Ballan teenager Jackson Hammond sought refuge from Victoria’s heatwave by gliding along the Murray River in record-breaking time. Competing in the junior section of the Southern 80 ski race near Echuca earlier this month, the 16-year-old smashed a record that had stood for eight years, covering 80 kilometres in a little more than 33 minutes. “I’ve been racing since I was eight and I still get that adrenalin rush every time,’’ Jackson says. The year 11 Mount Clear Secondary College student says he tries to get out on the water at least once a week. \ PRISCILLA MOCA

council makes call for mobile coverageBLACKWOOD
Poor mobile coverage is hampering Blackwood CFA’s e orts to respond to res as Moorabool council leads a bid for ‘‘blackspot’’ funding.
CFA volunteer Tom Pywell said the Blackwood brigade had pushed for a solution to the area’s patchy mobile coverage “20 times in the past 20 years”.
Residents hope the town, identi ed as a high- re risk area, will receive funding under a $100 million federal government mobile coverage program .
“Our paging system only works one way, so we can’t report, change or upgrade emergencies without having coverage,” Mr Pywell said.
“It’s a high-level tourist town over weekends and summer. ere’s a lot of bushwalkers and trailbikers heading to the state forest who have no coverage.”
Byres Road resident Noelle Shader said she o en saw people parked outside her house trying to use their mobile phones.
“It’s a nightmare most of the time. We’re the outcasts out here,” Ms Shader said.
“I hardly use my mobile phone as there’s no point. To reach me up here, it’s always on the landline.”
Mayor Paul Tatchell toured Blackwood, Dale s Creek, Greendale, Darley, Morrisons and Ballan last week, experiencing the poor coverage rst-hand.
“ ere’s blackspots all over the place and it’s hampering business,’’ he said.
‘‘You can’t just drop what you’re doing and drive to the middle of nowhere to make a call.
“I can’t believe we just built this world-class re refuge at Blackwood, and if you want to make a phone call out there you may as well use a toaster.”
Reverend Darrell Couch , who holds services at All Saints Anglican Church in Blackwood, said he could never get reception when he visited the area.
“It’s impossible,’’ he said. ‘‘If emergency services sent out a text message, no one would get it.”
Cr Tatchell said improved infrastructure would make Moorabool more attractive to mobile service providers and increase competition.
Submissions to the federal government mobile coverage program close this Friday . \

Sixteen Melton teenagers, including Mitchell Precie , Charlee Stemp and Jacob Steele (pictured), were among more than 600 competitors at last weekend’s Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria urban junior championships in Swan Hill . Melton CFA junior co-ordinator Trevor Rickards said four local teams travelled to the event: two under-14 teams and two of under-17 s. “They worked with hoses to hit a target and worked to get water out of the ground,’’ he said. ‘‘They practise every Wednesday and compete in competitions across the summer.” Mr Rickards said the junior brigade helped develop the re ghters of the future. “Five or six of our juniors are almost 17 and they are doing a recruitment course with the seniors to transition over. ” \ TM

waiting for repairs puts tenants in a fix
MELTON
New research data reveals many tenants are waiting up to two years to have repairs carried out on their houses, but they don’t speak up for fear of being evicted.
at is a key nding of Home Sweet Home, a community legal centre report looking at standards of rental accommodation for low-income earners in the west.
According to Brimbank Melton Community Legal Centre managing lawyer Stephanie Tonkin, it is “appalling” that tenants have to wait so long for repairs on rental properties.
A separate Brimbank Melton CLC report , to be released next month, reveals the level of rental stress and homelessness is signi cantly higher in the north-west than the rest of metropolitan Melbourne.
Home Sweet Home recommends harsher nes and penalties for landlords who shirk maintenance responsibilities.
A total of 100 tenants – mostly people experiencing nancial hardship or newly arrived migrants – were part of the study, which found renters were o en unaware of their rights. More than 70 per cent needed one or more repairs to their property .
Ms Tonkin said more needed to be done to empower tenants to take their complaints to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
“We don’t believe clients and their families should be living in appalling conditions,” she said. \

