PAPER PIECED
And
VARIETY
BRING IT ON!
We want to SEE!
JOIN US and ENJOY English Paper Piecing
Presented by: Carol Reigle Learn basic techniques of English paper piecing
that can be used on many shapes including hexagons, diamonds, pentagons, and squares.
The techniques can be used to make a single block or an entire quilt. A special part of the program fea-tures a special hexagon called a honeycomb. Lucy
Boston used the honeycomb to make her “Patchwork of the Crosses” quilt.
Learn about Lucy, her quilts, and find that English Paper Piecing is so much more than
Grandmother’s Flower Garden. Carol brings a power point presentation, samples and a fabulous project
for all to enjoy. Be there or be square.

Top ‘o the day to ya!
Have you ever considered traveling to a distant destination and along the way take in an amazing international
quilt show? Fellow BTCQ member Janet Kilgore did just that in 2012, she traveled to Ireland! In early June
last year, the National University of Ireland Galway was the amazing venue for “Quilter’s Village” created by
the SEW MANY PLACES team based in Spring Valley Illinois. The International Quilt Festival of Ireland
(IQFOI) is now celebrating a second year as one of the most unique, ground-breaking international quilt festi-
vals in the world. This event is the brainchild of Jim West, managing director of the festival. Jim is the
owner of Sew Many Places www.SewManyPlaces.com and the publisher of the free, quarterly magazine for
quilters called Quiltposium, www.Quiltposium.com with over 207,000 registered readers. The festival itself is
unlike anything the international quilting community has ever experienced. Taking place on the campus of NUI
Galway, the various buildings and food venues in this “Quilter’s Village” are renamed and designed especially
for quilters. Visitors will enjoy theWicked Thimble Pub, Fat Quarter’s Chocolate Shop, the Round Robin Café, the Quilter’s Square, Town Hall, Longarm Lane amongst other places in the village. It is an outside-of-the-box
concept that has been received with great acclaim! Besides the festival having a unique setting, the IQFOI
made history last year, bringing the largest group of international quilts together in one location in Ireland.
There are nearly two dozen themed quilt exhibits that allow visitors an opportunity to enjoy an interactive
experience, as their senses are fully activated in specially lit exhibit rooms. You can’t help but feel like you
are transported to another place, the moment you walk into each exhibit room.
The festival this year 2013 is June 7-9 , coming up very soon! Take a chance and go soon, or plan a trip for an
adventure next year! A visit to Ireland for the IQFOI is well worth it! Visitors will not only experience the
excitement of the quilt festival, but there are many tours that are just the right number of days to create
an incredible holiday. For more information on the festival, please email Jim@IQFOI.com .
Quilters will travel near and far for the best shops, classes and exhibits. Please consider taking the Guild
Bus Trips to Chicago and Grand Rapids this summer for a terrific exposure to grand quilt gatherings!
For a shorter journey, but still a feast for the eyes and an
adventure, consider a trip to the Quilters Hall of Fame in
Marion, Indiana. The Quilters Hall of Fame's mission is to honor
the lives and accomplishments of those who have made out-
standing contributions to the world of quilting. A museum and
gift shop await you with a calendar of events.
www.quiltershalloffame@sbcglobal.net for more info.
Or consider a drive to Lincoln, Nebraska to tour the
International Quilt Study Center and Museum. Housing the
largest publicly held quilt collection in the world ! Visit to enjoy
the world-class collection, first-class exhibitions, a virtual gal-
lery and experiences for all ages. www.QuiltStudy.org
Blessings on all your travels, near and far!

