Almost four years into the imple-mentation of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) international-award-win-ning Provincial Traffic Safety Program (PTSP), the OPP continues to build on the successes of the program to pro-mote traffic safety on OPP patrolled highways and roadways.
Introduced in March of 2007, the PTSP is a proactive, intelligence-led approach to traffic safety that, initially, targeted “the big three” causes of injury and death in jurisdictions patrolled by the OPP; impaired driving, aggressive driving and failure to use occupant re-straints.
While the number of road fatalities was higher in 2010 (330) than in 2009, (310), there remains an overall 28 per
cent reduction in fatalities from the 2005-2007 three-year period prior to
implementation of the PTSP. The program has also resulted in
an overall reduction in year-over-year collisions and the personal injuries that result from these crashes. In 2008, the OPP investigated 74,196 collisions
in which there were 16,767 persons in-jured. In 2009, collisions were reduced to 69,560 with 14,779 personal injuries collisions. In 2010, there was a further reduction in collisions to 69,218 in which 14,737 persons were injured.
According to research conducted by the Canadian Automobile Associa-tion, distracting driving has become the number one road safety concern among Canadians. While texting and driving has been identified as a key problem, other driving behaviours that distract drivers are also a concern. The OPP, in its unwavering commitment to traffic safety will be targeting this is-sue by adopting distracted driving as its fourth major pillar of the Provincial Traffic Safety Program to ensure that
we can maintain our commitment to keeping Ontario roadways amongst the safest in North America.
OPP TRAFFIC SAFETY RESULTS 2010
“
”• Chris Lewis, Commissioner, Ontario Provincial Police.
The unprecedented reduc-tions we are seeing in the num-ber of deaths, personal injury and vehicle collisions across the province have earned us inter-national recognition as a world leader in traffic safety and we will continue to improve on our ability to save lives on our roads through enhancements to our PTSP.

(NC)—Many Canadians have come to believe that the best way to warm up a cold vehicle is to let it run. Af-ter all, it seems logical to us northern brave hearts that if everything outside the vehicle is frozen solid, everything inside the car will be petrified as well. The longer we let the car run, the faster it will warm up, right? Not so.
Contrary to popular belief, exces-sive idling is not the best way to warm up your vehicle in cold weather; driv-ing it is.
Consider these facts recently pre-sented by Natural Resources Canada in its new publication Lean and Clean: Best Practices for Fuel-Efficient Driv-ing:
• Some drivers let their vehicle run for six to eight minutes or more to warm up the inside of the vehicle. Letting a vehicle warm up for that long
only warms the engine. It does noth-ing for the wheel bearings, steering, suspension, transmission and tires. These parts can only be warmed up by driving the vehicle, which in turn, al-lows the ventilation system to heat the inside of the vehicle;
• By using a block heater for just a couple of hours on a timer, your ve-hicle will reach its optimal operating temperature faster;
• The faster your vehicle reaches that temperature, the more efficiently it will run;
• The average vehicle with a three-litre engine wastes 300 millil-itres – more than one cup – of fuel for every 10 minutes of idling;
You can find more helpful tips for fuel-efficient driving on the NRCan website at www.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca.
(NC) —When it comes to buying a new vehicle, there is a big difference between what you need and what you want. Do you really need an oversized pick-up truck for driving in the city or a seven-person passenger van for tak-ing the dogs to the lake? Or would a small, fuel-efficient two-door vehicle get you where you want to go?
You can save hundreds of dollars every year in fuel costs by choosing to buy a more fuel-efficient vehicle, maintaining it as specified in the own-er’s manual and adopting fuel-efficient driving habits. One quarter of green-
house gas emissions in Cana-da come from transportation, half of which are generated by light-duty vehicles.
For example, for every litre of gasoline used, a ve-hicle produces about 2.3 ki-lograms of carbon dioxide (CO2). As a result of the fuel combustion process, the aver-age car produces about three times its own weight in CO2 every year.
Choose a vehicle that fits your everyday needs in terms of size and power. Put some serious thought into your space and cargo needs. Pas-
senger cars with smaller engines tend to deliver better fuel economy than those with larger engines. Keep in mind horsepower levels have also dou-bled over the past two decades and the power available in subcompact cars today exceeds that of many midsize se-dans of 20 to 30 years ago.
Natural Resources Canada rates the fuel efficiency of all new vehicles in Canada every year. You can check out their scorecard at www.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca and have fun shopping.