member said. “Labor Party games are being played in the Liberal Party.”
Mr Collier, who withdrew as candidate for McEwen for last year’s federal election for family reasons, told the Weekly he would not stand for the state seat. But he would not be drawn on claims he had been told not to.
“I decided that right now is not the best time for my family, and we decided not to compete this time around,” he said. “Of course, I seriously considered it and genuinely would have liked to contribute.’’
Mr Collier said he hadn’t heard claims of key Liberal Party members bad-mouthing him in the community.
Sources said Sunbury resident Adrian Lodders had been approached to stand, but he declined, saying Mr Collier was the best candidate.
‘game-playing’ behind LIBS’ pre-selectionSTATE ELECTION
Local Liberal Party identity Ben Collier has been advised not to stand for the new seat of Sunbury, according to some party members.
e party has extended pre-selection for November’s state election a er receiving no nominations by the original deadline.
Multiple party members, who asked not to be named, said nominations for the seat – which includes Sunbury and Diggers Rest – closed on February 14.
ey said the local branch expected Mr Collier to stand, but he had been discouraged by key Liberal powerbrokers.
ey are believed to have told other local party members that Mr Collier could not stand in Sunbury because of fallout from the 2013 federal election.
“Ben is the only one who could win the seat and defeat [Labor candidate] Josh Bull ,” one
In the Macedon electorate, which includes Toolern Vale and Blackwood, former upper house member Donna Petrovich looks likely to be the Liberal candidate. Ms Petrovich,
who stepped away from State Parliament last year for an ultimately unsuccessful
tilt at the federal seat of McEwen, was the only name released at the close of nominations on February 14.
But sources said Ms Petrovich wasn’t among those standing for the
seat when nominations originally closed on February 7. “ ere was then
a campaign to get Donna to stand and the other two candidates were convinced to drop out on the Friday and Donna then put her nomination in.”
Ms Petrovich said she took her time making her decision and wanted to make sure it was the right move for her and the party. \

population boom, rise in crime prompt push for 24-hour police stationBALLAN
Residents want Ballan police station open 24 hours a day, claiming a population surge means crime is starting to “rear it s ugly head” in the town.
Ballan resident Jane (not her real name) said a neighbour recently had to call Ballarat police to nd her teenage daughter a er she le the house at 3am.
“It takes them at least half an hour to get here, and once they arrived she was already home,” she said.
“What a waste of resources. ey’re not there when we need them, and we can’t a ord to wait until it’s critical.”
It takes police 18 minutes to reach Ballan from Bacchus Marsh and 25 minutes from Ballarat. Residents say gra ti, vandalism and hoon behaviour are all on the rise.
According to a 2013 Moorabool council report , Ballan’s population is about 3 500 and expected to reach 4090 by 2026.
Bacchus Marsh’s Inspector Brendon McCrory said it was clear that Moorabool was growing faster than other regions.
“At the moment, there’s numerous patches around the state that are competing for dwindling resources and police numbers.”
Residents of Caroline Springs, which
according to the 2011 census has a population of 20,366, were recently told by a high-ranking o cial they will never have a
police station sta ed a er dark. Superintendent Glenn Weir said
allocating sta to the station at night “would not be an e cient use of police resources”.
‘‘Our focus is on frontline services; we want our o cers out
on the roads,’’ he said. ‘‘People need to ring triple-0 if something happens at
night, not the police station.” Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said there
was a need for more police across the shire. “I’ve had discussions and put in requests to
stabilise police numbers in this area,” he said. “It’s fairly obvious there’s a shortage and our guys are heavily taxed in how far they have to travel. at’s part of the growth strategy moving forward – to keep police services in line with that growth.”
Ballarat East Labor MP Geo Howard said he was keen to engage with residents.
“It’s a matter of talking about their experiences and with the local police, and if there are generally agreed gaps in service, I can pursue this with the Minister for Police and Emergency Services.” \

council fights for threatened century-old treesMELTON
Melton council and local environmentalists are opposing the construction of a homemaker centre that would require the removal of century-old trees near Ryans Creek.
Town planners Hellier McFarland lodged a planning permit application for the bulky- goods centre in November.
e Federation Drive development, with 51 tenants and 1 520 car spaces, would be built in three stages.
e application is expected to be heard by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal a er the council did not make a decision within the required 60 days .
Melton Environment Group president Daryl Akers said he wasn’t against the whole development, with his concerns restricted to a small area of the site that includes 100 trees, 12 of them old-growth.
“ ere is a proposal to clear a small remnant red gum [and] grey box woodland beside a small reserve at Ryans Creek,’’ Mr Akers said.
“ e vast bulk of the land at this site is of little environmental signi cance. We have
no problem with the development, only the small area where there’s several century-old trees.” Mr Akers, who has made a submission to VCAT, said native birds including galahs, parrots and corellas used the trees.
“Melton’s creeks are now the only places where old trees of this nature survive,’’ he said.
“We have to protect old gum trees so people moving into Melton don’t ask, ‘Where are all the trees?’”
Council planning services manager Bob Baggio said the council wouldn’t support the application at the VCAT hearing.
“Council is concerned about the proposed removal of the existing trees, given their environmental signi cance and opportunities to integrate the trees into any future redevelopment of the site,’’ he said.
Mediation will be held between Hellier McFarland and the council on March 20, with a VCAT hearing scheduled for April 28. \

