Makers: Women Who Make America
FEBRUARY 2013 VOLUME 15 | ISSUE 2
From the Chief Executive officer
Bert Schmidt President & Chief Executive Officer
Last February, when PBS announced that the MAKERS program was in production, I knew it would be a huge challenge to distill fifty years of women’s contributions to America into a single television
program. But I also knew that if it could be done well, it could only be done by PBS. I’m confident you’ll agree once you’ve seen the program.
of course, I also knew that if you wanted to look at significant contributions that women have made over the last half-century, you’d need to look no further than the histories and the hallways of WHRo. From the 1950s – the earliest days of the station – when Grace Waters (now Bisese) was the Director of Instruction and Virginia Henderson was School Television Service Manager, women have played an integral part in WHRO’s evolution from a small experiment in teaching-by-television into the multi-platform, multi-faceted public media education-focused organization it is today.
Women have been educational content developers, producers, directors, videographers, editors, radio announcers and television hosts. They’ve been engineers, master control operators and information technology managers. They’ve been development professionals and communications experts. They’ve been television and radio station managers, content and development officers and educational developers.
They’ve served on our board of directors, as heads of executive committees and as Board Chairs (going back to 1969!)
It was a woman – the late Vianne Webb – who led the charge to acquire the second radio frequency that enabled a full-time classical music station. She began and nurtured WHRO’s partnerships with arts and cultural groups throughout Hampton Roads.
Vianne died in 1992, but her influence is still felt and her work continues to inspire.
Women played leadership roles in our federally mandated transition from the standard definition television format to HDTV – understanding and helping our viewers understand the complex specifics of high definition, and explaining the sometimes confusing logistics.
Today, women continue in these and other roles. Some of them are high profile: Cathy Lewis and Barbara Hamm Lee, for example, are the public faces and voices of WHRo through their radio programs and outreach in the community. others work quietly behind the scenes – leading departments, overseeing personnel and creating educational materials and content. Some work directly with children, some lead community advisory groups, some teach workshops and classes. All are dedicated to our educational mission and eager to ensure all of our products remain top quality.
Like the women you will see in the February 26th PBS documentary, these women – the MAKERS of WHRo – have approached every challenge and task as opportunity rather than obstacle. I’m delighted for this chance to salute them, past and present.

WHRo is so excited to present MAKERS: Women Who Make America, an unprecedented digital video and broadcast initiative of PBS and AoL. This multi-platform initiative is one of the most dynamic collections of women’s stories ever assembled.
MAKERS originated from a very clear premise: over the last half century, the work of millions of women has altered virtually every aspect of American culture. MAKERS tells the story of these exceptional women - both famous and unknown individuals - whose pioneering contributions continue to shape the world in which we live.
MAKERS profiles Supreme Court Justices, Secretaries of State and CEos. They are athletes, activists and entertainers. They are groundbreakers who have sparked change, been firsts-in-their-fields, and paved the way for those who followed. The richness of the MAKERS initiative extends beyond profiling these incredible groundbreakers to tell the stories of hundreds of women who are driving and realizing social change today. MAKERS draws on the archival and narrative possibilities of a digital video experience to create a new way to explore these women’s stories and highlight a new generation of women whose impact is just beginning to be felt and understood.
Paula Kerger, President and CEo of PBS, says “By spotlighting some of the most inspirational women in our nation’s history, MAKERS will tell the comprehensive story of how women have advanced in America during the last half century. I hope that the MAKERS project will become the seminal record of women’s achievement, and inspire a new generation of leaders.”
An important part of the initiative, MAKERS.com is a robust website that features stories, blogs and videos from and about women like Linda Alvarado, Brenda Berkman, Judy Blume, Carol Burnett, ursula Burns, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Katie Couric, Ellen DeGeneres, Geraldine Ferraro, Theresa Kane, Billie Jean King, Maya Lin, Susan Love, Marissa Mayer, Robin Morgan, Sandra Day O’Connor, Maria Pepe, Michelle Rhee,
Condoleezza Rice, Faith Ringgold, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Zainab Salbi, Sheryl Sandberg, Phyllis Schlafly, Barbara Smith, Gloria Steinem, Martha Stewart, Kathrine Switzer, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Barbara Walters.
You can also hear about how the women of Hampton Roads have contributed to the growth of this vibrant community by
tuning in WHRV 89.5FM at 12 noon for HearSay