(NC)—How many of us have ripped through a red light, soared past the slow poke in front of us or hummed along the highway not really concentrating on the conditions around us? All of us have driven this way at one time or another. These three driving styles – known as aggressive, rushed or average - can be dangerous, expensive and harmful to the environ-ment.
Did you know, though, that there are driving be-haviours that could keep you safe, save you money and help the environment?
Natural Resources Canada defines this type of driver as one who is focused on fuel efficiency at all times. Thinking about road safety and saving fuel and money, fuel-efficient drivers are known to accelerate gently, maintain a steady speed, anticipate upcoming traffic, coast to a stop with their foot off the gas (like driving for free) and avoid high speeds.
A study in Europe revealed that calm drivers use significantly less fuel than aggressive drivers who, the study found, consume 39 per cent more fuel in city traffic than calm drivers and only achieve a four per
cent savings in time. Also, students who took fuel-efficient driving lessons were shown to save about 25 per cent in fuel.
You could save up to $500 a year in fuel and cut your harmful greenhouse gas emissions by over 1,000 kilograms a year just by changing your driving behav-iour. Not convinced? Check out the NRCan website for more information at www.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca.
(NC)—When it comes to purchasing a new vehi-cle, you might want to consider buying the most fuel-efficient one that meets your needs. Follow these tips to help you make an informed decision:
• Do some research before you leave home – The Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) website, www.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca, lets you compare the fuel consumption of various makes and models of vehicles for a specific year;
• Check out the EnerGuide Label – Compare vehicles using the EnerGuide label that is found on all new cars. The label shows city and highway fuel consumption ratings and an estimated annual fuel cost for that particular vehicle. The values may not be perfect but they’re a start;
• Choose a vehicle that fits your everyday needs in terms of size and power – Put some serious thought into your space and cargo needs – do you really need a minivan when a compact would do? Passenger cars with smaller engines tend to deliver better fuel econ-omy than those with larger engines. Keep in mind horsepower levels have doubled over the past two de-
cades and the power available in today’s subcompact cars exceeds that of many midsize sedans of the mid-1980s;
• Choose a manual instead of an automatic transmission – Look for the transmission option that minimizes fuel consumption. Generally speaking, manuals will use less fuel, saving up to 100 litres a year;
• Two-wheel drive vs. four-wheel drive – The added weight and drive train losses you get with four-wheel and ‘all-wheel’ drive systems increase fuel con-sumption. Although all-wheel drive can offer better traction when accelerating under slippery conditions, it doesn’t assist in turning or braking; there is no sub-stitute for safe driving habits;
• Think about your extras – Accessories and power features can be a big drag on an engine, in-creasing fuel consumption. How much do you really need a sunroof or roof rack? Are they worth the in-creased fuel consumption and emissions?
Do your homework and watch your savings add up and your emissions go down.

Meritor WABCO Vehicle Control Systems has announced the availability of SafetyDirect at the 2010 American
Trucking Association Management Conference and Exhibition. SafetyDirect is immediately available for order for all North American commercial vehicle eets seeking to simplify delivery of detailed trend data as well as instant noti cation of vehicle safety and performance.
SafetyDirect allows customers to use as a single point of access to monitor and synchronize driver performance reports on brak-ing, stability control, following distances, collision safety system braking and lane-departure warnings for individual drivers as well as the entire eet. e comprehensive reporting includes event location, date, time, speed, odometer reading and safety trending data.
“We are pleased to launch SafetyDirect to our North American customers. We fully expect the system to revolutionize the way eets monitor report and capture safety data,” said Jon Morrison, president and general manager, Meritor WABCO Vehicle Control Systems. “By integrating data from our company’s SmartTrac and OnGuard active safety systems into Iteris’ SafetyDirect and lane-departure warning systems, it’s easier for eet managers to collect the information they need to meet and improve safety and business goals.”
SafetyDirect works by combining the technologies in Meritor WABCO’s SmartTrac and OnGuard active safety systems with their
partner Iteris’ SafetyDirect, an online application for analyzing data generated by Iteris’ data logger and lane departure warning system. e SafetyDirect application uses information transmitted from the vehicle by the eet’s onboard mobile communications system via leading telematic providers such as Qualcomm and PeopleNet.
Safety systems supported by SafetyDirect include: SmartTrac – a suite of active safety systems that can assist
the driver in maintaining control of the vehicle in response to an impending loss of directional or roll stability.
OnGuard – a forward-looking radar-based collision safety system that can detect objects in a vehicle’s path and automatically engage the throttle, engine retarder, and service brakes when it senses an impending collision thereby assisting the driver in avoid-ing rear end collisions.
Iteris LDW – a lane-departure warning system that uses a camera and onboard computer to track visible lane markings and detect when a vehicle dri s toward an unintended lane change.