your voiceNEW AMBULANCE STATION ‘NOT THE ANSWER’(Weekly, February 18)
■ A new ambulance station in Melton is a fantastic improvement. But the fact is, there are not enough ambulances in the region to meet community needs.
A lot of time and resources is wasted by people calling an ambulance for non-urgent needs.
Melton and Bacchus Marsh ambo s provide a fantastic service. I salute them for having saved my life in the past.
All Victorian ambo s deserve fair pay and working conditions.
We need trained, quality ambulance of cers. I support the Code Red campaign and hope our ambo s get a fair deal.CR TONIA DUDZIK \ VIA WEB

DAY CARE AXED(Weekly, February 18)
■ The family day care service in Moorabool has been operating for 31 years and is required to operate within the National Education and Care Law Act.
The decision to axe this program has nothing to do with the “private sector” – it is all about money and council incompetence, and the council moving to a model where it operates only in its core business of roads and rubbish. What is next on the list to cut? Meals on
wheels, library, senior citizens, footy grounds, maternal health?
What about the shire staff, educators and local families who will be left high and dry, as there are few childcare vacancies in Bacchus Marsh.
In any case, low-income families will not be able to afford the high charges of the private sector.
The arrogance of our elected of cials to do this all in secret is appalling. Hope this all means a rate decrease for the next year.PAT GRIFFIN \ VIA WEB

sons waited too long: push for inquestsMELTON
The parents of two Melton men who died last year after waiting for ambulances have called for full inquests into their deaths.Steve and Jo Gibbs – whose son Matthew, 23, waited 16 minutes for an ambulance after going in to cardiac arrest on October 8 – and Julie Wilson – whose son Brodie, 18, waited 27 minutes for an ambulance to come from Sunbury after having an asthma attack on June 29 – made the plea at the opening of a new ambulance station on Friday. The parents confronted Health Minister David Davis and Ambulance Victoria chief executive Greg Sassella, demanding answers.“We need a full coronial inquest into the way the whole organisation has conducted itself,” Mr Gibbs said. “It’s appalling. We have suffered great pain in the way they have conducted themselves in this investigation. They need to be accountable and there needs to be someone independent looking into it.’’Ms Wilson said the new station was only a temporary solution and did not address the ‘‘real issues’’ that exist in the ambulance service. “The ambulance service is in crisis, the hospital system is in crisis and they are not fixing what needs to be fixed,’’ she said.“The key performance indicator is 15 minutes, and to me even that’s too long. My son waited 27 minutes.“Personally, I’ve had David Davis come to my home and sit and apologise to me for what happened to my son, but it’s only words.“He has told me that there is a truckload of money, but resources and money aren’t the problem. Then fix the system and pay the paramedics what they deserve to be paid.”
Late last year, paramedics said they were not ready to accept a 12 per cent pay rise offered over three years because the state government was trying to introduce ‘‘unacceptable’’ changes, including replacing them with less trained first-aiders in rural locations.Mr Davis said the government had moved to put necessary resources in place in Melton.“I’ve met with Brodie’s mum and spent some time with her ... this is a very complex case,’’ he said.
“In the case of Matthew, the response time was 16 minutes and the government
target is 90 per cent [response] within 15 minutes. ‘‘I understand there was significant intervention earlier and the triple-0 officer talked a number of bystanders through CPR, and there was also a defibrillation administrated at about six minutes.“I think that may be a case where the system worked well in terms of time and intervention, but sometimes with the very best will in the world and the most-skilled paramedics the results are not what I or the families want.” \

new station ‘not the answer’Melton paramedics say while the opening of a new ambulance station is welcome, it’s only covering up greater issues.More than 25 paramedics from Melton and surrounding areas used Friday’s ceremony to protest working conditions.“The opening of this branch is being ticketed as a big item for the town, but literally it does not represent an increase of services for Melton and the greater Moorabool community,’’ paramedic Aaron Riding said.‘‘Our workload is increasing at a much faster rate than our resourcing. We are in the middle of our enterprise agreement and the government and our management are not showing support.‘‘We are here to say it’s a smoke and mirrors campaign to cover up some of the greater issues.”
Mr Riding said local services were not keeping up with demand. “Four-hundred-and-sixty-five new paramedics have been put on [across the state], but 390 have left in the same timeframe.“At this time there are no more cars in Melton than there were a year ago, and in that time we’ve had multiple cases where they haven’t had ambulances available to them and lost lives as a result.“[Mr Davis] says he’s putting additional cars on, but they are not being utilised properly and there’s still times in Bacchus and Melton when there is no ambulance service available.‘‘We are seeking bipartisan support to fix these issues and look after the welfare of paramedics.’’ \ TM

