The Office of Residence Life collaborates with other offices to facilitate students' successful adjustment to and transitions

through their collegiate experience. We try to provide a safe and supportive environment

promoting academic success, personal development, involvement in campus life, and

understanding of intercultural issues. We support the University's commitment to build

citizen leaders for the future.

ACADEMIC ADVISING

O First Year Advisers serve as the primary academic adviser for all first year students who live in their building. This responsibility not only creates a working relationship between academic affairs and student affairs, it, most importantly gives staff members an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with almost every first year student who lives in the building.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF RESIDENCE LIFE

Assistant Directors of Residence Life are a mid-level position that serve primarily as supervisors of full-time and graduate-level staff. Assistant Directors have 3 years + post-Masters experience

Assistant Directors are a part of Miami’s Central Staff team and help provide direction for the entire department

Included in the Assistant Director positions are a number of collateral and liaison assignments that oversee internal processes within the department and across campus

First Year Adviser

The First Year Adviser is a live-in master's-level professional who is responsible for the operation of one residence hall, housing between 140 and 350 first-year students. This full-time professional serves as both the hall director and the academic adviser to first year students living in the residence hall.

The position First-Year Adviser reports to an Assistant Director of Residence Life. Depending on the size of the residence hall, some First Year Advisers supervise a graduate student; called the Assistant First Year Adviser.

STUDENT AFFAIRS IN HIGHER EDUCATION (SAHE)

Our Master of Science and Ph.D. programs include comprehensive curricula and a variety of practical experiences to fully prepare students for the student affairs profession.

The SAHE faculty and student affairs practitioners work cooperatively with students to design opportunities that allow for the pursuit of specific interest areas.   

We characterize the in-class and out-of-class environment of the program as a “community of scholars”: students and faculty collaborating to create, understand, and apply knowledge to help you develop a professional identity.   

Graduate Assistantships Graduate Assistantships in the Office of

Residence Life provide experience with staff supervision, training, and evaluation. You will develop time management, presentation and group facilitation skills. This position enables you to advise student groups and holistically educate students through individual and group interactions in a challenging and supportive environment.

Graduate Assistantships Assistant First Year Adviser serves as both

assistant hall director and academic adviser to first year students in a residence hall of 250-380 residents.

Graduate Resident Director serves as the hall director of second year students in a residence hall of 85 – 350 residents.

The Commuter Center Graduate Adviser is responsible for the overall administration of the Commuter Center and serves as the academic adviser to first year commuter students and the Evans Scholars.

Graduate Assistantships The Graduate Assistant for Living Learning

Communities and Academic Advising serves as the primary academic adviser for a cohort of approximately 70 first year students, as well as works with 4-5 Living Learning Communities [LLCs].

The Graduate First Year Adviser oversees the administration of a small, first year residence hall (approximately 60-75 residents) and develops a residential environment that fulfills the goals and objectives of Miami University and the Office of Residence Life. This graduate student serves as both a hall director and an academic adviser to first year students living in the residence hall.
