THE AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT USHERED IN A NEW WAY OF THINKING. THE OLD WAY THAT THINGS USED TO BE DONE WAS CHALLENGED BY WRITERS LIKE ISAAC NEWTON AND JOHN LOCKE. THEIR IDEAS WENT FURTHER THAN JUST THE SPIRITUAL. LOCKE EVEN SAID THAT PEOPLE HAD THE RIGHT TO CHANGE A GOVERNMENT IF THE GOVERNMENT DID NOT PROTECT THEIR BASIC RIGHTS. PEOPLE BEGAN TO QUESTION THE EXISTENCE OF GOD. MONTESQUIEU SAID THAT POWER SHOULD NOT BE IN THE HANDS OF A FEW AND THAT POWER SHOULD BE SEPARATED INTO 3 GROUPS, EXECUTIVE, JUDICIAL, AND LEGISLATIVE.

People in America read these ideas. Religious leaders became less strict. New political attitudes were created by these new ideas. A direct effect of the Age of Enlightenment can be found in the opening of the Declaration of Independence. The opening is an application of John Lock’s ideas.

THE SOUTHERN COLONIES

Southern Colonies

Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia

These people came to make money.

I Because they had large plantations they needed workers to work the land which led to bringing of large number of slaves to work for them. James Oglethorpe tried to develop Georgia as a utopian experiment.”

Cash crop plantation system.

They were not as healthy-many died from typhoid, malaria, yellow fever.

Usually did not come with families, single men.

The southern colonies

•The Age of Awakening was a major rebellion against the strict teaching of the church. The new faiths that came out of the Age of Awakening were much more democratic. No one denomination dominated an area. There was greater equality and more tolerance about differences. More and more new Protestant denominations were formed. During this time people saw themselves as being more capable of taking care of themselves. Another effect of the Great Awakening was the growth of the notion of state rule as a contract with the people This was the first major event that all the colonies could share.
