Dear Parishioners, A few years ago, nine people climbed Mount Rainer which is 14,000 feet high. One of the climbers had a prosthetic leg, two were deaf, one suffered from severe epilepsy, and five were blind. But, all nine people made it to the top and back down safely. When asked how in the world they had been able to do such a thing, one of the blind members of the team said, “We had a lot of help from each other on the trip. No one can conquer a mountain alone.” Another member of the team said, “Once we all admitted that we had some limitations, we each promised to ‘fill in’ for whatever each one needed. With all of us ‘filling in’ for each other, we made a great team.” One of the team members concluded by saying, “Climbing a moun-tain or living life — we all need each other. Whether you realize it or not, everyone of us has limitations and because of that you can’t negotiate mountains — or life — very well on your own.” Those mountain climbers have a great deal to teach us. How often have you felt overwhelmed and defeated by life? How much of your feeling overwhelmed or defeated was due to trying to take on heavy burdens alone? Everyone experi-ences difficulties, setbacks, and limitations, but we do not have to face them all alone. Admitting our limitations and reach-ing out for help are important steps in overcoming mountain-like difficulties. Sometimes we, too, need to ‘fill in for others’ and others need to ‘fill in for us’ so that we can achieve goals, and reach the top of the mountain safely. In the words of Delta Airlines — keep climbing — but do it supporting one another. Have a great week!
Love, Fr. Bill

WORSHIP AID for OCTOBER 11-12
Opening Hymn — Gather Us In
Here in this place new light is streaming, now is the darkness vanished away, See in this space our fears and our dreamings, brought here to you in the light of this day. Gather us in – the lost and forsaken, gather us in – the blind and the lame; Call to us now, and we shall awaken, we shall arise at the sound of our name.
Here we will take the wine and the water, here we will take the bread of new birth, Here you shall call your sons and your daughters, call us anew to be salt for the earth. Give us to drink the wine of compassion, give us to eat the bread that is you; Nourish us well, and teach us to fashion lives that are holy and hearts that are true.

Penitential Act B:
Priest: Have mercy on us, O Lord. People: For we have sinned against you. Priest: Show us, O Lord, your mercy. People: And grant us your salvation. Gloria (sung)
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord, Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 23

WORSHIP AID FOR OCTOBER 10-11
Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. (All bow at the following words through “and became man.”) For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the father and the Son, who with the father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Preparation of the Gifts
May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of His name, for our good and the good of all His holy Church. Sanctus
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Memorial Acclamation
Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrection, you have set us free. Invitation to Communion
Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
Please remain at your seat to receive Holy Communion. The ministers will come to you through the empty row in front of you.
As the minister approaches, please stand if you are able and remove your mask. You are asked to please receive Holy Communion in the hand.
After receiving Communion, you may kneel or be seated and replace your mask.

Communion Hymn — Bread of Life From Heaven
Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. Closing Hymn — O God Beyond All Praising
O God, beyond all praising, we worship you today and sing the love amazing that songs cannot repay. For we can only wonder at every gift you send, At blessings without number and mercies without end. We lift our hearts before you and wait upon your word; We honor and adore you, our great and mighty Lord.
Then hear, O gracious Savior, accept the love we bring, That we who know your favor may serve you as our King; And whether our tomorrows be filled with good or ill, We’ll triumph through our sorrows and rise to bless you still, To marvel at your beauty and glory in your ways, And make a joyful duty our sacrifice of praise.

PARISH NEWS
Parish Nurse Tip of the Week Good Oral Care
Every time you smile, frown, talk, or eat, you use your mouth and teeth. Teeth help us continue to enjoy the taste of food and allows us to bite and chew foods that otherwise could become a chal-lenge. They also let us make different facial expressions, form words, and begin the process of digestion.
To protect your oral health, be sure to practice good oral hygiene daily. Recom-mendations include: brushing your teeth at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste; floss daily; and rinse with mouthwash to remove food particles left after brushing and flossing. Using an electric toothbrush and the water pic apparatus is highly recommended by many dentists. An electric toothbrush does a superior job of cleaning teeth. And, the addition of rinsing with a water pic does much to prevent gum disease.