(NC)—Just as weight loss experts recommend keeping track of everything you eat in order to lose weight, driving experts recommend tracking your fuel consumption to cut costs and reduce harmful emissions.
One way of monitoring your fuel consumption is to use a fuel consumption display. Now standard in many vehicles, these displays give you immedi-ate and average fuel consumption readings. Some systems let you know when you are accelerating too hard or are driving too aggressively.
Many drivers report consuming 15 per cent less fuel by acting on the feedback the systems provide.
You can also log on to the Natural Resources Canada website at www.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca and

Second NEXUS Lane opening at Canada Border Services Agency plaza
Metrolinx has purchased 27 new accessible eight-metre buses through joint procurement partnerships between 11 municipalities, the first collaboration of its kind for specialized vehicles in Ontario.
Municipalities and their non-profit specialized transit service providers who participated in the joint bus order are saving approximately $400,000 on the order that is valued at $3.5 million.
“Accessible transit can be an important lifeline for people with disabilities and seniors to access jobs, community, friends and family,” said Ajax-Pickering MPP Joe Dickson. “Helping Ontario communities purchase accessible buses and improve transit is part
of the McGuinty government’s Open Ontario plan.” The 11 participating municipalities and non-
profit organizations are Durham Region, Sarnia, North Bay, Welland, Kenora, HAGI (Thunder Bay), Cornwall, Community Care North Hastings (Ban-croft), Oakville, St. Thomas and York Region.
“By working together, we were able to generate a significant cost savings with a lower unit price on the new buses and reduced administrative costs for all parties associated with the joint procurement pro-cess,” said Metrolinx President and CEO Bruce Mc-Cuaig. “We are helping municipalities get more out of their investment and continuing to make progress
on improving public transit services.” These high-floor and low-floor buses are acces-
sible and carry up to six passengers with personal mobility devices at a time. The buses will use clean diesel and meet 2010 emissions standards.
Metrolinx is a Crown agency of the Province of Ontario. For more information, visit our website www.metrolinx.com
Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority (PBA) have announced the installation of a second NEXUS lane within the Peace Bridge CBSA plaza. This new NEXUS lane will provide additional expedited pro-cessing opportunities during busy commuter times and other peak travel events at the crossing.
“Locating another NEXUS lane at the Peace Bridge is a welcome enhancement and certainly improves our ability to facilitate frequent travel be-tween Canada and the United States,” said Authority Chairman Ken Schoetz. “As the bridge is the busiest NEXUS corridor in the region, with nearly 300,000 expedited crossings per year, this move is a tangible
demonstration of CBSA’s commitment to helping us make the border work better.”
The equipment in the additional NEXUS lane was installed in inspection lane number two beside the existing NEXUS lane, and will be made avail-able for high-volume traffic periods such as regional sporting events, commuter periods, and traffic dur-ing Lake Erie summer cottage season. The original dedicated NEXUS lane remains open during regular hours (seven days a week, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. / 10 p.m. for Buffalo Sabres home games).
The NEXUS program is a bi-national program jointly administered by the CBSA and the U.S. Cus-toms and Border Protection (U.S. CBP) for low-risk,
pre-approved travellers into Canada and the United States. The program provides members with access to expedited processing at designated ports of entry in the air and marine modes as well at land border crossings, through dedicated processing lanes. For more information on the NEXUS program, visit www.nexus.gc.ca or www.peacebridge.com/NEXUS.
The Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Author-ity, a bi-national bridge authority, has owned and op-erated the Peace Bridge since 1933. The bridge, which was opened to traffic in 1927, spans the Niagara River between Fort Erie, Ontario, and Buffalo, New York, and is a key international border crossing.

