PRIME TIME BABY!: The Dodgers continue their nine-game
homestand (4-2) tonight, playing the finale of a three-game series
with the St. Louis Cardinals and looking to sweep the Redbirds for
the first time since May 18-20, 2012. In that May 20, 2012 contest,
which was also on Sunday Night Baseball, Scott Van Slyke hit his
first Major League home run. Tomorrow night, the Dodgers begin a
home-and-home against the Angels, with contests at Dodger Stadium
Monday and Tuesday, before heading down the I-5 for Wednesday
and Thursday night games in Anaheim.
Friday night marked the Dodgers’ first game of 2016
against the National League Central, a division they went
17-17 (9-8 at home) against when facing in 2015.
Los Angeles improved to 9-10 at home with last night’s
victory and is up to averaging 3.21 runs per game at Dodger
Stadium this year – the fourth-lowest home mark in the NL.
On the road, Los Angeles is averaging 5.44 runs per game,
which is the third-best in baseball.
The Dodgers have won three games in a row for the third
time this season and are seeking their first four-game
winning streak since taking the last four contests of 2015
(Oct. 1-4). Last season, the Dodgers went on winning
streaks of four or more eight times, with the longest being a
seven-game run April 12-19.
The first 15,000 ticketed kids 14 and under tonight received
a pair of kids’ batting gloves, presented by Kellogg’s Rice
Krispies Treats.
BIG RED: In his career, Dodger third baseman Justin Turner is
hitting .500 (6-for-12, all singles) against Cardinals’ starter Mike
Leake while Chase Utley is the only active Dodger to have taken
him deep (2 HR), despite a .143 mark (3-for-21).
WHERE RYU BEEN?: Dodger left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu will
make an important step today on his road back from May 2015
shoulder surgery that has kept him out since September 2014. Ryu is
scheduled to start and throw 2.0 innings for Single-A Rancho
Cucamonga at Inland Empire this afternoon at 2:05 p.m.
PLAY BALL WEEKEND: Yesterday, as part of MLB and the Los
Angeles Dodgers Foundation’s inaugural “PLAY BALL
WEEKEND,’ Yasiel Puig and Justin Turner surprised local
youngsters from the Venice Boys and Girls Club by joining their
game of wiffle ball on Venice Beach! ‘PLAY BALL WEEKEND,’
is a league-wide effort by MLB and all 30 Clubs to engage young
baseball fans and celebrate the continued support of youth
participation in baseball and softball.
Additionally, Major League players, coaches and managers
are wearing specially made PLAY BALL T-shirts during
batting practice and PLAY BALL patches on their uniforms
during this weekend’s games.
This afternoon, the Manhattan Beach Little League was the
featured Little League team as part of ESPN Sunday Night
Baseball and was hosted by Adrian González, who gave
the kids a tutorial on how to play first base.
During pregame ceremonies tonight, Dodgers RBI players
will officially begin the game with “It’s time for Dodger
baseball!” A Dodgers RBI player will also participate in the
managers’ lineup exchange.
As a part of Kids 4 Dodger Baseball, more than 1,000
students will receive a Dodger game experience during
PLAY BALL WEEKEND. Kids 4 Dodgers Baseball
provides L.A. area underserved youth with a Dodger game
experience courtesy of the Dodgers. Transportation, tickets,
a voucher for a Dodger Dog and beverage and a Kids 4
Dodgers Baseball T-shirt are included.
WHERE WE BELONG: After winning three consecutive games
and six of their last eight contests, the Dodgers remain at the top of
the National League West standings, a place very familiar to them:

Dodger infielder Chase Utley is quietly putting together a
stellar first half of the season, leading the Dodgers in
average (.291), on-base percentage (.395) and OPS (.841).
In addition to Utley, Adrian González and Corey Seager
are heating up, as each player is coming into tonight’s game
with a five-game hitting streak. González is hitting .400 (8-
for-20) during the streak and has reached base in 11
consecutive contests since May 3. Seager is hitting .385
(15-for-39) with four doubles, two homers and six RBI in
his last 11 games since May 3.
SPOTLIGHT ON ALEX: Dodger starter Alex Wood will make his
eighth start of the season tonight and his fourth at Dodger Stadium,
where he has been dominant. Wood’s 1.33 home ERA (3 ER/20.1
IP) ranks third in the National League while his .200 opponents’
home batting average ranks ninth. Overall, Wood has a ground-ball
percentage of 56.1, which ranks fifth in the NL.
Surprisingly, Wood has never made a start against the
Cardinals, his only appearance against St. Louis came in a
relief role on May 18, 2014 at Busch Stadium.
THE MEN IN THE ‘PEN: The Dodger bullpen recorded the final
out last night and has not allowed an earned run (one unearned run)
in its last seven games since May 7, striking out 25 in 19.1 innings
in that span. During the run, the ‘pen has limited opponents to a .164
batting average (11-for-67) and stranded all 12 inherited runners.
Overall, the Los Angeles bullpen ranks fourth in the NL with a 3.45
combined ERA (39 ER/101.2 IP), while limiting opposing hitters to
a .207 average (2nd, NL).
Louis Coleman retired the only two batters he faced Friday
night, marking his 10th consecutive scoreless appearance
(9.0 IP) since April 25. Coleman has stranded nine of 10
inherited runners this year and has allowed just 28 of 115
inherited runners to score in his career (24.3%).
Kenley Jansen retired the final batter last night and now
ranks second in the Majors with 13 saves in as many
opportunities this season (Jeanmar Gomez, 14). Jansen has
allowed just one run in 16 appearances (15.2 IP) this year,
good for a 0.59 ERA. Dating to Aug. 26, 2015, he has been
successful in 25 consecutive save opportunities and, with
155 career saves, Jansen is just six saves shy of Eric
Gagné’s club record.
Three current Dodgers have active scoreless innings streaks
longer than 7.0 innings: Clayton Kershaw (11.0), Louis
Coleman (9.0 IP) and Adam Liberatore (8.1 IP).