Love to play Scrabble? Looking for a little friendly competition?
Pledge Express is returning to WHRV and WHRo-FM February 16-22!Last fall, we had great success with our short-ened radio fundraiser – which we call Pledge Express – so we’re hoping for a repeat. Listeners and members told us they appre-ciated the abbreviated drive, and we were able to meet our goal in less time than we expected. Pledge Express is a fresh approach; it’s crisp, it’s fun and it works!
So we’ll be on the air for just one week in February to ask for your support for public radio. You can join us by calling 757-889-9476, or by going online to WHRo.org. And as always, thank you!
on March 1st, WHRo is once again partnering with our friends at The Literacy Partnership to host SCRABBLE® for LITERACY! The evening competition for adult players will be held in our Hampton Boulevard studios, where parking is ample and free! There’ll be food and drink (soft and otherwise), prizes, camaraderie and fun for everybody.
The tiles fly fast and furious and the action is non-stop. Be warned: the competition is fierce but friendly – these players are here to have fun and make friends, along with 7-letter words! Don’t have a ready-made team? Solos are welcome – we’ll match you up with other word lovers and make
sure you get to play to your heart’s content. Fees are $125 for a team, or $50 for solo players. Register by calling (757.664.9177) or by visiting our website at
www.whro.org.
The Literacy Partnership is a nonprofit organization dear to WHRO’s heart – its mission is to expand literacy outreach and build literacy awareness in Hampton Roads, a goal we proudly support! There are two practice sessions you can join at the Barnes & Noble @ TCC in Norfolk’s MacArthur Center – February 5th and February 17th, starting at 2pm!

Black History Month is a time to celebrate the achievements of black Americans and to recognize their central role in u.S. history. This year we also celebrate the 150th Anniver-sary of the Emancipation Proclamation.
For over a year, WHRo has been engaged in an effort to improve graduation rates in Hampton Roads. As part of American Graduate: Let’s Make it Happen, a public media initiative made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, WHRo is building on our long-standing commitment to education by convening conversations and strengthening partnerships among local schools, businesses and community organizations to help students stay on the path to a high school diploma.
African Americans are especially hard hit by the dropout crisis. According to a study by the Alliance for Excellent Education, Virginia high school graduation rates for the Class of 2007 were 76% for whites and 56% for blacks. Across the nation, black, Hispanic and/or low-income students are graduating at significantly lower rates than other students.
The causes are multi-faceted, but for children living in poverty, the confluence of challenges can be insurmountable. According to the 2010 Schott 50 State Report on Public Education and Black Males, the City of norfolk is in a state of emergency with graduation rates for black males below 50%.
These vulnerable students – and the schools whose job it is to educate them – need our help. Everyone has a role to play: business leaders can introduce students to career opportunities. College students and faculty can provide tutoring. Mentors can positively impact the lives of young people through long-term trusting relationships. Faith communities can open their doors to host programs for young people. Community based programs and other agencies can strengthen relationships with schools and impover-ished communities. Individuals can volunteer with schools and youth programs. Additional funding can support field trips, extra-curricular activities and summer enrichment camps.
As your public media station, WHRo is committed to promoting public understanding of important local issues and helping to affect positive outcomes through the use of our airwaves, internet outlets, educational resources and community engagement efforts.
Support for WHRO’s American Graduate: Let’s Make it Happen initiative is provided by norfolk State university, Virginia Ship Repair Association, newport news Shipbuilding and Thomas nelson Community College.

