JOINT DEGREE OFFERED BY KÜHNE LOGISTICS UNIVERSITY AND IMO – INTERNATIONAL MARITIME LAW INSTITUTE - IMLI
This international joint degree program is offered
by KLU and IMO – International Maritime Law Insti-
tute – IMLI. The two institutions of higher learning
are joining forces to offer collectively a two-year,
full-time Master of Science degree program combi-
ning International Maritime Law and Humanitarian
Logistics.
This degree will qualify you to master groundbrea-
king logistics challenges and legal issues. Learn to
navigate through the new laws that govern the sea
and maritime operations. They are designed to pro-
tect the environment and maintain human rights in
the societies and communities involved while crea-
ting new ways for people to earn a living.
Acquire experience in analyzing the legal issues
that arise at sea and along the world’s coastlines.
Find out how to organize logistics operations
based on your knowledge of the legal issues.
You will have the skill set necessary for assessing
the financial implications of legal decisions in
logistics.
Learn about customs, port organization and
operations, international treaties and their effect
on operations at sea.
Learn to deal with the challenges of moving
goods and people including in situations of
humanitarian relief.
Help organize shipping routes, taking the legal
implications of human rights laws into considera-
tion and have the answer when cargo is damaged
or lost.

that governments, NGOs and industry are seeking
worldwide.
COURSE STRUCTURE
This prestigious English language program is di-
vided in two parts: international maritime law
courses taught primarily at IMLI, and logistics and
leadership courses taught primarily at KLU. In this
regard, students will spend the first academic year
studying in Malta and the second in Hamburg. The
first summer includes a dissertation project, the se-
cond a thesis. The curriculum also contains integra-
tive material linking the legal and logistics aspects
of the subjects and faculty of the two institutions.
WHO IS THIS PROGRAM FOR
Fresh graduates in law, logistics or neighboring
disciplines with the interest in a career in a new
emerging area and planning to pursue their
education abroad at two prestigious institutions,
governmental officers, or
executives/young professionals.
IMLI was established under the auspices of the In-
ternational Maritime Organization, a specialized
agency of the United Nations, as an international
center for the training of specialists in maritime
law. It offers a Master of Laws (LL.M.) program, a
Research Degree program, an Advanced Diploma
program and several short courses.
Through its programs and courses the institute
contributes to the development and dissemina-
tion of knowledge and expertise in international
maritime law, with special reference to the inter-
national regulations and procedures for safety,
security and efficiency of shipping and the pre-
vention of marine pollution. The main purpose of
the institute is to assist governments, particularly
those of developing countries, to implement IMO
treaties and other international legal instruments.
It provides suitably qualified candidates with high-
level facilities for advanced training, study and
research in international maritime law. Particular
focus is placed on legislative drafting techniques
designed to assist participants in the process of
incorporating international treaty rules into dome-
stic law.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a recogni-
zed university or college. This degree will usually be
in business, economics or law or a relevant field.*
Proficiency in spoken and written English. TOEFL
(iBT 90) or IELTS (Band 6.5) or CAE/CPE (grade
C). The TOEFL, IELTS or an equivalent certificate
must not be older than 2 years at the time of
submitting the application.
APPLICATION DEADLINES FOR INTAKE 2018
Start of application period: November 1, 2017
End of application period: June 30, 2018
Recommended application deadline,
non-EU applicants: March 31, 2018**
We recommend that you submit your application as
early as possible. For fully completed applications
received by December 31, you will be granted a
10 % early-bird discount on the overall tuition upon
enrolment. To be entitled for the discount you need
to fully complete the online application form and
submit it together with your transcript of records.
TUITION FEES
The tuition for the MSc Maritime Law & Logistics pro-
gram for the intake 2018 is 18,500 Euros per year.
Participants who pay in full the tuition fees for both
years before the beginning of the program will bene-
fit from a 2,000 Euros rebate on the total. Your tui-
tion fees cover tuition and services, including most
course materials, on-campus IT services, and access
to the library. The tuition fees do not include travel
or living expenses.

* Graduates of other fields, such as industrial engineering, with significant components in economics and/or business, are also eligible. In addition to the above criteria, applicants from other fields will also be considered.
** Successful applicants need to be eligible for a student visa in the European Union if they are not a citizen of an EU country. Note that while the universities may offer assistance in applying for the visa, it remains the responsibility of the student to obtain the visa. Not obtaining a visa is not a reason for tuition fee re-imburse-ment.
