Industry transformation

A national program

• Increasingly popular internationally • South America and China

•Low cost compared to alternatives•Can be inserted into existing city road system • Initiated in Johannesburg – Rea Vaya •Associated with national policy to devolve

public transport responsibility to cities (National Land Transport Act)

Cost effective

BRT• Trams R65 – 160 Million/km• Light rail R100 – 250 Million / km• Urban rail R150 – 400Million / km• Elevated rail R325 – 650Million / km • Metro R325 – 2000 Million / km

R3.2 - 100 Mil /km

Cape Town IRT trunk

infrastructure is

costing about R 40

million / km on

average

Factors in operational cost viability

•Average trip distance•Passenger numbers•Peak to base ridership ratio•Minimum frequencies in off-peak •Two way passenger flow•Local labour and other cost structures •User income levels

South Africa’s spread out cities

Cape Town Central City area

• For Cape Town central area to be one of the great urban spaces it needs • Significantly increased activity levels • Sustained for 18 hours a day

• Unless a much greater proportion of mobility and access is provided by public transport, walking and cycling this will not be feasible because of congestion

• Some trunk services through CBD to Waterfront• Key to movement within area between Salt River and

Sea Point is the feeder services