NOVA “BuILDING PHARAOH’S CHARIOT” Wednesday, February 6 • 9pm
Some historians claim that the Egyptian chariot launched a technological and strategic revolu-tion and was the secret weapon behind Egypt’s greatest era of conquest known as the New Kingdom. But was the chariot really a revolutionary design? How decisive was its role in the bloody battles of the ancient world? A team of archaeologists, engineers, woodworkers and horse trainers builds and tests two accurate replicas of Egyptian royal chariots. Driving them to their limits in the desert outside Cairo, NOVA’s experts test the claim that the chariot marks a crucial turning point in ancient military history.

FRonTLInE: CLIFFHAnGER Tuesday, February 12 • 8pm
This February, as the nation faces yet another round of fiscal crises, FRONTLINE investi-gates the inside story of Washington’s failure to solve the country’s debt and deficit problems. Drawing on interviews with key players in Congress and the White House, FRonTLInE goes behind the scenes to show how a clash of politics and personalities has taken the nation’s economy to the edge of the “fiscal cliff,” and now to a second round of standoffs over the debt ceiling and sequestration. The film explores the deep ideological divide inside the Republican Party and the struggle between House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and House Speaker John Boehner as they take on President obama and the Democrats.
SILICon VALLEY: AMERICAn ExPERIEnCE Tuesday, February 5 • 9pm
SILICon VALLEY tells the story of the pioneering scientists who transformed rural Santa Clara County into the hub of technological ingenuity we now know as Silicon Valley. The film spotlights the creativity of the young men who founded Fairchild Semiconductor, in particular the brilliant, charismatic young physicist Robert noyce. Their radical innovations would include the integrated circuit that helped make the united States a leader in both space exploration and the personal computer revolution, transforming the way the world works, plays and communicates, making possible everything from the Apollo program to smart phones, from pacemakers to microwaves.
FRonTLInE: RAISInG ADAM LAnZA Tuesday, February 19 • 10pm
In the wake of the mass killings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, FRonTLInE inves-tigates a young man and the town he changed forever. Adam Lanza’s motives, and his life, remain largely a mystery. With The Hartford Courant, FRonTLInE looks for answers to the central — and so far elusive — question: Who was Adam Lanza? Also this hour: In the aftermath of the tragedy, President obama called for a national conversation about guns. Nowhere is that conversation more intense than in Newtown, where FRONTLINE finds a town divided and explores how those closest to the tragedy are wrestling with our nation’s gun culture and laws.
noVA: MInD oF A RAMPAGE KILLER Wednesday, February 20 • 9pm
What makes a person walk into a theater or church or classroom and open fire? What combination of circumstances compels a human being to commit the most inhuman of crimes? As the nation tries to comprehend the tragic events in newtown, noVA correspon-dent Miles O’Brien investigates theories that rampage killers are driven most of all by the wish to die, not the urge to kill. Could suicide — and the desire to go out in a media-fueled blaze of glory — be their main motivation? How much can science tell us about a brain at risk for violence? Most important, can we recognize dangerous minds in time to stop the next newtown?
AMERICAn MASTERS “SISTER RoSETTA THARPE: THE GoDMoTHER oF RoCK AnD RoLL”
Friday, February 22 • 9pm
Discover the life, music and influence of African-American gospel singer and guitar virtuoso Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915-1973). Southern-born, Chicago-raised and new York-made, “She could play the guitar like nobody else … nobody.” During the 1940s-60s, Sister Rosetta introduced the spiritual passion of her gospel music into the secular world of rock ’n’ roll, inspiring the male icons of the genre. The flamboyant superstar, with her spectacular playing on the newly electrified guitar, had a major influence on black musicians.
MAKERS: WoMEn WHo MAKE AMERICA Tuesday, February 26 • 8pm
Review the story of how women, including Hillary Clinton, Gloria Steinem (photo), Ellen DeGeneres, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, oprah Winfrey, Barbara Walters and Katie Couric, have helped shape America over the last 50 years — through one of the most sweeping social revolutions in our country’s history — in pursuit of their rights to a full and fair share of political power, economic opportunity and personal autonomy. The documentary builds on an unprecedented multi-platform video experience from PBS and AoL: MAKERS.com.

