In a first for Taranaki over Easter weekend there will be Ghost Nights in the Taranaki
Maize Maze. This is an R16 event designed to cater to late teens and adult thrill
seekers. Ghost Night will be a super fright night, ID
will have to be shown prior to admission. The
experience will require great nerves and will be best
undertaken in groups, first hurdle is the cemetery, if
you can handle that then move on to the
super fright stations if you dare, passing
coffins, skeletons, spooky shed and many
other terrifying spots. There are sounds
and sights that will freeze your blood. Then
you will reach the tower and you will find
more.........
The Inglewood Lions have run the ‘Maze’
for nine years on 4 different sites with this
year being the first time on this Upper
Egmont Road site and the largest yet at 3.2
hectares, 600,000 maize plants intertwined
with 3.5 km of tracks, plus there is a tyre maze, mini maze, cube puzzle with
free pony rides and bouncy castle on special days. Over the years 50,000
people have gone through the gates, turning over $250,000. The community has
benefited with funds raised going to sports people, speech contests, and youth
travel, Taranaki Hospice, Jaws of Life, Search and Rescue, Fire Brigade, Rescue
Helicopter. There has been Jazz Bands,
Champagne Breakfasts, glow sticks.
The first year the Lions made $2200 and thought
they had done well as it rained and snowed and
most of their time was spent sitting under a leaky
shelter, now there is a container for storage and a
new office/shop. The Taranaki Maize Maze has
proved itself to be a major part of Taranaki’s
entertainment scene thanks to our own Inglewood
Lions willingly giving up untold hours over the
spring and summer.
Proceeds this year go towards Child Cancer.

Shade-by the River
I was driving to work the other
morning. I was travelling just under the
speed limit, minding my own business,
and then I spotted a little black car
arriving almost on my back bumper. I
hate tail-gaters! I did what I usually do
in those circumstances; I eased back
on my speed. If they are travelling that
close, I want it to be at a reasonable
speed.
I kept one eye on the mirror and saw
her – yes, it was a ‘her’, and she hadn’t
taken the hint she was still very close.
And to add to my discomfort she was
turning around in her seat to talk to
someone in the back. [That someone
turned out to be a child.] Coming to a
straight bit of road I planted my foot
and thought I would leave her, but she
followed me and as she looked up
from the back seat, she hit the curb
and swerved out towards the centre
line. Thankfully she corrected, and
continued to follow.
We reached Coronation Ave and the
50 kph speed restriction. I would feel a
bit safer now as I slowed down. I
couldn’t believe my mirror when I
checked; the black car was some fifty
metres behind and held that gap all the
way down to the lights.
Makes you think doesn’t it?
Editor’s Comments
The Inglewood RSA is proposing to
become independent and the club already
has the assistance of the Inglewood Lions
for the running of the Inglewood
ANZAC Dawn Service and the numbers
joining as community members of the
local RSA demonstrates the level of
support for their stand.
The ever increasing numbers of the
community at the Inglewood ANZAC
Dawn Service and Poppy Day shows the
special place held by ANZAC and RSA in
this community.
On a sad note, our deepest sympathy
goes to family of Tim Chadwick, tragically
killed in an accident at Pio Pio. A talented
and respected teacher and community
member whose contribution and
presence will be sorely missed.

Inglewood Smallbore Rifle
Club (Lou Donnelly)
The Winter Olympic Games are now
over, were you intrigued by the mind
games involved in the Biathlon events
and the importance of good shooting?
Perhaps you would like to have a try, but
can't or don't ski? Well, the Inglewood
Smallbore Rifle Club could be just the
place for you. We use similar .22 target
rifles, but our indoor range is only half
the length at 25 yards, as opposed to the
Olympic 50 metres. Our targets
therefore are smaller and scoring of
them is done differently. All our indoor
shooting is done from the prone
position and being indoor you don't have
to compete with the wind, rain or
snow!!!
Club season is just starting now, every
Monday night, 7.30 pm at our range on
Elliot St, between the swimming baths
and T.E.T. Stadium. Both men and
women are welcome, all rifles,
equipment and tuition in the safe use of
firearms is provided.
Like to have a try, come along any
Monday night. Think this could be the
sport or hobby for you, same thing,
you're most welcome to come and have
a shoot.

Hearing Dogs’ new Trainer, Yorkshire girl Nikki Hawkes
had been to New Zealand on holiday 4 years ago, so when
Clare McLaughlin approached her to take up a full-time
position at New Plymouth, she couldn’t pack her bags fast
enough to get back here! ‘It was minus 16 degrees when I
left home,’ says Nikki ‘so as you can imagine, the idea of
catching the end of the New Zealand summer is pretty
appealing.’
Nikki has spent the last 5 years at Hearing Dogs in the UK –
including 2 years working with Guide Dogs training dogs for
deaf and blind people, 2 years working on a pilot
programmed training dogs for deaf 6-11 year old children,

be an opportunity for people to see the facilities.

It has been 19 years since the
closure of M Zemba Ltd in 1991.
Former staff members reunited
at a get together at ‘Sun World’
in New Plymouth of old friends
and workmates organised by Lyn
Bocock. Although they are now
spread far and wide Lyn and her
helpers attracted ex staff from
Australia and all parts of the
North Island. 86 arrived for a
midday meal and many old tales
were told.
Zemba’s operated in Inglewood
for 44 years, with a work force
averaging 48. The factory
produced a weekly average of
almost 5,000 pairs of pyjamas
(One wonders where they all
went). Zemba’s was not the
biggest factory in New Zealand
but possibly the biggest
manufacturer of pyjamas.
One big challenge from a
Woolworths buyer was to
produce 50,000 pairs in 6 weeks,
these were for a special sales
line, this challenge was accepted
with certain modifications and
the staff succeeded in meeting
the deadline by producing
10,200 for each week of the first
4 weeks and comfortably
managing the balance.

Kerrin Krook is the feature artist in the
next exhibition.
She has been painting for 10 years, earlier
works were influenced by other artists, she
now enjoys using all types of media.
Recently works have taken on a style of
there own with her work is becoming more
original. What Kerrin mostly enjoys about
painting is seeing a painting emerge from a
blank canvas. Kerrin is not constrained by
any one style or subject matter and enjoys
the freedom which that brings.
You are welcome to join Kerrin to preview
her exhibition and for nibbles and
refreshments at the Fritz Reuter Gallery on
Friday 9 April at 5.30 pm.
