Charles Mozley was one of the most talented,versatile and prolific artists, illustrators, graphicdesigners and print makers of the post-war period.Born in Sheffield in 1914 he demonstrated aprodigious artistic talent from an early age andattended the Sheffield College of Art while still aschoolboy. His first solo exhibition, at the tenderage of nineteen, made him a local celebrity.

In 1934 Mozley won a scholarship to study at theRoyal College of Art and subsequently taught lifedrawing, anatomy and lithography for a short timeat Camberwell School of Art. He supplemented hisincome with commissions from London Transportand Country Life among others.

Mozley joined the Army at the beginning of theSecond World War and spent six years, initiallyworking in camouflage and then in militaryintelligence.

After the war Mozley became a prolific artist and amaster of many techniques. The commissions cameflooding in and saw him designing film and theatreposters (most notably for Alexander Korda’s film

An Ideal Husband in 1947), advertisements for Shelland BP and commercial work of all kinds. In 1951he painted murals for the Festival of Britain onLondon’s South Bank. He also made prints for theSchool Prints series and Lyons lithographs.

Mozley became increasingly in demand as a jacketdesigner and book illustrator, both in Britain andthe United States, producing work for most of theleading publishers. His work for the Folio Societyand Limited Editions Club of New York made himone of the most sought-after illustrators of the time.Between the 1950s and 1970s Mozley illustratedover eighty books, around thirty for children,including Black Beauty, Pinocchio and SleepingBeauty.

Mozley’s talent in the graphic arts has beencompared favourably with Toulouse-Lautrec’s.However, his heavy involvement in commercialwork, combined with his fiery temper andresentment of galleries, damaged his efforts toestablish a reputation as a serious artist and little ofhis non-illustrative work was exhibited during hislifetime. He died in 1991.

In the mid 1960s Charles Mozley met Abe Lublin, thegreat American print dealer. Lublin was touring Europesearching out artists who would be able to make printsfor the huge emerging American print market. Throughhis energetic and aggressive marketing Lublin had gonefrom struggling gallery owner to big-time graphicpublisher with his company Consolidated Fine Arts(CFA), registering $3 million worth of sales by the late1960s.

Lublin commissioned Mozley to make a series ofmaquettes which would then be editioned as lithographs.Although Mozley was paid to make the paintings, thetwo men failed to agree on the amount that Mozleywould be paid for the prints. As a result they were neverpublished and when Lublin's firm went bankrupt a fewyears later, the paintings found their way back toMozley's London agent, Edmund Newman.