It’s hard to believe that SPRING is COMING by looking out the window these days but it will soon be time for spring cleaning. Carol Loessel is coming in April to help us
Start with Scraps! While it is the title of her book, it is also something we need to do with our stash from time to time.
Her lecture will be “Recipes For Leftovers” on Thursday, April 11. The lecture and trunk show will give those in attendance lots of ideas for using fabrics they have stashed in their sewing rooms. Carol will show and tell about quilts that have been made from all her “leftovers.” She will bring scrap patterns she designed and copies of her book for sale. On Friday, April 12 she will teach the Loessel Scrappy-Piecing Technique as we make the “Garden Snippets” table runner. This will be perfect for
decorating your table this spring and drawing attention away from the need for cleaning. Please join us for a wonderful workshop @ Lakeshore Baptist Church 10:00AM ‘til 1:30ish 4-12-13 Sign up now by contacting Sondra Sheppard by snail mail, use the registration form on the web.
Please make additional copies for all the FUN that Programs has planned for 2013! More workshops and classes are being planned, be sure to participate! See next page! APRIL Workshop cost is 35.00. Class minimum is 10. Max is 15. Sign up today. NOTE:
Because of the short processing time, full payment needs to be included with the registration form.
APRIL Workshop NEWS
Garden Snippets Table Runner Class Supplies
Carol Loessel, Instructor
Learn the Loessel Scrappy-Piecing Technique as you
make a (13 ½” x 36”) table runner.
Materials needed to make table runner:
Assorted scraps** of floral and solid fabrics (think the
colors of spring or summer flowers)
6” square of golden yellow fabric
(flower centers) 1/8 yard fabric for flower appliqués—
your choice of color
1/8 yard muslin
1 ½ yard green “mottled” fabric (for sashing, borders
and backing)
Thin batting: one piece 38” x 15”
6” square template plastic and
extra-fine tip Sharpie marker
Paper scissors
Water-soluble fabric marker
Sewing machine in good working order
Thread: neutral color for scrappy-piecing; green to
match green fabric
Basic sewing supplies, including a tool for turning &
small scissors that are sharp to the tips. (EX. Cord)
Rotary cutter, mat, rulers: 6”x 24”; 9 ½” square and 12”
square suggested
Paper and pencil for notes
The pattern for this project is in my book, Start With
Scraps. **You will need the pattern to finish the project
after the workshop.
**Books will be available for purchase ($8.95 plus tax).
**Preferably scraps leftover from previous quilt/sewing
projects. If you are buying
new fabrics, fat 1/8ths are great. Try for 10-12 different
ones.
Carol Loessel loves traditional quilts. Her quilt designs reflect this. She began quilting in the early 1970s when all that was being taught were traditional methods for traditional quilts. Carol has
accumulated quite a collection of scraps over all those years of quilting. This collection has led to some creative quilts, and after being told numerous times
“you should write a pattern for that quilt”, she did just that! She has three pattern series: “Recipes for Leftovers,” “Thanks, Grandma,” and “Scrappy Too”.
These patterns can be seen on her website http://carolsscrapquilts.webs.com.

We invite you to the library table to look over five new titles this month;
they will be available for check out that evening.
Library News
Gwen Marston’s Liberated Medallion Quilts features 3 of
our own guild members’ quilts! Here is inspiration to bend
the rules, play with color and make use of bits and pieces that
never found a way into other quilts you’ve created !
NEW! DVDS!
This year we hope to find some useful and inspirational video demon-
strations and workshops with experienced teachers in the business. We
hope you will let us know whether you find them worthwhile and whether
you would welcome more to the collection.
This month we are adding three series from The Quilt Show, from Alex
Anderson and Ricky Tim’s web magazine. Each boxed set of 4 disks
contains 13 one-hour programs, each program featuring a quilter on a
specific quilting technique, covering a range from machine quilting to
landscape design to hand appliqué to curved piecing—come and see!
As a long-time member of The Quilt Show, I can say that I have picked
up at least one tip from each program, even on topics of minimal interest
to me. Watch one program or watch all 13 in the series.
We need your help! In sorting and rearranging, we have found that many books are missing from the collection. We have the check-out cards for some and those members have been contacted. Please look through your personal library for any BTCQ library titles which may have inadvertently joined your books.
Stamped inside the covers, you will find Property of Berrien Towne & Country Quilters. Many of the missing books are classics, and some are out of print.
Please note: You may check out up to 3 items for one month. If you will not be at the next guild meeting, please arrange for someone to return your items.
Most welcome are your suggestions of titles to add to the collection (as well as donations of books/DVDs
you are no longer using)! We will continue to have some older books available for sale; money earned will
be used to purchase new titles!
Sincerely ~ Marion Huyck & Mary Sullivan

lustrated introduction to the techniques and tools of paper

The Ways & Means Committee oversees all fundraising activities for the
guild, except membership dues. Fundraising can be free or minimal cost to the guild and not very time consuming such as the Monthly Basket. For 2013, the Ways & Means Committee has spent no money and has placed no orders. We are gathering information on some ideas and we are looking for additional ideas and your input. At this time, we are not requesting a budget for 2013. We have some ideas that have been suggested by members: *Cookbook, *Guild Promotional and Marketing items – This would be items that we could print the guild logo and have our web site address on. We would then sell these items for a small profit. Some suggested items are Quilt rulers, large bags and note cards. I have also come up with some ideas: *Outside Promo-tional and Marketing items in exchange for advertising – We would ask large quilt or sewing related business to donate items in exchange for advertising in our newsletter or having a link on our website. If we are able to get these items free or for a low fee we would then sell these items.* A Quilt A Thon – Let’s get together and quilt. We could find a location and sew together. This would be much smaller than a retreat and with a small admission/table charge. *An Off Year Raffle Quilt – This would be a raffle quilt for 2015. This idea has challenges but we are quilters and what a wonderful way to share our love for quilting and generate some income for the guild.*Quilt Kit Basket – Once a year Guild would purchase a fabric kit and pattern and sell tickets, simi-lar to the monthly basket. For example: Laundry Basket Quilts has a “Pretty in Leaves” Fabric Kit with free pattern that the guild could purchase for under $45. As you can see we are now only gathering ideas. We are asking for your help in generating ideas and your input on the ideas already suggested.
Please put your ideas and input in writing and email me at or place in the suggestion box located on the exchange table at the meetings.
Thank you, Sara Lawrick Ways & Means Co-Chair
