Firedevelopedatapartiallycomplete14levelmultistorybuilding.Afiregrewwithtemperaturesestimatedataround1000°Candalthoughstructuralsteelisestimatedtobecomeelasticataround600°Chowever,somestructuralbeamsweredeformedbutnostructuralfailureoccurredandtheintegrityofthefloorslabsweremaintained(constructedusinglong-spanlatticetrussesandbeamssupportingconcreteslabs)throughoutthefire.Thebuildingconstructionwasnotcompletedthereforecontainednopassivefire-protectiononthesteelwork.Thesprinklersystems&otheractivemeasureswerenotyetcommissionedandnotinoperation.Followingthefire,itwasobservedthatnoconnectionshadfailed.However,thereweredeformationsofboltholes,brokenboltheads,andsomeoftheconnectionplateshadfracturedalongthelengthoftheirbeamsbuthadstillmanagedtotransfershearappropriately,variouslevelsofdeformationobservedinsupportstructures,thosedeformations wereduetotensileforcesinducedduringcooling.Theestimatedcostofdamagewasaround£25m

Structuralanalysisfollowingthefireprovedthatfireprotectionforstructuralelementsareoverspecifiedandarenotrequiredasmuchasoncethought,fire-engineeringprinciplescanbeappliedtoreducethecostoffireprotectionandthereforecostofconstruction.

Thisbecameacatalystforsteelcompaniestocarryoutresearchinordertogainaneconomicalbenefitwhichhasshownthattheinherentfireresistanceofthiscommonstructuralframingsystemisfargreaterthanisdemonstratedusingstandardfiretests.

IntheCardingtonlargescalefiretestsitwasshownthatunprotectedbeamswhichwouldfailwithin20minutesforasimplysupportedstructureusingastandardfiretestcouldinfactsurviveofferingoveronehourfireresistance.Thisfindingnowunderpinsmuchofmodernstructuralfireengineering