Melton’s new ambulance station will provide better support for local paramedics, according to Health Minister David Davis.“Not only is it worth knowing that physical infrastructure is coming in the form of a new branch, there has also been an upgrade of night-time capacity last year and a capacity
more coverage, support for paramedicsupgrade in Bacchus Marsh,” Mr Davis said. “Starting on Monday, [there will be] a new peak-period unit providing additional coverage during the day in this branch.”The Melton branch will now have two 24-hour crews and one 12-hour crew. The new station includes rest rooms, offices,
a training room, lounge and a three-bay garage. A memorial plaque for former Melton paramedic Peter Watson was also unveiled on Friday. Mr Watson, whose family was present for the ceremony, was a paramedic for 31 years. \ TM

no word on date for broadband
DARLEY
Residents living north of Wittick Street in Darley are still waiting for high-speed broadband, with the National Broadband Network Company (NBNCo) refusing to con rm a service date.
Darley Neighbourhood House manager Anna Curry said the centre on Jonathon Drive was still waiting for an NBN connection promised last year.
“Sta came in around June last year and asked where they could connect it. When I said I wasn’t sure, they le and haven’t got back to us since,” Ms Curry said.
An NBNCo spokesman said the company’s strategic review, released last year, recommended the NBN be built using a mixture of technologies to deliver the voice and broadband services “faster, cheaper and more e ciently”.
Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said the community wanted access to the same services as the rest of Darley, Bacchus Marsh and Maddingley. Bacchus Marsh was the rst Victorian country area to join the network last year . \ PM

man in croc of trouble over reptilesCOURT
A Bacchus Marsh man has been convicted of illegally possessing more than 60 wild reptiles , including two crocodiles.
Jeremiah Debono last week pleaded guilty to all charges, a er a Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) raid early last year uncovered pythons, a saltwater crocodile, sand goanna and a dead freshwater crocodile on his premises.
Debono was ned $4 500 plus costs for taking the wildlife from their natural habitat and keeping them without a permit .
He must wait ve years before applying for a wildlife licence.
e presiding magistrate said that if Debono had pleaded not guilty, he would have been sentenced to a term of imprisonment, wholly suspended.
DEPI senior compliance o cer Mark Breguet said o cers also seized computers, phones, cameras and electronic storage devices during the search early last year.
“In sentencing the man, the magistrate noted that Victorians are aware that wildlife is under threat and the act manages the trade in wildlife in a controlled way,’’ Mr Breguet
said. ‘‘He considered the man’s actions to be a serious breach of this control .
“ e magistrate also recognised the need for the community to understand that this behaviour … would not be tolerated.
‘‘ [Wildlife] must be kept in accordance with a licence or in approved care for recovery or rehabilitation and must not be taken from the wild.” \

A koala who surprised Toolern Vale residents by drinking from a dam has died. The Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network reported on its Facebook page on February 19 that despite the best efforts of Tony’s Practice Woodend Veterinary Centre , the koala died from a twisted gut. “We fought very hard to save him, but he was simply too weak and sick for a recovery,” the post stated. Photographer Shawn Smits captured images of the koala drinking from his dam on February 4. “It was a good 30 minutes that it sat in the water drinking, not at all worried about me moving around.” \ TM

Speeding drivers and those using mobile phones while behind the wheel are being put on notice as part of a police crackdown on north-west roads.
North-west Inspector Simon Stevens said Melton and Brimbank highway patrol o cers had been conducting three operations across both municipalities since November.
e ongoing operations are funded by the Transport Accident Commission.
Melton police have been running Operation Ninja , targeting speeding, mobile phone and seatbelt o ences on 11 roads identi ed as having the highest levels of road trauma in Melton and Caroline Springs.
Since November 16, 319 people have been booked for 392 o ences, including 174 for speeding, 40 for not wearing a seatbelt, 29 for unlicensed driving and 17 for using a mobile phone behind the wheel.
As part of Operation Buckley , Brimbank police have focused on mobile phone use and seatbelt o ences on Ballarat Road, Western Highway, Melton Highway, Taylors Road in Keilor Downs and Station
and Main roads in St Albans. More than 100 drivers were stopped for 120 o ences including 56 for using mobile phones, 23 for not wearing a seatbelt and 10 for driving an unregistered vehicle. Nine unlicensed drivers were also apprehended .
Brimbank police have also been conducting Operation Cannonball ,
targeting the municipality’s eight worst areas for road trauma.
Inspector Stevens said all three operations were being conducted for the rst time .
He warned that police would show no mercy to those caught
doing the wrong thing.“ e impact of being involved in a
collision where someone is injured or killed is life-changing,’’ he said.
“Our role, in conjunction with our partners at the TAC, is to make the roads a safer place.

