Applications
AUMA GSTI multi-turn gearboxes are used in nuclear
power plants for the automation of gate valves and globe
valves with high torque requirements. For this purpose
they are combined with an AUMA SAN or SAI actuator or
with any other multi-turn actuator which has been quali-
fied accordingly.
The gearboxes are certified according to IEEE 382-1996.
They are qualified for use in outside and inside contain-
ment applications.
The GSTI gearbox range is ideally adapted to AUMA
SAN and SAI multi-turn actuators. By combining the
multi-turn actuators with a GSTI gearbox, the maximum
torque range is expanded from a maximum of 1,600 Nm
for SAN or 1,000 Nm for SAI to up to 16,000 Nm.

Since the mid-1970s, AUMA has been producing
devices for the use in nuclear power plants which have
provided long-term operational reliability in this field.
GSTI multi-turn gearboxes are based on the GST
multi-turn gearbox whose first generation was introduced
to the market as early as 1970. Ever since the gearboxes
have been continuously improved. A sophisticated design
and the use of first grade materials ensure long-term and
virtually maintenance-free operation.

Modular design/versions
Modular concept – different applicationsValves in nuclear power plants are used in areas with dif-
ferent safety relevance (outside containment and inside con-
tainment) but also in conventional areas. They are available in
many designs and different sizes. Gate valves and globe
valves with diameters ranging from a few centimetres to sev-
eral metres are to be opened and closed electrically.
AUMA meets the various requirements with their modular
product range. GST and GSTI multi-turn gearboxes are central
elements of this product range. The GST range is suitable for
use in conventional applications and is described in a sepa-
rate brochure.
The GSTI range is qualified for inside containment and
therefore also for outside containment. It can be adapted to
various valve requirements. Due to the possible combinations
with AUMA SAN or SAI actuators, available in a number of
sizes and versions, various solutions for the automation of
gate and globe valves can be found. Combinations with
multi-turn actuators from the SAN range are approved for
use outside containment, combinations with SAI multi-turn
actuators are for inside containment.
Large gate and globe valves within a nuclear power plant
can be automated using these combinations. The largest
combinations provide torques up to 16 000 Nm.

Shutting off and positioning
The duty type is an important selection condition for gear-
boxes used in combination with a multi-turn actuator. Is the
valve to be used as a shut-off device (open-close duty )or is
the valve to be positioned in mid-travel (positioning mode)?
AUMA GSTI multi-turn gearboxes are suitable for
open-close duty and positioning mode.

Design principle
[1]
[2]
[3] Spur gear
This gear type is easy to install and of ro-bust and cost-effective design. The reductionratio extends the torque range of the multi-turnactuator. You have to make sure that the re-duced running speed caused by the gear reduc-tion is still sufficient for your individualapplication.
[4]
[5] Screw plug
The screw plug prevents the ingress of dustand humidity. For rising stems with large thrust, the screw plug is replaced by a stem protectiontube (refer to page 5).
[6]
HousingThe housing is made of spheroidal cast iron
GJS-400-15. This material is resistant to extremevibrations caused e.g. by an earthquake or anairplane crash.
[5]
Valve attachmentThe mounting flange is according to
EN ISO 5210 or DIN 3210.Various output drive types are available. There-fore it is possible to adapt to different types ofvalves. For further information refer to page 11.
[3] [4]
Flange for mounting a multi-turn actua-tor
The flange sizes are according toEN ISO 5210 (optional DIN 3210).The combination between spur gearbox andmulti-turn actuator offers a space-saving advan-tage as the actuator mounting position can beshifted by the distance between gearbox inputflange and output drive flange. Providing a so-lution for your specific installation requirements.
Free shaft endIn case of unfavourable space conditions
where direct mounting of the multi-turn actua-tor is not possible, the input torque may alsobe supplied via a shaft with universal joint atthe free shaft end.

