor Marvel, a kindly fortune teller who, realizing Dorothy has run away, uses his crystal ball to convince her that Aunt Em is ill. Dorothy races home just as a tornado approaches. Locked out of the storm cellar, she seeks safety in the house. She awakens to find the tornado has sent the house spinning into the sky.
Suddenly the house strikes the ground. She and Toto have landed in Munchkinland, part of the Land of Oz. Glinda, the Good Witch of the North and the Munchkins welcome her as their heroine – the house has landed on and killed the Wicked Witch of the East, In the middle of the celebra on, the Wicked Witch of the West arrives to claim her sister's ruby slippers, but Glinda transports them onto Dorothy's feet before the witch can get them. The witch swears revenge on Dorothy for her sister's death. Glinda tells Dorothy to follow the yellow brick road to the Emerald City, where the Wizard of Oz might be able to help her get back home.
On her way, Dorothy meets and befriends a Scarecrow, who wants a brain, a Tin Man, who desires a heart and a Cowardly Lion, who is in need of cour-age The Witch a!empts to stop them reaching the Wizard but they finally reach the Emerald City to see the great Oz, He agrees to grant their wishes when they bring him the Witch of the West's brooms ck but this proves to be a very difficult task to complete……….

Bringing a musical to stage requires a huge amount of work and commitment from everyone involved. We have been busily rehearsing for the last couple of months and we hope that you all enjoy the show.
We would like to thank all those on stage and backstage. Every-one has worked really hard to bring the Wizard of Oz to you. We have some very new members performing tonight and some really experienced ones also. Some of our Munckins are carrying on a family tradi on of being on stage in Coachford as their grandparents used to perform in the Pantomimes in the 1950s and 60s. The tradi on of theatre is strong in Coachford and we want to con nue this into the future. If you would like to get involved please contact our secretary on 086 8177684.
A very special thanks to the Hall commi!ee, especially Mary Spillane and to Dairygold Coachford, especially Thady Delaney. We’d also like to thank the members of Coachford Fóróige club for their help in making the Munchkinland flowers.
Thanks also to the local businesses for sponsoring the raffle prizes and a special thanks to Macroom Credit Union for spon-soring the programme. Please support our sponsors when you can.
