Arterial Network Kenya compiled by Boaz Adhengo

       This directory has been created to give every artist in Kenya an opportunity of an online presence no matter what their experience with publishing or the financial situation. Part of the mission of Arterial Network Kenya Chapter is the belief that the arts are essential to the life of our community. Arterial Network strives to maintain as comprehensive a list of arts and cultural organisations and presenters as possible. The Mwesaneo arts directory provides listings of visual, performing and literary artists, art venues and arts and culture organizations, segmented by medium or type of performance art. The Arts Directory is designed to connect patrons, businesses and event coordinators directly with artists for potential bookings, commissions, exhibitions and sales, performances and special events. This directory is free to artists and to the public. Artists living and working in Kenya may mail their professional profile, detailing their products and services, free of charge. The profile may include representative images and related stories. Inclusion or exclusion of an organization is not to be interpreted as judgment by the ANK to the quality of its activities. If the reader knows an arts organization that should be added to the list, or that contact information needs to be updated, s/he is asked to contact the ANK office with the information. This directory is available in an Adobe Acrobat ® PDF format. To print the PDF directory, you first need to download and install the FREE Adobe Acrobat Reader. The Creative Arts Society of Kenya will list both profit making and nonprofit entities that respond to requests for information. Additions and changes are made at the beginning of each month. A complete update of entries occurs in late fall.

Dear Art Enthusiast: Greetings from the Creative Arts Society of Kenya, an organization that has taken to be its responsibility, that of supporting in part, many of the objectives that Arterial Network Kenya Chapter has pronounced to share. Mwesaneo Art Directory comes at a time when the verge of artistic development has crystalised towards a game of monopoly and this makes it significant to also dive towards cartelism; productions of thought that will propel the sector yet another mile. Three words: Sanaa (art), Eneo (place) and Mwelekeo (direction) have been inspirational towards the coining of this name Mwe/san/eo and with it we pronounce the first ever open access art and culture directory in the history of Kenya. It will be a significant tool in this objective of creating art and culture cartels, and with such an inception, promote the utmost objective of networking. I welcome criticism or encouragement on how to make this effort even more vibrant. “Nekoseo” is a Kamba dialect to mean “very fine”; and in your utter of ‘Mwesaneo’, it sounds as though you are also saying very fine, ‘safsana’ and yes, we are good! Creative Arts Society of Kenya is a not for profit arts organization that works to build a more vibrant, diverse and economically healthy communities through the arts. Our vision is to support a community where artists can live, work and showcase their art. Our mission is to promote connections between individuals, businesses and artists for the collective benefit of the Kenyan community. Arts and culture are powerful tools with which to engage communities in various levels of change; they are a means to public dialogue, contribute to the development of a community’s creative learning thus create healthy communities capable of action, provide a powerful tool for community mobilization and activism, and help build community capacity and leadership. Mwesaneo Art Directory will endeavor to include:

• Information about Arterial Network artists and our supporting non-artist members. • Listings of artists sorted by county and arranged alphabetically. • Listing of family-friendly artists/studios and CASK members who offer workshops/classes. • A calendar listing of year-round art and studio events in Kenya. • An area map of Nairobi including parking and info booth locations, dining establishments and more.

As you scroll through the pages, develop a purpose of networking. Be an artist, orient with art and love the creative process. We must in this pursuit fuse creativity with culture and discover what economic relations hold them together; in such a thought developed, we will be battling poverty and improving the livelihood of the creative. Lets network to promote our creative potentials, form your cartels yes, but maintain the ethical mansion of having a national etiquette.
