What is the writing task?● The Naplan writing task is a test that

assesses your ability to compose a cohesive, coherent and structured written composition in 40 minutes.

● You will be given a writing prompt that will give you a stimulus and ask you to compose either a persuasive or narrative response

How should I approach the task?● You have 5 minutes to plan your ideas

● 30 minutes to write

● 5 minutes to edit. You may need to add in punctuation, check spelling and ensure your ideas make sense.

● The examination booklet has 3 pages

What are the markers looking for?● Naplan is marked against 10 criteria, which determines what band your response will

receive:

Vocabulary 0-5 The range and precision of language choices

Cohesion 0-4 The control of multiple threads and relationships over the whole text. Through the use of connectives and referring words 9e.g. Suddenly, meanwhile, finally.

Punctuation 0-5 The use of correct and appropriate punctuation to aid reading of the text

Paragraphs 0-2 The segmenting of text into paragraphs that assists the reader to negotiate the narrative.