(NC)—The life-cycle of a vehicle is long, complex, and inevitably involves the release of harmful smog-forming emissions into the atmo-sphere. The life of a vehicle on the road and the environ-mental impact it can have at the end of its life is especially pronounced when the vehicle is model year 1995 or older.
On the roadVehicles of model-year
1995 or older lack the latest technology for reducing air-polluting emissions. In fact, a 1995 or older vehicle produc-es up to 19 times more smog forming emissions than 2004 or newer vehicles.
After lifeIf a car is not properly
retired at the end of its life, it can have a negative impact on the environment. Failure to remove fluids, such as gas, oil and coolants, could result in the contamination of our air, water and soil. Addition-ally, when recyclers reuse components of the vehicles that are safe to reclaim and do not contribute to the ve-hicle’s emissions, they reduce the need to manufacture new parts. Therefore, it is impor-tant for owners to ensure their vehicles are properly disposed of in the end.
Until March 31, 2011, On-tarians who own 1995 model year and older vehicles can do just that and get rewarded for it by participating in Retire Your Ride, Canada’s national vehicle recycling program. The program has its own re-cycling Code of Practice that ensures the following steps are followed:
• Draining of Fluids: On average, between 20 and 40 litres of fluid are removed from a vehicle and disposed of responsibly.
• Part Removal: The ve-hicle is dismantled, reusable parts (except those related to emissions) are inspected, test-ed and prepared for resale.
• Recycling and Recov-ery of Material – The empty body of the vehicle is crushed and shredded. Ferrous mate-rials (such as iron) and non-ferrous materials (such as alu-minum) are then separated and reused to make new ve-hicles and other products.
To date, the program has responsibly recycled more than 90,000 vehicles from Canada’s roads, reducing smog forming emissions by over 4,800 tonnes.
More information is avail-able online at retireyourride.ca.
A vehicle’s polluting past The Harper Government has announced that it is moving
forward with the requirement for an average 2 per cent renew-able content in diesel fuel and heating oil.
“When we announced our Renewable Fuels Strategy, we were clear that the 2 per cent requirement would be implemented subject to technical feasibility,” said the Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment. “After positive results, we are mov-ing forward with this requirement which will result in further reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and ultimately in cleaner air for all Canadians.’’
“We are meeting the commitments we have made to farmers, rural communities and industry to regulate the use of renewable fuels,” said the Honourable Lebel, Minister of State (Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec). “The new renewable fuel content in biodiesel and heating oil will give our farmers another market for their crops and dem-onstrates how agriculture can contribute to reducing Canada’s environmental footprint.”
Government’s Renewable Fuels Regulations were published on September 1, 2010. The regulations already require an aver-age of 5 per cent renewable content in gasoline. The regulations also contained the provisions to require an average of 2 per cent
renewable content in diesel fuel and heating oil. When fully implemented, the Strategy’s two regulatory re-
quirements combined with provincial regulations will ensure a total volume of renewable fuel that will reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by up to four megatonnes—about the equivalent of taking one million vehicles off the road.
The proposed regulatory amendment will be published in the Canada Gazette, Part I in the coming weeks for a 60-day pub-lic comment period. The Government of Canada is proposing a coming into force date of July 1, 2011.
The Harper Government worked closely with industry part-ners to support several projects to demonstrate how renewable diesel fuel would perform under the range of Canadian condi-tions. The report concluded that an average of 2 per cent renew-able content is technically feasible.
Reducing emissions in the transportation sector is a key component in the Government’s plan to achieve Canada’s target of reducing total greenhouse gas emissions by 17 per cent from 2005 levels by 2020. In addition to the Renewable Fuels Regula-tions, the Government has also finalized regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from passenger vehicles and is work-ing to do the same for heavy-duty vehicles.

