Computationalandmathematicaltoolsareusedtopredictthebehavioursoftechnical,physicalandevensocialsystems,rangingfromtomorrow’sweathertotheviabilityofsocialinsurancesystemsandtheglobalclimateonehundredyearsfromnow.Appliedmathematiciansdevisemodelsandalgorithmsthatinfluenceourdailylives.Forexample,everybodyusessearchenginestofindinformationontheinternet.Thankstoadvancedmathematicalalgorithms,thesesearchenginesgiveusthisinformationinafractionofasecond.

ComputationalScienceandEngineeringfocusesonmathematicalmodellingandthesimulationofproblemsthatariseinscienceandengineering,themathematicalanalysisofsuchmodelsandthedevelopmentofnewmathematicalmethodsandtechniquesforanalysingsuchproblems.Itincludescoursesinmathematicalphysics,numericalanalysisandmathematicalsystemtheory.

FinancialEngineeringfocusesonthedevelopmentandapplicationofquantitativemethodsinfinanceandeconomics.Thespecialisationsofferasolidbackgroundinfinancialmathematics,probabilityandnumericalmethods.