‘good deed’ lands a fineMELTON WEST
A Melton West couple’s attempt to hand in a stray dog has led to them being ned by Melton council.
John Micallef said he and his wife came across the chihuahua while visiting a friend in early December last year .
“ ey had this chihuahua on the property which wasn’t theirs,” Mr Micallef said .
“ ey wanted to bring it into town to hand into the pound and we volunteered to take the dog with us.
“We got home late, and being a Sunday night we put her in the laundry to sleep.”
eir troubles began when the dog escaped the next morning.
“My wife was upset, so we spent the whole morning looking for her to make sure she wasn’t hit by a car,’’ Mr Micallef said.
“One of the vets we visited said she had been taken to the pound. We went to the pound the next day and found she wasn’t microchipped and that she would be put down. We decided then to keep her so she didn’t have to die.”
e couple paid a fee to have the dog released and registered it with the council.
ey didn’t think any more of it until they received a ne of $240 for owning a dog found at large.
“We thought we were doing a good deed and we are getting punished,’’ Mr
Micallef said. He is urging the council to
review the ne. “We emailed the council explaining the situation, but have now got a letter saying the ne is overdue.”
Council compliance manager Ian Stewart said records showed the
Micallefs came to the pound claiming to be the owners of the dog.
“At no stage did the resident tell council o cers that he was not the owner of the dog, or that he was planning to adopt the dog. If he had indicated that he was going to adopt the dog, we would not have been able to release the dog to him.
“ Under the legislation, council was within its rights to ne the resident .”
Mr Stewart said the council could look at reviewing the ne if Mr Micallef signed a statutory declaration declaring he did not own the dog at the time. \

