Incoming Pre-‐Nursing Students: As we discussed in our ADVANCE orientation, we are requiring you to complete a medical terminology online (independent learning) course to familiarize yourself with key terms that will be frequently used in the classroom. This is the first year we have done this, so we are still working out a few of the logistical issues with the process, but overall, we feel that this will be an asset to you and the program long-‐term. One of your classmates was in the office recently and walked through the ordering process with us so this is a guide to how you need to proceed (you may need to zoom in to view the screenshots). First, you will need to go to the following website: www.jblearning.com/catalog/9780763797843
Once at this site, you should see the Medical Terminology Basis: Interactive Programmed Instruction book/course bundle on the screen. Proceed with adding the book to your cart.
Under the promotion code, enter LIPSCOMBMT as the discount code. The discount should drop the price to $64.70 from the earlier $82 price.
Continue with your checkout. You will then be asked to “register” as a new user.
Register using your Lipscomb email address. We don’t have screenshots of the registration process, but it is self-‐explanatory. Go in and enter your address (where
they will ship the book to, etc.). You will also need to create a username and password (remember this, you will need it to access the online course). You will see a screen with your discount applied and it will ask you to verify entered information and complete checkout.
Once you complete the checkout and pay for the book, the book will be shipped to you. Shipping will range from 7 to 14 days usually. So, it is good to go ahead and start this process to allow for ample time to go through the material.
When you get the book, there will be an online ACCESS CODE for the course material. Please go back to the www.jblearning.com homepage and click on the link to redeem your access code (link is located on right side of the page).
You will be asked to agree to terms.
Once you redeem your access code, you should be directed to your account page. You should see a page that is similar to the following screenshot (although this screenshot will have additional hyperlinks that you shouldn’t have and there may be on page right before this that requires you to “navigate to jblearning.com”):
At some point, either right before that last screen or right after you click the hyperlink, you will be asked for a course code. The course code is 923924. This
code is specific for incoming nursing students. Once you enter that code, the following screen should appear that looks like a typical online course content system:
This screenshot may be slightly different as “instructor” versus “participant”, but it will be similar. As you scroll down this page, you will see 12 Modules. The first module is how you use the online system. It is not set up as a standard lecture type of course as it is difficult to lecture on medical terminology. The best way to learn the material is to dive in and start learning the prefixes, suffixes, and root words. Each module will have activities that allow you to practice learning these key components. Each module also has a quiz. Please make sure you practice first as you only have one shot at each quiz. We are not grading you on this for a letter grade, but will be monitoring your success to see if additional study or resources are going to be needed to assist you upon your arrival in August. We’ve had a couple of students look at the modules and they thought students could complete a couple of modules in one evening pretty easily. You need to determine your own pace though. Please let me know if you have any questions or need assistance! Feel free to email me at Kimberly.Smith@lipscomb.edu. Also, customer service at Jones and Bartlett Learning can assist you as well.
