Ferdinand Porsches blue-printturned the dream of automotivemobility for the masses into apeoples car. The automobilelaid the foundation for a com-pany which rapidly acquiredinternational significance after
the Second World War.
The motor of the Wirtschafts- wunder was air-cooled andfitted at the rear of a car whosedistinctive silhouette made Volkswagen a household nameall over the world, just as theTransporter launched in 1950became a much-loved work-horse and camper.
Numerous production facilitiesoutside Europe were alreadybeing set up in the 1950s tobring the automaker closer tothe customer.
Having evolved into a Germanautomotive group with the
acquisition of Auto UnionGmbH and NSU Motoren- werke AG in the 1960s, thedynamic market success of thePassat, Golf and Polo post-1973triggered further corporategrowth towards a multi-brand
group: SEAT andSKODA wereadded in 1985 and 1991,Bentley, Lamborghini andBugatti in 1998.
They were joined by thelegendary sports car makerPorsche AG in 2012. The Groupalso welcomed the motorcyclebrand Ducati under its roof.
The Volkswagen Commercial
Vehicles brand, the Scaniabrand acquired in 2008 and theMAN brand which was takenover in 2012 with factories inEurope, Africa and South America provide a differen-tiated range of productsspanning city vans, trucks andbusses to suit the most diversemobility requirements.
The financial services pro- vided by Volkswagen FinancialServices AG, a company whoseroots go back as far as 1949,also contribute to the automo-tive success of the VolkswagenGroup.
Founded on strong brands, the
Volkswagen Group continuesits successful automotive tradi-tion with fascinating products.
Bolstered by another rise inunit sales to more than 9 million vehicles, the Volkswagen Group
remains on course to becomethe worlds leading automakerby 2018 economically andecologically.