FEBRUARY 25, 2014 \ MELTON & MOORABOOL WEEKLY 11
“Comedy’s easy to know when you’ve got it right because the audience laughs,” says a reflective Shaun Micallef of his bread and butter.
“It’s honestly the easiest thing to be proved or disproved. Drama’s a bit vaguer. Drama you
can get away with less or more because it can be grey. But if comedy’s not funny it’s dead, it’s nothing.”
On a Wednesday morning at ABC’s writing hub in leafy Elsternwick the veteran comedian is sitting in an ordinary office. At first it’s hard to separate Micallef from the swag of erratic and oddball characters that became his trademark.
Unmasked, Micallef is sincere, articulate, and self-deprecating.
He’s casually dressed and sporting a bushy beard set to be shed before he steps behind the news chair for the third series of his satirical news and current affairs program, Mad As Hell.
Micallef confesses he didn’t bother following news for much of last year and only came up to speed over the past few months.
“There’s a new government in. I don’t know if you knew that,” he quips.
“The nature of the show means that it needs to be topical and as up-to-date as can be. It’s recorded Tuesday night and goes to air Wednesday night. In the space of a day, hopefully nothing major happens.
“Mind you we’re not a real news service so it doesn’t really matter,” he laughs.
Asked to describe the series, Micallef says it’s a “squint and you’ll think it’s a news program sort of show”, declaring almost apologetically that he reckons it actually looks better than a lot of real news programs.
He suggests there’s no line he won’t cross for a laugh but concedes some topics covered in the second series made him cringe.
“There were certain harder jokes about the world which seemed mean-spirited when you put them in front of a live audience.”
The shift in thinking is one of the major reasons politics has become the show’s pet topic. “Which, let’s face it, never really deals with anything majorly important,” he says.
Micallef believes people like Tony Abbott and Bill Shorten are fair game.
“[But] if you’re gonna make a joke I think it should be about what they’ve done rather than who they are or appearances or anything. That is by and large how we approach things. I’m not sure we take cheap shots at people. Hopefully we don’t.
“Mind you, on a slow news day, why not,” he says with a chuckle.
The 51-year-old was born in Adelaide to an Irish mother and a Maltese father and was drawn to comedy.
“I was a kid who was attracted to comedy. I liked watching Jerry Lewis, for example.
“I’d then go and amuse my friends or my family by doing an impression of him or something that was like it. So I absorbed a lot of that.
“It’s hard to tease out any cultural contributions to it,” he says of his family life.
“Laughter was pretty highly valued. I had a funny uncle and a funny grandfather. Oddly enough, I got most of my approach from my father who was very straight.”
Micallef performed throughout his teenage years and at university but went on to become an insurance lawyer.
“I never really considered it [comedy] was a sensible career or even job. I certainly didn’t think I could sustain myself and an eventual family from it. Also, I don’t like actors. I don’t like the idea of being an actor.”
In hindsight, his late start would prove a blessing in disguise.
“I made all the mistakes I could have made and embarrassed myself by and large in my 20s away from the television camera. Then when I was about 31 that’s when
I turned up on TV.”Micallef ventured to Melbourne in the early ’90s when he first gained recognition as a cast
member on cult sketch comedy show Full Frontal, his most famous character the punch-drunk boxer Milo Kerrigan, still fondly remembered today.
A string of credits over the next two decades has included his beloved show
The Micallef Program, a stint on Sea Change as Warwick Munro, and hosting game show Talkin’ Bout Your Generation and The Logies. He’s also written two books, and even played horse trainer Lee Freedman in the movie The Cup.
“I wouldn’t like to have never had a crack at it,” Micallef says. “I’m glad I did it. I’d hate to think that I’d be sitting there bitterly watching television
thinking I could do better than that.”The father of three admits he couldn’t
have foreshadowed the heights his career would reach.
“That I’m a person on camera is a bit of a surprise and unusual. I’m not entirely sure that I would lead with that. On my tax returns I write occupation – writer. That’s what I am. I’m a writer-performer. I’m not a performer- writer. I’m not an actor.”
Micallef argues he’s not a workaholic but acknowledge finding it difficult to take a breather. There’s no legitimate hobbies to speak of, other than an appreciation of film, and spending time with family,
which usually consists of hopping in the car with his boys and heading down to a comic book
store in Coburg on weekends. “My kids make me laugh. I tend to laugh at stuff that’s got
nothing to do with comedy. Comedy is the re-creation of those moments that I have in real life.”
From the outside looking in you get the impression Micallef is happy with his lot in life.
“I know enough about the business that at some point you approach the end of what is your shelf life and you go do something else. When I’m no longer telegenic enough there’ll be a stage where it will be better for me to move behind the camera and produce and direct and write; which I do.”
That day seems a while off for now with the third instalment of Mad As Hell chugging along and a fourth
planned. “I’m always surprised when something lasts more than one episode,” Micallef jokes. “You go to a
third series and that’s gravy.” \rfedele@theweeklyreview.com.au

Thomas Stoian is just 12 years old but already has his career mapped out. The well-spoken youngster is keen to pursue
a career in local government and was appointed ‘‘honorary deputy mayor’’ by Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell during his visit to Myrniong Primary School on February 12.
Thomas has already got the political lingo down pat, sprinkling his sentences with words like “sustainability” and “infrastructure”.
“My interest came from watching the news every night and seeing the politicians arguing,’’ Thomas says.
‘‘I thought they’ve got some good points, and I also could see they had bad points.”
Thomas and his year 6 classmates were visited by Cr Tatchell after Thomas attended the February 5 council meeting and asked a question about crime prevention measures.
“I was nervous, but it was an honour to ask the councillors a question,’’ Thomas says.
‘‘It was answered, but I would’ve liked to have heard they were introducing more patrols and CCTV for the area.”
The mayor talked to pupils about democracy and how local government works.
“Council belongs to everyone. There shouldn’t be an age limit,’’ Cr Tatchell says.
‘‘They’re our future and it’s wise to introduce them to the system early and teach them how it works, what’s involved and how to make changes.”
Cr Tatchell described Thomas as a bright kid, ‘‘passionate about Moorabool’s future’’. “His school made a miniature model of Myrniong in 20 years’ time, and he was so keen and engaged. It’s great to see.”
Thomas said if he was elected to the council, his first move would be to help get roads in better shape.
“Sometimes when I have to go up to Ballan, the roads are a bit bumpy and not cared for.”
However, at his school there is little on the political agenda.
“We have our junior and senior school council, but there isn’t as much to talk about because our school’s got everything our students could want,” Thomas said.
‘‘There’s a great multipurpose shed, a canteen and good classrooms.” \