Navistar Interna-tional Corporation has announced it has reached a develop-ment agreement with EcoMotors Interna-tional™ in support of the company’s opoc® (Opposed Piston-Opposed Cylinder) engine architecture.
EcoMotors In-ternational’s first product targeted for commercial applica-
tion is a turbo-diesel version of the inno-vative opposed-piston, opposed-cylinder engine.
“We continue to be on the cutting edge of technology and our development agreement with EcoMotors once again demonstrates our commitment to de-velop new, innovative approaches to the commercial vehicle industry,” said Dan Ustian, Navistar chairman, president and chief executive officer. “Our company has a long history of pushing the envelope to deliver state-of-the-art, customer-fo-cused solutions and we see great prom-ise in EcoMotors’ breakthrough engine
design.”Khosla Ventures’ Vinod Khosla, Eco-
Motors primary investor along with Bill Gates, sees the Navistar-EcoMotors alli-ance as a reflection of the disruptive na-ture of the opoc technology.
EcoMotors’ patented engine design creates a ground-breaking internal com-bustion engine family architecture that will operate on a number of different fu-els, including gasoline, diesel, natural gas and ethanol. The opoc’s new opposed pis-ton-opposed cylinder direct gas exchange operation provides the well known emis-sions benefits of 4-cycle engines, the
simplicity benefits of 2-cycle engines, the power density of the less well known opposed piston engine, and the ex-traordinary developments in electronics and combustion technology all tied together in a new and proprietary en-gine architecture.
The opoc engine com-prises two opposing cyl-inders per module, with a crankshaft between them—each cylinder has two pis-tons moving in opposite directions. This innovative design configuration elimi-nates the cylinder-head and valve-train components of conventional engines, offer-ing an efficient, compact and simple core engine structure. The result is an engine family that is lighter, more efficient and economical, with lower exhaust emissions.
EcoMotors’ opoc engine has a number of distinct advantages over traditional internal combustion en-gines. The opoc engine has very high power density of nearly one horsepower per pound resulting in an un-precedented lightweight and compact engine. The opoc engine is perfectly balanced enabling stackable power modules. This unique modu-lar displacement capability is one of the long standing, but elusive goals of engine engi-neers’ quest for high efficien-cy. In addition, it also results in much less NVH than a conventional engine of com-parable power. It’s elegantly simple design allows for low cost, efficient manufacturing and increased operating du-rability:
• 50 percent fewer parts than a conventional engine
• Straight forward assembly
• No cylinder heads or valve-train • Uses conventional com-ponents, materials and pro-cesses

Again this year, two fleets in North America will be rec-ognized for their commitment to safety through the 2011 Volvo Trucks Safety Award. The honorees will each re-ceive $25,000 to be used in their safety-related activities.
2011 marks the third consecutive year that Volvo Trucks will highlight the safe-ty efforts of two outstanding fleets. Michelin again joins Volvo in sponsoring the Volvo Trucks Safety Award, focusing on the importance of highway safety for the trucking indus-try and all motorists.
“Safety has long been a Volvo core value, and a cen-tral concern of the entire trucking industry,” said Ron Huibers, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Volvo Trucks in North Amer-ica. “The Volvo Trucks Safety Award is a way to recognize the industry’s best for their excellent work and dedication to safety.”
“Highway safety starts long before trucks take to the road,” Huibers said. “Our vehicles feature active safety technologies, like Volvo En-hanced Stability Technology and Volvo Enhanced Cruise, that make the highways safer for all of us. Volvo Trucks and Michelin view this award as an opportunity to support fleets in furthering their own commitments to safety.”
The Volvo Trucks Safety Award is open to all U.S. and Canadian fleets operating at least five Class 8 units. Fleets must have at least one Volvo tractor in operation to be eli-gible for the award. Entrants will be ranked by their ac-cident frequency rates. Par-ticipating fleets will also be judged on their accident pre-vention activities.
The deadline for entry is June 30, 2011. The winners of the award will be announced during the American Truck-ing Associations’ Manage-ment Conference & Exhibi-tion in Oct. 2011. The two grand prizes will be awarded to the fleets with the best re-cords in two divisions based on annual vehicle miles trav-eled: less than 20 million miles and more than 20 mil-lion miles. Complete rules and entry forms are at http://www.volvotruckssafetyaward.com
The winners of the 2010 Volvo Trucks Safety Award were MacKinnon Transport of Guelph, Ontario, and Up-per Lakes Foods, Cloquet, Minnesota.

