BODY SYSTEMSUnit 2: Cells & Systems

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO LEARN?

➤ How our body systems work together

➤ Describe the respiratory, circulatory, digestive, excretory, and sensory systems (That is 5 systems)!

➤ Describe the roles of organs and tissues in each system

➤ Describe the functions of types of cells in each system

➤ Describe how the body functions in response to the environment (changes).

HOW ARE WE GOING TO LEARN ALL THIS STUFF?!

➤ Format of class:

➤ Lecture

➤ Case Study

➤ Research

WHY THIS STUFF IS NOT JUST STUFF.

1. We need to understand how our body works so that we can make good decisions our health.

2. We need to understand how our body works so that we can understand how medicine, exercise, genetics, and diet affect our bodies.

3. We need to understand how our body works so that when we go to Body Worlds we can tell our family what is going on.

ON TILL MAY 31st!

NERVOUS SYSTEMUnit 2: Cells & Systems

FUNCTIONS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

1) coordinates and controls the actions of all the organs and organ systems of the body

2) detects, processes and responds to environmental stimuli that is external or internal example: reflex

FUNCTIONS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

1) coordinates and controls the actions of all the organs and organ systems of the body

HOW?

FUNCTIONS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

Coordinates and controls the actions of all the organs and organ systems of the body.

HOW?

Senses (5): 1) sight, 2)hearing, 3) smell, 4) taste, 5) touch

actions: run (muscles), hide (heart rate), search (brain), remember (brain), move (muscles)!

FUNCTIONS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

➤ 2) detects, processes and responds to environmental stimuli that is external or internal.

What stimuli?

FUNCTIONS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

2) detects, processes and responds to environmental stimuli that is external or internal.

What stimuli?

Internal External

examples: hunger, thirst examples: loud noises, smoke

FUNCTIONS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

➤ Reflex: an automatic response by the nervous system to an external stimulus

➤ reflexes protect you from injury by reducing the time it takes to react to harmful stimuli.

MAJOR ORGANS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

1. Brain

2. Spinal Cord

3. Nerves

Sensory organs

4. eyes

5. nose

6. ears

7. skin

8. tongue

CNS PNS

COMMUNICATE

sends and receives messages from CNS

ORGANIZATION OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

➤ 2 “Pathways” of the Peripheral Nervous System

1. Autonomic Nervous system: involuntary

2. Somatic nervous system: voluntary

Organize these responses into involuntary and voluntary:

Breathing Patellar Reflex Running in Soccer

Dancing Heart pumping blood

MAJOR TISSUES OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

➤ 1) White matter: allows messages to pass quickly between grey matter

➤ 2) Grey matter: muscle control, sensory perception

➤ 3) Nerves: bundle of axons in the PNS

➤ 4) Ganglia: nerve cell cluster that sends information from the P.N.S. back to C.N.S.

SUMMARY TIME

➤ With your desk partner:

➤ Write BOTH of your names on the exit slip

➤ Write your class number on the exit slip

➤ Hand in the exit slip on the front desk

QUESTIONS

1. What are the two functions of the Nervous System?

2. What are the 8 major organs that make up the nervous system?

3. What are the four tissues that make up the organs of the nervous system?

CELLS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

➤ Neurons

CELLS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

➤ Axons: send messages

➤ Dendrites: receive messages

-controls all other systems

-homeostasis

MEDICAL APPLICATIONS

➤ Disease is caused by:

➤ genes

➤ environment (injury, exposure)

➤ examples?