A salve for rateS painAGRICULTURE
A meeting between Moorabool’s rural advisory committee and councillors was the rst step towards easing rates pain, according to Balliang East farmer Chris Sharkey .
“Agriculture is the biggest contributor to our local economy, but you can’t have an industry that contributes so much yet isn’t listened to when it’s struggling,” he said.
Mr Sharkey said the council had been receptive to concerns about rate increases . He emphasised that farmers weren’t looking to subsidise their rates by pushing costs on to residential ratepayers.
“ ere’s no need to argue. We need to band together and tell the state government this can’t go on,” he said.
Mayor Paul Tatchell said the rural advisory committee presented good arguments at the February 19 meeting .
“We can’t have a one-size- ts-all approach, and the formula that values land on best-use is awed ,” he said.
“It’s easy to say, ‘Just ignore it [agriculture]’, but once that land doesn’t bear produce, how do we employ our people and keep Moorabool’s economy?”
Cr Tonia Dudzik urged the state government to fund a farmer relief rebate.
“If farmers’ rates go down, residential rates go up,” she said. “ ere has to be another way. I get people knocking on my door saying they can’t pay their rates … it a ects everyone.”
e council released a dra rate strategy on February 19.
e council is reviewing the strategy, which isn’t due to expire until
next year , to consider if “current di erential rate structures facilitate a fair and equitable distribution of rates and charges”.
Resident Margaret Scar recently established a Bacchus Marsh
‘‘community participation’’ group on Facebook to monitor local issues such as
rates.“[ e group will] discuss, for example, the
suggestion there could be instalments o ered on your rates,’’ she said.
‘‘ at won’t help when you’re already stretched to make ends meet, and there’s still money taken from the little you’ve got.” \

The front security door opens to the tiled entry hall, which is wider than most.
Immediately to the left is the carpeted
lounge room, while the main bedroom is next along the hall. The latter includes a wall-hung TV, a walk-in robe and a neat en suite with shower, vanity and toilet.
The informal living zone and kitchen acts as a central hub, with the large laundry and double garage with remote-controlled door in one direction, the three double bedrooms with built-in robes and renovated bathroom accessed by another passageway, and the covered entertainment area on the other side of the room. Even the dining and family room spaces can be interchanged, depending on
your preference. The user-friendly kitchen is equipped with a breakfast bar, appliance cupboard (in the original fridge space), pantry, stainless-steel appliances (Whirlpool underbench oven, Electrolux Chef four-burner cooktop, Fisher & Paykel dual-drawer dishwasher and pull-out rangehood), tiled splashback and skylight.
Ducted heating, evaporative cooling, ducted vacuum, NBN and Foxtel connections, solar panels, excellent storage, drapes, insect screens and security doors are other features.
Outdoor entertaining is made easy with the
pergola, while manicured gardens (including vegetable beds, lawn and feature fernery on eastern boundary), a steel garage or workshop and a shed further enhance the property.
The 970-square-metre block has the bonus of a second driveway that will appeal to tradespeople with its potential for another four secure off-street parking spaces for your boat, caravan, trailer or other vehicles.
The position will also appeal, with shops and cafes, schools, parkland and freeway access within a short drive. \

New Diggers Rest coach Shaun Sims says the club is primed for another crack at the Riddell league premiership a er a tough pre-season.
e Burras, 2013 runners-up, have made changes on and o the eld, with Sims taking on head coach duties a er several years as a playing assistant.
He says the changes are all for the better.
“Pre-season’s been going really well; good training numbers since Christmas. It’s exciting at the moment with a few new faces down at the club,” Sims said.
He’s hopeful of pulling on the boots himself at times this year, but his main priority will be coaching.
“It’s a decision we’ll make closer to the season.
“It depends on if we can get it running the way I’d like it to run, then I’ll consider playing. ”
A er ve years as an assistant coach at the Burras, Sims has an intimate knowledge of the team structure and playing stocks, with some changes during the summer giving him new options.
“We’ve brought in some real quality players .
“James Breen is another forward who kicked 90 goals last year … Patrick Jackson is a mid elder from the Essendon District
league … Matt Krul comes from Rockbank – so we’ve got some good new faces.”
e club has also lost a few from the grand nal side last year, with full-back Brett Caton, mid elder Craig Marshall and Nathan Richardson all departing.
Sims is expecting the club to challenge for the ag, with a few tweaks to the game style
the key to going one step further .“My expectation is to put the club in the best possible position at the end of the year,” he said.
“We had a really good season last year … losing the grand nal by seven points, which is de nitely
there to motivate some guys.“We’ll look to be a lot more
organised around the ball and commit a bit more to team defence.
“We were a very attacking team last year, and we’ll continue that forward of centre, but I think we need to tidy up our defensive acts.”
Diggers Rest will kick o its season on April 12 with a home game against Romsey. \