Grote Industries has announced the introduction of the industry’s fi rst advanced, compact, portable Roadside Lighting Repair Kit.
Th e company said the kit was a logi-cal response to the problem of unpre-dictable lighting and wiring failures that occur in the fi eld. Th e kit contains 23 of the most practical, commonly used, mis-sion-critical lighting components found in today’s commercial vehicles. Th e kit has everything a driver needs to make a fi rst-class fi eld repair and make it back to the hub or to the nearest service center––without a roadside service call, without an error and without an incident.
Th e authorities track approximately 220 CSA violations related to vehicle maintenance. Violations that wreak the most havoc within the CSA scoring sys-tem include: driving out of service (level of severity 10), tire defects (level of se-verity 8), suspension defects (level of se-
verity 7), defective lights (level of sever-ity 6), steering defects (level of severity 6) and brake defects (level of severity 4). Violations leading to an out-of-service order result in a doubling of the point penalty. Vehicle maintenance violations (such as those for lighting defects) will aff ect a driver’s score for 36 months and a fl eet’s score for 24 months.
Th e kit comes complete with 23 of the industry’s most commonly used lighting-related parts: 12 lamps, four styles of pigtails, three unique grommets, two unique brackets, conspicuity tape and a selection of 14-gauge butt connec-tors. Th e kit also includes a selection of zip tie fasteners to help stabilize any fi eld repair.

Abrams Towing Services was pleased to sponsor the February 2011 monthly meeting organized by the Toronto Chapter of Automotive Transportation Service Superintendents Associ-ation (ATSSA). The well attended meeting was held on 10th February at the Paradise Banquet & Convention Center in Concord.
Abrams Towing Ser-vices Ltd. (Abrams Ser-vices) was incorporated in 1984 and has grown to become Ontario and Canada’s largest towing and recovery company and provider of motorist and transport services.
The dispatch centres of Abrams are open to serve 24 hours a day and are located conveniently throughout the Greater Toronto Area, South Western Ontario and Southern Ontario. In addition, Abrams maintains affiliations with sev-eral other professional towing companies, making it easy for its customers to obtain service no matter where or when the need arises.
Joey Gagne, Abram’s founder and President, has been the driving force behind Abram’s phenomenal growth for the past two decades. Mr. Gagne has built the company to include a fleet of more than 125 modern towing and recovery vehi-cles, including scores of light duty tow trucks and flat beds,
plus, tri-axle, 50-ton heavy truck wreckers and hy-draulic float trail-ers.
Joey Gagne who is also the President of the Provincial Tow-ing Association (Ontario) in his address advised the audience to maximize the net-working opportu-nities offered by professional asso-ciations like ATS-SA. Narrating his own success story, Joey thanked the membership of ATSSA for help-
ing Abrams grow exponentially over the last few years. ATSSA is a group of fleet maintenance professionals ac-
tively running light, medium, and heavy fleets in the prov-ince of Ontario and operating across Canada and the USA. ATSSA provides information and expert advice by manufac-turers, to people responsible for the maintenance of trucking fleets. The purpose of the ATSSA is to continuously explore, promote and implement ways and means to enhance mainte-nance practices involving commercial vehicles and garages, while encouraging ethical conduct and fostering a spirit of fellowship.

TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index re-corded the highest load volumes ever posted in the month of January; volumes exceeded the previous record set during the upsurge in 2008 by 4 percent.
January postings were up 30 percent over January 2010, while month over month declined by just over a percentage point from the previ-ous month’s record load volumes in December 2010.
With loads reaching a peak in January, equipment postings reflected the exact opposite results. Equipment postings descended to the lowest levels for the month in over five years.
TransCore’s Loadlink freight matching da-tabase constitutes the largest Canadian network of carriers, owner operators, freight brokers and intermediaries and has been available to Cana-dian subscribers since its inception in 1990.
Over 13 million full loads, LTL (less than truck load) shipments and trucks are posted to the Loadlink network annually. As a result of this high volume, TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index is representative of the ups and downs in spot market freight movement and provides a historical account of the domestic and cross border spot market freight movement.
The Loadlink network provides Canadian based companies with:
• The largest online database of available loads and trucks
• Unlimited access to the network and integrated services
• Guaranteed payment