Corrosion protection/ColourCorrosion protection KI
This corrosion protection was specially developed for
AUMA devices used in nuclear power plants.
All outside parts as well as the coatings are free from alu-
minium. Housing parts are sandblasted before painting. A
primer coating and two intermediate coats are applied to this
surface before finish coating.
A decontaminable two-component paint is used for finish
coating.
The total film thickness is at least 280 μm.
Colour
The standard colour of the finish coating is silver-grey
(RAL 7001). Other colours are available on request.
Enclosure protectionIP 68-6
According to EN 60 529, the conditions to fulfil enclosure
protection IP 68 are not defined. In the basic version the GSTI
gearboxes are supplied in enclosure protection IP 68-6.
IP 68-6 means protection against ingress of water during sub-
mersion up 6 m head of water.
Ambient temperaturesThe specified values are also valid for high humidity
(> 95 %).
Normal operation■ – 25 °C to + 80 °C
DBE conditions■ up to + 185 °C for a short period

Functions
The basic function of the GSTI multi-turn gearboxes
is described as follows: Decrease of the input torque required
at the valve by means of a reduction ratio.
The demands on the device are high and clearly stipulated
in the corresponding standards, e.g. IEEE 382. The gearboxes
have to operate reliably over the entire planned operation
time of the power plant and even under DBE conditions.
Furthermore installation and commissioning should be easy
and the maintenance requirements low. Revision work and
inspections can be quickly and easily performed and therefore
downtimes are considerably reduced.
The high demands on availability and ease of maintenance
can only be met by a sophisticated design. The GSTI gearbox
range is an excellent example of this.
Reduction of input torquesThe maximum torque of the SAN multi-turn actuator range
is 1,600 Nm and of the SAI range, 1,000 Nm. However, this
is not sufficient for some valves. In these cases, the actuators
are combined with a GSTI gearbox. Large valves with torque
requirements up to 16 000 Nm can be operated with AUMA
actuator/gearbox combinations.
The increased operating time caused by the reduction ratio
can be compensated for by using multi-turn actuators with
higher output speeds. This has to be observed when sizing
the actuator.
Output torques of up to 16,000 Nm can be achievedby combining a multi-turn gearbox GSTI 40.1 (16:1) with an SAN 25.1multi-turn actuator …
or a multi-turn gearbox GSTI 40.1 (22:1) with an SAI 100 multi-turn actu-ator.

Valve attachment
The gearboxes are mounted to the valve using a mounting
flange standardised according to EN ISO 5210 or DIN 3210.
The output drive types are also manufactured according to
these standards. They establish the mechanical connection
between the output drive of the gearbox and the valve stem
or the valve shaft. The torque is transmitted from the gearbox
to the valve using this connection. There are various output
drive types available for different valve types.
[1] Output drive types B1, B2(EN ISO 5210), or B (DIN 3210)
This output drive is integrated into the hol-low shaft of the gearbox. The torque is trans-mitted via a parallel key. Low radial loads canbe accepted.
[2] Output drive types B3 or B4(EN ISO 5210), or E (DIN 3210)
The torque is transmitted via a parallel key.By using a plug sleeve, output drive type B1can easily be converted to output drivetypes B3 or B4.
[3] Output drive type A(EN ISO 5210/DIN 3210)
Stem nut for rising and non-rotating valvestem. The mounting flange together with thestem nut and thrust bearings form an assembly, which is suitable for accepting thrust. The unitis screwed to the gearbox. Output drive type Acannot accept any radial loads.
[4] Output drive type AF(EN ISO 5210/DIN 3210)
Spring-loaded stem nut for rising andnon-rotating valve stems. The springs compen-sate for dynamic thrust at high speeds or evenfor thermal expansion of the valve stem. Thetorque transmission is supplied via internalteeth.

mine the cycle of accurately defined work processes.
But reliability does not begin during commissioning. It
begins with a well thought out design and careful selection
of materials. This continues with conscientious production
using ultra-modern machinery in clearly controlled and super-
vised steps, while keeping in mind the environment.
At AUMA, quality management is monitored on a daily
basis. Numerous customer and independent audits, backed
by ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification confirm these high
standards.