marsh win a finals tonicMCINTYRE CUp
Bacchus Marsh has tuned up for the GDCA McIntyre Cup nals series with a resounding victory over fourth-placed Sunbury United.
A er toiling away last week to register 184, Bacchus Marsh made short work of the Sunbury United batting line-up, taking just 43 overs to dismiss it for 84.
It was clinical right from the start, with James Bailey getting the early wicket of Adam Smith (1) when he hit one to Marsh skipper Scott Wake eld.
e visitors set good elds and bowled in disciplined areas to make run-scoring di cult for United. ey were soon rewarded when Mark Hooper joined the attack to prise out Greg Smith Hayes for nine. Hooper dismissed Steven Fogarty soon a er.
e only batsman to look remotely comfortable was Sunbury United skipper Mark McPherson.
It was no surprise that his dismissal triggered a collapse for the home side, with Ian Spiteri joining the attack to wipe out the middle order.
Spiteri sent McPherson (37), Leif Louwen-Skovdam (0) and Lance Watts (2) back to the shed as United found itself further in trouble.
Andrew Dickinson joined the attack late but ended up with the pick of the gures, wiping out the tail to nish with 4-6 o ve overs. Spiteri’s 3-15 was clinical, while Hooper’s 2-14 at the top of the order showed good signs ahead of the nals.
Wake eld says his players are feeling good about their form on the eve of nals but know they can improve.
“ e boys did their job on the weekend and it was a good win, but we’ve just got to keep winning and maintaining our form,” he said.
“I still don’t think we’ve put together that full game yet.
“We’ve bowled well or batted well but haven’t brought it all together.
“It looks like we’ll play Sunbury in the semi- nal. ough we’ve struggled against the top two teams, I think if we can bring our batting and bowling together we’ll be hard to beat.” \

VSDCA 2nd XIMelton’s second XI is on the brink of victory after a dominant day against Noble Park. After losing the toss and being forced to bowl, Melton strangled the home side’s order through 62 overs, taking regular wickets and keeping the runs to less than two an over as the home side was skittled for 115. Just three batsmen reached double gures. James Wheelahan was the pick of the bowlers with 4-35. In reply, Melton had moved to 2-46, with a win likely to elevate the Lions into a nals spot. \
VSDCA 3rd XIA solid day’s work with the ball has Melton’s thirds in a good position against Brunswick, after the Lions restricted the visitors to 189. Seven bowlers were used by the Lions, but the pick was clearly Toby Armstrong who sent down 27 overs for the day to collect 4-49. He got great support from opening bowler James Challis, who bagged 3-14 as Melton bowled Brunswick out in the 78th over. \
WSUCCAA most consistent performance has driven Eynesbury to a mammoth 388 on the rst day of its WSUCCA clash with Hoppers Crossing. After winning the toss and batting, all 11 players reached double gures for the home side, with Lee Williamson (54), Todd Newman (51), Scott Lynch (60) and Brett McGrath (60) leading the way. \
BOWLSMelton has missed out on the division 1 bowls nals after falling to a nal round loss to second-placed Fitzroy Victoria on Saturday. Melton took the ght up to the nalists, rarely falling more than a couple of bowls behind, but the class of the visitors eventually shone through as Melton went down 3-76 to 15-86. The loss means Melton nishes the season in seventh place, with seven wins, nine losses and two draws. \
BRIEFS
giesler, gale put melton in a winning positionvscda
Half-centuries from Melton skipper Nathan Giesler and middle-order stalwart Anthony Gale have pushed their side from a precarious position to one of strength a er the rst day’s play in the rst XI clash with Noble Park.
A er yet another top-order collapse, the pair came together for a 133-run partnership to give the Lions a chance of back-to-back
wins for the rst time this season. It wasn’t quite what Noble Park hoped for a er winning the toss.
A er the early loss of John Varchione (3), Melton consolidated through Michael Alexander and Alan Steenholdt.
But when both fell for 19 and Jesse Merlo didn’t trouble the scorers, Melton was staring down the barrel at 4-55.
Giesler continued his good form from the previous round and Gale
rediscovered some of his trademark touch to drag the Lions back to safety.
Gale made 75 and Giesler 76, each showing some of the batting prowess
that has guided Melton to the past two sub-district ags.
While neither man went on to register
three gures, late cameos from Nathan Allen (22) and Brad Jones (11) got the Lions to 236 by the close of play.
Remarkably, Melton can avoid the wooden spoon despite not registering a win between rounds two and 11.
A victory over Noble Park should see the Lions move up from the bottom rung of the ladder that they’ve occupied for much of the season. \ EM