BATTLE FoR THE ELEPHAnTS Wednesday, February 27 • 9pm
The elephant, Earth’s most charismatic and majestic land animal, today faces market forces driving the value of its tusks to levels once reserved for gold. This groundbreaking national Geographic special goes undercover to expose the criminal network behind ivory’s supply and demand. It also demonstrates how the elephant, with its highly evolved society, keen intelligence, ability to communicate across vast distances and to love, remember and even to mourn, is far more complex than ever imagined. More revelations are sure to follow, but only if the outspoken and courageous crime investigators and conservationists showcased in this program prevail.

The artist of the month is Polish-American pianist Anna Kijanowska. A member of the piano faculty at the College of William and Mary, Anna will travel to Australia, Vietnam, and new York to perform in venues like Carnegie Hall and the Polish Consulate General in Sydney, and she will host master classes in various places in Indonesia and Singapore. With so many activities filling up her schedule, how does Kijanowska maintain her wellbeing? The key, according to her, is balance. Since her time as a student in new York, she has regularly gone hiking in various places mainly in nepal, which provides her with the health and happiness she seeks to balance her busy life.
In this episode of Stories in the Sky, Kijanowska talks with Victor Russo about her experiences as a student in Poland and America, her projects as a professional musician, and her love for hiking.

2013 Spelling Bee
WHRo will host the 2013 Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee on Saturday, February 9th, as more than 40 of the area’s finest middle school spellers compete – and you can watch The Bee – LIVE! – at 2pm on WHRo TV15.
This is our sixth year partnering with The Virginian-Pilot to hold a regional spelling bee, which is truly a collaborative effort. It takes a crew of more than 70 – including staff from almost every department at WHRo, Virginian-Pilot employees and WHRo volunteers – to organize and televise the event. WHRO-FM’s Dr. Raymond Jones, himself a former Bee winner, will once again serve as the official pronouncer.
First, second and third place winners will receive trophies from The Virginian-Pilot, and the Pilot will pay the first place winner’s travel expenses for a trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee in June. WHRO will present the first place winner with an Apple iPad®.
If you miss the live broadcast of the Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee on February 9th, you can watch streams of this and previous years’ Bees online at http://whro.org.

Community Impact AwardsDo you know someone who is making a signifi-cant difference in your community? A person, organization or business that is having a positive impact on the lives of those around them?
Dominion Virginia Power and WHRo are partnering once again to recognize our community’s unsung heroes with the 5th Annual Community Impact Awards. We want to honor people or organizations that work at the grassroots level; people who are, generally, under-appreciated for the selfless work they willingly do to help others.
WHRo is now accepting nominations for the 2013 Community Impact Awards. We’re asking you to help us honor our unsung heroes by nominating a person or organization that is making a real difference in our community. There are five categories we want to recognize – Environment, Education, Health and
Public Safety, Region-alism and Social Justice. one honoree will be chosen in each category to receive a $1,000 award for the charity of his or her choice. Winners will be recog-
nized May 16, 2013 at a luncheon at the norfolk Waterside Marriott.
To receive a copy of the official nomina-tion form, please visit www.whro.org/communityimpactawards, or contact Laura Payne, Special Events Manager, at (757) 889-9419 or Laura.Payne@whro.org. Deadline for nomination submission is 5pm on February 1, 2013.

WHRo invites you to the 10th Annual Pioneer Awards honoring Jack Ezzell and Jo Ann and Buzzy Hofheimer, pioneers in public broad-casting. Jack is the Founder and CEo of Zel Technologies, Jo Ann is a community volun-teer and Buzzy is Manager of BridgeTrust Title Group. These individuals embody the true spirit of the Pioneer Awards – they lead by excellent example and have been long-time supporters throughout the Hampton Roads community, notably in public broadcasting, including WHRo.
The Pioneer Awards will take place on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center and will include cocktails and a silent auction, a seated dinner, an awards presentation, musical entertainment and dancing.
Sponsorships, tables, individual tickets, silent auction donations, and congratulatory ads are available; please contact Laura Payne, Special Events Manager, at 757-889-9419 or via email at Laura.Payne@whro.org for more details.

