• Houses – Small: Usually 2 floors and very close

• Churches – Largest buildings; Cathedrals

• Market Place – Center of attention: large and crowded

• Streets – Narrow and unpaved

Jobs/Occupations• High Taxes• Most people were farmers• Church leader – powerful, well known

through the town• Blacksmith – 2nd highest authority• Some farmers Traders in 11th century

Rules/Law

• Freedom inside the town/walls• Under law of no lord unless in a castle

Danger/Hazards

• Houses close together -> Fire; roofs and walls flammable

• Crime – Very high, uncontrolled unless caught

• Disease – Epidemic; usually seen as a punishment

Landscape

• Usually on flat ground• Build also on high grounds• Sometimes built near a castle; Defense

Pollution

• Water – Full of mineral, brown to black• Sewage dumped in streets; sickness• Smoke from fires• Dead bodies
