Success through scholarships

• Apply for scholarships, you would be surprised at how many people overlook these opportunities because they believe they will not get the scholarship

• I have received over $25,000 of RMIT scholarships in four years just by being a rural student

• Rural Grant – a scholarship of up to $5000 for students who demonstrate they are from a rural background and need monetary assistance in order to achieve their tertiary goals

• Study support scholarship - $2500 per year, for each year of the degree. A scholarship available to all students If you are experiencing financial difficulties and/or at a disadvantage during your education, this scholarship could assist you with your study costs.

• Centrelink? ($500 per fortnight, $1000 at the start of each semester)

How to apply for/get a scholarship

• Not all scholarships are not for the best of the best or academic achievements, there are a range of scholarships available. The whole point of a scholarship is to assist people achieve their goals and recognise and support people who wish to achieve a goal

• It’s very easy

• Don’t rush applications, take your time, fill them out thoroughly and check you have met every requirement or submission (supporting information or documents are often required with a successful submission)

• Be aware of what's available to you through your particular university. Most universities have scholarship offices/departments and loads of online information.

• Covering letter always helped me (well thought out and explaining why you need the scholarship. It should be a professional document, not a sop story)

Final thoughts…

• It’s worth it. Consider it a positive investment in your own future. Or in a parents case, your child's future. Nothing worth having comes easy.

• It’s not just studying and managing living away from home. It’s a life changing experience.

• You will learn much more through the entire journey than just gaining a degree