How to Participate — Second Week of October
Fast
You might choose other works of charity or exercises of piety to take the place of fasting and abstinence. This week be extra cheerful during the day, and smile at everyone you meet.
Pray
Create a prayerful environment in your home. Does your home reflect your faith? Are prayer materials easily accessible in your home? If not, this fall could be a great opportunity to make your faith more physically present in your home. You don’t need anything elaborate, but even just placing simple pieces of sacred art around the home or in a “prayer corner” is a fantastic way to center your day and family life on God. You can also place Bibles and Rosaries in a convenient location, to help encourage prayer. — from www.FamilyRosary.org
Reflect
The term “Domestic Church” refers to the family, the smallest body of gathered believers in Christ. John Paul the Great was proud to be a champion of the family, and its crucial role in the life of all Christians. Along with the many letters and homilies directed to the family, he also wrote Familiaris Consortio, where he identifies primary tasks that each family (Domestic Church) should strive to accomplish:
▪ Forming a community of persons
▪ Serving life participating in the development of society
▪ Sharing in the life and mission of the Church

PARISH AND COMMUNITY NEWS Perpetuate the Gift Appeal for Retired Priests Fund As our priests retire, the Diocese helps provide a retire-ment income that comes from parish support. This fall appeal helps parishes contribute to the fund and keep it solvent. Every parish is assessed a certain amount to con-tribute to the fund. Our assessment for this fiscal year is $39,143. What is brought in through this Perpetuate the Gift collection is credited toward that amount, thus lowering what we have to pay out of parish funds. Envelopes are being mailed to all households in our parish for this important appeal.
Your generosity really makes a big difference — thank you for any contribution you can make!

Are You or Someone You Know Hurting From a Past Abortion?
Studies show that one out of four women in the United States loses a child to abortion. Project Rachel is the Catho-lic Church’s diocesan-based ministry to those suffering in the aftermath of abortion. The nationwide ministry helps mothers, fathers, family members, friends, and people of faith or no faith who seek compassionate and non-judgmental help. Priests, religious, counselors, and laypeo-ple provide a team response of care that can help to heal those wounded by abortion.
Abortion’s impact is extensive and the need for help is great. About 35 million women have lost one or more children to abortion. In addition, a roughly equal number of men have fathered a child who was then aborted. The grandparents of the deceased child or other family members or their friends are often involved.
Project Rachel Ministry offers help for all who seek God’s mercy, healing and love. If you or someone you know is suffering after abortion, please call the Project Rachel Referral Line (888-456-HOPE or 419-260-5811), or e-mail Kerstin Pakka at kpakka@toledodiocese.org. To learn more about Project Rachel, visit www.hopeafterabortion.org.
Project Rachel also offers help for those who supported or participated in an abortion in any way and are suffering as a result. To find out how you too can find hope and healing, visit www.abortionshockwaves.org.

Since participation in political life is a moral obligation, Catholics need to form their conscience with the mind and heart
of the Church on issues of consequence. This outline is the fifth of eight, which will examine important moral and
political issues. This fifth outline will provide an overview of the issue of immigration.
Immigration
The first principle of Catholic Social Teaching is the dignity of the human person. From the moment of conception, each
person is made in the image and likeness of God. This principle teaches us then that every immigrant, documented or
undocumented, is made in God’s image and deserves our love and respect as a child of God.
As the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has written:
The Church supports the human rights of all people and offers them pastoral care, education, and social services,
no matter what the circumstances of entry into this country, and it works for the respect of the human dignity of
all especially those who find themselves in desperate circumstances. (Welcoming the Stranger Among Us: Unity
in Diversity, A Statement of the U.S. Catholic Bishops, 2000)
Thus our starting point in discussing the immigration issue is one of mutual respect and the recognition of the dignity of
our fellow man, especially the immigrant among us. One who has traveled to Latin American countries in particular can
understand some of the desperate circumstances which drive migrants to our border seeking a better life.
Of course, the Church recognizes that a sovereign nation has a right and a responsibility to protect its own borders. As
Pope Francis has stated:
Can borders be controlled? Yes, each country has a right to control its borders, who enters and who leaves, and
countries that are in danger—of terrorism or the like—have more right to control them more . . . (Pope Francis,
Interview with the Spanish newspaper El País on January 22, 2017)
The sovereignty of nations is consistent thought in Catholic Social Teaching as is further explained in the Catechism of
the Catholic Church, paragraph 2241:
Political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible, may make the exercise of
the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants’ duties
toward their country of adoption. Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual
heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws, and to assist in carrying civic burdens.
In summation, Catholics approaching the immigration issue must maintain a balance between caring for the dignity of
every human person, be they documented or undocumented in our nation, while appreciating the necessity of each nation
state to regulate its borders for the common good. Given the prosperity in the United States of America, it is also
important for our nation to strive to seek to help, as best as we are able, those seeking a better life:
The more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of the
security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin. (Catechism of the Catholic
Church, 2241)
