Objectives

• IDENTIFY applicable Navigational Rules for intended route.

• EXAMINE navigation lights. • EXAMINE Automatic Identification System (AIS).• EXAMINE internal communication system.• VERIFY radar compliance with applicable

standards.• EXAMINE magnetic compass.

Objectives

• EXAMINE swing meter.• EXAMINE radio equipment.• EXAMINE sound signaling devices.• EXAMINE navigation charts and publications.• EXAMINE vessel search light.• EXAMINE electronic position fixing device• EXAMINE records documenting required tests

prior to getting underway.

Marine Radar

• UTVs > 12 M (39.4 ft)• Exempt in fleeting areas, assistance

towing, pollution response

• Meets Radio Technical Commission for Maritime Services (RTCM) Standard;• Detailed regs 33 CFR 164.72• When in doubt, contact manufacturer to

see if particular model meets standards.

• UTVs > 12 M (39.4 ft)• directed from main

steering station• range 2 times length

of tow

Magnetic Compass

• UTV operating exclusively on Western Rivers• May have either a

1. Illuminated swing meter or,

2. Illuminated card type magnetic steering compass readable from main steering station

• All other UTV’s >39.4’ must have illuminated card type magnetic steering compass

Swing Meter vs Magnetic Compass

Electronic Position Fixing Device(GPS or Loran)

• 33 CFR 164.72(a)(6)

• UTVs > 12 M (39.4 ft);• if towing seaward of

navigable waters of U.S.• or > 3 NM from shore

Great Lakes

Echo Depth Sounding Device

• 33 CFR 164.72(a)(5)

• UTVs > 12 M (39.4 ft);• not required for UTVs

towing exclusively on Western Rivers and,

• Inland Waters in CG D8

Automatic Identification System (AIS)

• 33 CFR 164.46(a)(3)

• UTVs > 26 ft & > 600 HP;
