hat a wonderful year this has been as the Butterfly Project continues to soar! Duringthe2012-13schoolyear,thenumberofparticipantsintheButterflyProjectWorkshopsmorethandoubled,havingpresentedtheWorkshoptoover3,200participantsfrommorethan20differentschoolsandotherorganizationsinthegreaterCharlottearea.Asofthedateofthisnewsletter,almost1,200participantsarealreadyscheduledtoattendaWorkshopduringthe2013-14schoolyear(seebelow).Throughasuccessfulmarketingcampaign–andmoreimportantly,byenthusiasticwordofmouth–theinterestinthisprojectcontinuestogrow.
Anticipatingthegrowthandtremendousneedforadditionalvolunteers,theButterflyProjectCommitteesuccessfullysecuredaCommunityImpactFundgrantfromtheJewishFederationofGreaterCharlottetodevelopandpresentaseriesoftrainingworkshopsfornewvolunteerrecruits.OurJanuary2013VolunteerTrainingWorkshopwasattendedby62people.Sincethattime,we’veaddedanother10volunteerstoourlistandhavehadseveralin-depth“mini”trainingsessionsfocusingoneachofthecomponentsoftheWorkshop.Alwaysneedingandwelcomingnewvolunteers,wewillbeofferingthesetrainingsessionsregularlyinthefuture.Wearealsointheprocessofcompletingashortfilm,fundedbythesameFederationCommunityImpactFundgrant,whichwillhelpourdedicatedCharlottesurvivors,IrvingBienstockandSulyChenkin,presenttheirfascinatingstoriestoworkshopparticipants.
Looking forward, we plan to install our newly completed butterflies to the next wing of the Children’s Holocaust Memorial Sculpture in the Margaret & Lou Schwartz Butterfly Garden during the spring of 2014! Wearedrawingupplanstocreateapermanentdonorsign,addinspirationalquotesandmakeotherimprovementstothegardenareaatthattime.WehaveestablishedanendowmentfundwiththeFoundationfortheCharlotteJewishCommunitytosupporttheprojectandarecommittedtogrowingthatendowmentinordertohelpsustaintheWorkshopsovertime.Wewillbeginthefundraisingforthegardenandendowmentenhancementsshortlyandaskyou,ourwonderfulpastsupporters,toconsiderasignificantgifttoenabletheseimprovements.Withyourpasthelp,wehavebeenabletoaccomplishsomuchintheseshortthreeyears,andlookforwardtoexceedingyourexpectationsinthefuture.