(NC) —If you want to get the most mileage out of a tank of gas, consider investing in low rolling re-sistance tires.
Rolling resistance, is a measure of the force that it takes to move your tires forward on the road. As you travel along, the weight of your vehicle “deforms” your tire tread where the rubber meets the road. The resulting deformity generates heat between the tire and the road, which is then wasted in the form of heat as the tire rotates. The only way for your engine to make up for the lost energy is through consuming fuel. The heavier your vehicle, the more energy it burns to compensate. Who knew?
If new tires are on the horizon, consider low roll-ing resistance tires; some tire manufacturers are now boasting a 20 per cent reduction in rolling resistance through high-efficiency tires that reduce fuel con-sumption by about 4%.
The Rubber Association of Canada and Natural Resources Canada have teamed up to make this in-formation available to Canadians through their web-
sites (www.betiresmart.ca and www.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca). The websites contain a lot of helpful tips and tricks to help consumers save money on fuel and re-duce harmful emissions, including how to buy and maintain more eco-friendly tires.
Low rolling resistance tires can improve your gas mileage

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) has marked the production of its 1,000th hybrid electric vehicle with a celebration at its Mt. Holly, NC plant.
Th e Freightliner Business Class M2 106 Hybrid features the same benefi ts of the Freightliner Business Class M2, such as outstanding vis-ibility and maneuverability, with the added effi ciency and environment-friendly features of hybrid power. Th e Business Class M2 106 Hybrid also can be easily confi gured for a wide variety of bodies for diff er-ent applications, such as beverage, dump, government, landscape, tow-ing, utility vehicles, and emergency.
In addition to the Business Class M2 106 Hybrid, Freightliner Cus-tom Chassis Corporation (FCCC), a subsidiary of DTNA, leads the way
for alternative power in its markets. For the walk-in van industry, FCCC manufactures hybrid-electric vehi-cle (HEV) chassis, hydraulic hybrid vehicle (HHV) chassis and an all-electric chassis. FCCC also manu-factures HEV chassis for the com-mercial bus market segments. In 2009, Th omas Built Buses, another DTNA subsidiary, launched is fi rst HEV, the Saf-T-Liner C2e solution, also supported by FCCC’s hybrid-electric chassis.
All of DTNA’s hybrid products are equipped with EPA 2010-com-pliant engines utilizing selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technol-ogy and the Eaton Hybrid Electric Drivetrain System, a parallel hybrid system that enables the truck to op-erate using the diesel engine alone, or in combination with the hybrid
electric motor. Th e hybrid-electric motor provides power to launch and accelerate the truck, improving fuel economy and reducing emis-sions in stop-and-go operations, and the electric power comes from regenerative braking while the vehi-cle is slowing down. Further, DTNA hybrid’s can be equipped with elec-tronic PTO and/or 110V power generation capabilities to power hydraulics, lights, tools, or other equipment for job site or refriger-ated cargo applications.
Last spring, DTNA further demonstrated its leadership in hybrid technologies with the an-nouncement of the opening of its Local Hybrid Application Center in Portland, Ore.

Greater structural stability and en-hanced product performance are the
hallmarks of Continental Tire the Americas, LLC’s latest waste haul truck tire, the HSU2+, the company announced last month.
The HSU2+ is the next generation of Con-tinental’s heavy truck tire designed for waste hauling and other severe service applica-tions. While the tire incorporates the previous HSU2’s wide tread and shoulder ribs for im-proved wear, a robust cut- and chip-resistant tread compound and unique tread groove de-signs to reduce stone retention, a new feature is Continental’s premier “Stable” bead construc-tion, said Roger Stansbie, director of truck tire engineering for the Americas.
“The ‘Stable’ bead construction is a new, technologically advanced bead design that incorporates the best that Continental’s engi-neers have to offer for severe service, construc-tion and other off-road applications,” Stansbie explained. “With the improvements we have made to the bead design, waste haulers and other tough customers will see even longer cas-ing lifetimes and better structural durability with the HSU2+.”
The Continental exclusive “Stable” bead features an 18 percent increase in chafer cord density, an increase in the amount of tear-re-sistant wrap at the chafer and ply edges of the steel cord, an optimized chafer angle for im-proved stiffness across the body ply of the tire and an extruded sidewall, turn-up cover and rim strip.
“For heavy, front axle load applications, the ‘Stable’ bead ensures maximum performance and greater retreadability,” Stansbie said.
Continental’s HSU2+ sports an extra-deep 26/32nds of tread depth, as well as 276 milli-meters of tread width for greater stability. It is available now in size 315/80R22.5, load range L from authorized Continental truck tire deal-ers.