THE ESTEEMED MR. HÄNDEL • SATuRDAy 2/23 • WHRo FM
He was born in Germany, wrote operas in Italy, moved to England and there wrote operas and oratorios that were all the rage. He was a shrewd businessman, a fine keyboard player and a man of the theater, acknowledged by Beethoven as “... the greatest composer who ever lived.” Georg Friedrich Händel was born on February 23, 1685, and his music still resounds today: “Messiah”, “Water Music”, the operas and oratorios, the concertos and much more. on his birthday, Saturday the 23rd of this month, we will celebrate Handel by playing some of his finest music. Tune in and enjoy.
FRESH AIR • WEEKDAyS AT 3PM • WHRV FM
Terry Gross began her radio career in 1973 at public radio station WBFo in Buffalo. There she hosted and produced several arts, women’s and public affairs programs. Two years later, she joined WHYY-FM in Philadelphia as producer and host of Fresh Air, a local, daily interview and music program. In 1985, WHYY launched a weekly half-hour edition of Fresh Air, which was distributed nation-ally by nPR. Since 1987, a daily, one-hour national edition of Fresh Air has been produced by WHyy-FM. The show became the first non-drive time show in public radio history to reach more than five million listeners each week in fall 2008, a presidential election season.
DIANE REHM SHOW • WEEKDAyS AT 1OAM • WHRV FM
Regular listeners know Diane Rehm as one of the most articulate and eloquent interviewers on radio. Her career nearly ended in 1998 because she developed spasmodic dysphonia, a neurological voice disorder that causes strained, difficult speech. Rather than quit, she sought treatment, returned to the show, and remains a powerful voice. Diane’s keen curiosity is reflected in the topics her program cov-ers: from Iraq to the economy to art to literature. Her program has been called one of the most interesting talk shows in the country by newsweek magazine. national Journal says she’s “the class act of the talk radio world.” Hear her on WHRV 89.5 weekdays at 10am.
THE VIRGINIA SyMPHONy IN CONCERT • 2/6 AT 9PM WHRo FM
The Virginia Symphony and JoAnn Falletta take us on a music tour of Italy as the orchestra returns to WHRO-FM for its first concert of this new year. A bouncy Rossini opera overture opens the program, and we’ll visit Venice by way of seldom-heard music of Pizzetti. The non-Italian piece is the lush and romantic Violin Concerto by Erich Korngold, a composer known best for his film scores. The soloist is the young British violinist Chloe Hanslip. The concert concludes with a musical postcard from the Eternal City - Respighi’s “Pines of Rome.” Tune in for this colorful concert Wednesday, February 6th at 9pm.JoAnn Falletta

NOTE OPERA TIME CHANGE! • 2/23 AT 12:30PM • WHRo FM
The Metropolitan Opera’s February 26 performance of Georges Bizet’s Carmen is noteworthy for a number of reasons besides its earlier start time of 12:30. Even people who don’t know opera, know this masterpiece. The Met’s 2013 production stars Anita Rachvelishvili, who made a sensational Met debut in the title role in 2010. “With her smoldering, earthy sexuality, she is ideal for the role” of the sultry gypsy (new York Times). Rising tenor Yonghoon Lee is Don José, whose doomed love for Carmen destroys them both. Kate Royal is the loyal Micaëla and Teddy Tahu Rhodes sings the swaggering bullfighter Escamillo. Michele Mariotti conducts in his Met debut. Tune in at 12:30 and don’t miss a minute.

A quick guide to the pleasure and promise of charitable bequests

As a “pink lady” Ruth Goodman accumulated more hours than any other volunteer at the Norfolk hospital where she greeted visitors. Before she died in 1995, Ruth arranged for a bequest to the Hampton Roads Community Foundation to give good health to the community she and her husband Victor loved. This year 21 students are studying to become physicians, pharmacists and other medical professionals thanks to scholarships generated by Ruth’s generosity. Many more Goodman Scholars will follow every year forever. Write your prescription for a better future by ordering a free bequest guide. Learn how easy it is to leave a gift for charity. Call 757-622-7951 or visit leaveabequest.org.
