Greek:

– “meta” – to change

– “morphic” - form

Metamorphic Rocks

• Igneous, sedimentary, and even metamorphic rocks may be transformed by heat, pressure, and/or chemical reactions into metamorphic rocks.

• Metamorphic rocks may change into other kinds of metamorphic rocks.

• Metamorphic rocks may be remelted and become igneous rocks.

• Foliated – from Latin “folia” meaning leaves as in pages of a book.– Bands or stripes are

visible on the rocks

• Nonfoliated– No bands or stripes

• Foliated Rock – minerals are arranged in stripes, bands, or wavy lines. The mineral crystals are usually flat and line up with each other.

• Nonfoliated Metamorphic Rock-– Made of only a few minerals which are not arranged in

bands or stripes.
