Etymology

7. Why does McCarthy NOT

explicitly state the protagonist’s

location? Explain the tone created by

his vague details on the exact

location.

8. Why did The Boy want to help the

burned man? Why didn’t the father

offer help? What does this show

about The Man’s understanding of

the setting vs. The Boy’s?

9. No names are given for any of the

characters. Suggest reasons why

McCarthy made this choice for his

novel.

10. Explain the significance of the

single bullet left in the revolver. How

does it contribute to a theme?

11. Describe the argument that The Man had with his wife and their different points of view. Why doesn’t the woman say goodbye to her son? What details in these memories stand out the most? What tone do they create?

12. Why does the father not go back

to search for the other boy? Explain.

What does this section show us

about The Man and The Boy?

13. “He’d had this feeling before, beyond the numbness and the dull despair. The world shrinking down about a raw core of parsible entities. The names of things slowly following those things into oblivion. Colors. The names of birds. Things to eat. Finally the names of things one believed to be true. More fragile than he would have thought. How much was gone already? The sacred idiom shorn of its referents and so of its reality” (McCarthy 89). Explain the importance of the quotation. Beyond tone, what do the DIDtLS reveal about the characters, setting, etc.?

14. Explain the significance of the orchard scene.

Examine specifically the details, imagery, and

symbolism.

15. Do The Man and The Boy believe they will live?

Explain both points of views.

DOOMSDAY SCENARIO REPORT – IN PARTNERS

Read and annotate the provided doomsday scenario.

Find at least 2 additional credible sources that either corroborate or

refute the information in the provided doomsday scenario. Print,

read, and annotate both sources. Create an MLA-formatted Works

Cited page!

Use info from all 3 sources (the 2

you found and the 1 provided) in

your final product

YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO…

Summarize your scenario with factual

info on the who/what/when/where/why/

how.

Determine the probability of your scenario occurring by

assigning and justifying a percentage of likelihood.

Identify your scenario’s fear factor by assigning and explaining a

rating of 1-10, with 1 being a sleeping puppy and 10 being a

murderous and caffeine-laden spider-zombie hybrid.

DISPLAY FINDINGS! (PRESENTATION)

Tech savvy students, create an Infographic to share your findings. Try using

Easel.ly, Piktochart, Infogr.am, or Visual.ly for help.

Tech phobic students, create a neat poster. Be sure your poster has a

thoughtful, organized layout. Be creative! Use color, rulers, mattes, 3D

objects, and more! Make wise, interesting choices. Integrate text and

images

Have a hard copy to turn in and be ready to share

out on Friday, September 29!

AGENDA

Investigating tone

DO: Analyze universal idea through tone and DIDLS.

HW: Quiz 2 on Thursday

Doomsday due Friday

LAST NIGHT’S READING

What shall we discuss?

INVESTIGATING TONE

Tone (author’s attitude) is our main concern this semester, and DIDLS is our trusty tool.

In order to analyze tone though, you need to know what he would have a tone about.

With your partners, look over the themes I shared with you, and ones you are tracking yourselves. Discuss the themes, and what universal idea (message) seems to be associated with it.

Don’t worry about DIDLS just yet.

ANALYZING TONE

Pick the theme that most interests you, and

find an instance of it in the reading so far.

This is where detailed annotations helps!

ANALYZING TONE

Based on your passage, determine what DIDLS is used, and what tone McCarthy has towards this theme.

Write this out as a claim statement in your journal.

Ex: In The Road by Cormac McCarthy, he uses determined details to convey a ruthless tone towards survival despite the odds to show that good people must endure to find meaning.

DISCUSS!

With your partner, discuss your analysis. Remember to:

Identify DIDLS

Explain how that DIDLS conveys tone

And what that means for the theme (ie what message is

McCarthy trying to send?)

FINDING THE BUNKER

Recap: What was life like for the man and the boy

before finding the bunker? (Between losing the cart and

finding the bunker)

FINDING THE BUNKER

Recap: What was life like for the man and the boy

before finding the bunker? (Between loosing the cart and

finding the bunker)

Reread pages 131-134 when the man and the boy find

the house. Have things changed yet?

FINDING THE BUNKER

What has finding the bunker done for the man and the

boy?

How is their life different?

What theme/universal idea is

at play here?

WRITTEN ANALYSIS

Based on your bunker discussion, you will write one paragraph analyzing McCarthy’s tone towards your universal theme. You will need to know:

The piece of evidence you will use, which shows

DIDLS

Tone

Universal idea (theme)

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26

BELL WORK: WHAT WE REMEMBER

Reread the man and boy’s conversation at the end of

last night’s reading (pages 174-5).

Why does the boy say “But I wont remember it the

way you do” (McCarthy 175)?

What about the old man will be remembered?

Is this universal or particular?
