Marcel Mauss, Ethnology and Politics : thé Gif)

The " Essai sur le don " ( 1925) is central in Marcel Mauss'work :first, it présents a new view of Durkheim's theory of social cohésion;second, it is the junction of his social and scientific préoccupations.Ethnography and politics go together. During thé 20's, Mauss is veryactive. At the professional level : publication of L'Année sociologique,création of thé Institut français de sociologie and of thé Institutd'ethnologie de Paris. Also in politics : participation to socialist andcoopérative movements, publication of many texts in Le Populaire andLa Vie socialiste, etc. His most important projects are at thé same timeintellectual and political : the first one is an ambitious work on thénation, and the second, after the publication of his text " Observationssur la violence ", a large reflexion on bolchevism.
