Creative Arts
“What a wonderfully big start we have had to 2017 in the area of Creative Arts. We have successfully auditioned dance groups, choirs, instrumental groups and begun practising all the various routines and musical pieces.
I would like to introduce the Music teaching team; who deliver an hour of music to every student at Mona Vale Public School.
• Ms Hester Wright: who is in her fifth year at Mona Vale and is responsible for Junior and Senior Choir. Our choirs were successful again in being accepted to be part of the NSW ARTS Unit concerts at the Town hall and the Opera House later in term 3.
•Ms Yenny Huang: who is in her third year at Mona Vale and is repsonsibile for Senior Strings. Who like our fabulous choirs has been accepted to be part of the Festival of Instrumental music and will also perfrom at the Sydney Opera House later this year.
•Mrs Annie Woods: is new to Mona Vale this year and is an enthusiastic, wonderfully experienced music specialist. She also takes the regional choir and is looking to introduce some drama opportuntiies for our older students.
•Mrs Robyn Phelan: is also new to Mona Vale and has extensive knowledge of the Music syllabus and has been Head teacher of Creative Arts for many years before coming to us. Both our new staff bring with them a wealth of teaching and learning experience and I am so excited to work alongside them in 2017.
By now I am sure your children have talked about when they go to music lessons and I am sure it is a fun highlight of their week, whether a Year 6 student creating their own song on ukulele, a Year 1 stduent learning the violin or any student singing and dancing to so many styles of music.
Attached to this newsletter is an advertisement for an upcoming Cupcake Stall that the Band & String committee will be organising. It will be held on Friday 17th of March and money raised will go towards purchasing new instruments for the ever-growing instrumental program. Our instrumental program is well-known in the area as producing great muisicians and we are very proud of it. Our ensembles include: four concert bands, two jazz bands, three string esnembles, a percussino group and an orchestra. Please pop a gold coin in your childs bag on Friday 17th March.

Live Life Well
Turn Off The TV Or Computer And Get Active
• Set a limit on the amount of time children watch television or spend on the computer.. Too much screen time limits physical activity.
• On the weekend, live life instead of watching it on TV. Find a new place to hike, bike or run. When you hear “I’m bored” – think of something active to do.
• During the winter months, avoid allowing children to watch too much TV or play video games. Encourage active play, which builds social, mental and physical motor skills.
Why Reduce Television Time?
• Studies have shown we use less energy watching TV than sitting still
• TV influences the food choice of kids – Australia has a high rate of food advertising during children’s viewing hours
• TV replaces time a child can be active and enjoy physical activity
• there is an association between TV watching and being overweight
• 40% of children 5 – 12 years report watching an average of two hours or more of television or videos a day.

Presidents Report – Term 1 – 2017 Firstly, I would like to introduce myself as the new P&C President for 2017. My name is Conor Weule, and I am Mum to two children at MVPS in Year 2 and Kindergarten! When my son first started in Kindy I decided I’d like to put my hand up as a Class Parent. I wanted to be involved at school, both so I could become familiar with how it all works, and so my children could see how interested I am in what they do each day. This was really rewarding for me, so I decided to become involved in the P&C, last year filling the Treasurer role. As President this year, I would like to continue to work very closely with the school to ensure best use of our combined resources to continue to provide opportunities for our teachers and students to achieve their teaching and learning goals. With your contributions, we aim to complete the air conditioning for the whole school and provide much needed teaching tools and resources for our children. Through the Class Parent Network we will aim to keep you in the loop and provide opportunities to participate in Social and Events activities and other programs. We will also hold some daytime P&C Meetings which will include presentations from teachers on specific learning areas of focus, including Reading and Science. We will continue to support excellent enrichment programs including Band & Strings and Chess, and operate our Uniform Shop and Canteen with strong input and volunteer support from the community. Volunteering at Mona Vale has been a rewarding experience for me, and I would like to encourage everyone to find a way we can use our time or our talent to contribute. I would like to say a very big thank you to Mark Welch for the huge input he has given to the school over the past 4 years as President, and for all of the support he has given me to step into the president role. My best wishes and sincere thank you also to the following people who have left the P&C this year: Holly Hill (2016 Vice President), Anita O’Hart (Chess Chair), Trudi Seymour (Uniform Chair), Andrew Wood (Elected Member) and Anina Rich (Elected Member). Your contribution has been invaluable, and I hope we still see you at P&C meetings throughout the year! I am pleased to introduce the 2017 P&C team. I thank each of these people for stepping up to the challenge. They are making a commitment of time and energy in service of MVPS community. Please thank them with me! We still have a few vacant roles, so if you are interested, please get in touch. If you want to know more about the P&C or have any questions, please contact me on president@monavalepspca.com.au The next meeting will be in Week 8, Tuesday 14th March at 7.30pm in the school library. I hope to see you there!
